Junkyard Pickings
Chewievette replied to Chewievette's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I've decided to just buy new ones and use these for the core. With all the things that could go wrong when I rebuild them I'll let someone else do it. Luckily this wasn't a waste of money since it would cost me between $60-$80 per caliper for the core charge if I didn't have these. -
Will '75 strut assemblies work in my '72
Chewievette replied to Chewievette's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Thought I'd update on this.. We ended up going to a junkyard about 1/2hr north of my friend's house where they have four S30s and three S130s! Plenty of parts! I've already spent $250 of my Next paycheck (not acctually but it will be). The earliest car they had was a '73, mine is a '72 so close enough. Since they are both 240z's then the struts should be identical to what was on mine originally correct? Well, anyway you slice it I decided to get them. Unfortunately, the driver's side has one of the two bottom bolts good and stuck and they were closing so I had to leave it but I'll be back tomorrow with a bigger wrench! I did end up getting the pass side strut off and bringing that home with me, since there was still quite a bit of daylight left I put the strut onto my car and after a little bit of cursing and beating I got it snuggled in right at home, with a wheel and tire on it and everything! So now my car is a three wheeler!! I forgot to bring my camera with me otherwise I would have pics, but I'll get some tomorrow. -
Its a Diesel...

That's getting done this afternoon. and they do have the S12W stamping, at least one of them does. -
Yeah, go buy out the store... If this works I'm definately interested in getting my hands on one ...especially if you can get more.

I stopped at the local u-pull-it yesterday and found a couple of goodies, including these. I am going to pull them apart on tuesday and throw a rebuild kit through them, I hope the kit doesn't cost all my arms and legs. Do you guys know which rebuild kit I should get and who has the best price on it? Thanks. btw, I paid $10 for the pair! and Yes they do look worse than they are.

Will '75 strut assemblies work in my '72
Chewievette replied to Chewievette's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Alright, thanks guys! I am going to go pick them up next week and throw them on there. After I get it sitting on all fours on solid ground I'll figure out how much I have to section. -
Will '75 strut assemblies work in my '72
Chewievette replied to Chewievette's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Sweet, that's some good news! So will the taller isolators work at least temporarily? Are the 260 isolators tall like the 280 or short like the 240? I need everything from the lower ball joint to the upper strut mount, including brakes but I can source those new. -
I need to get some front strut assemblies for my 1972 240z. I need some struts to get my car moving so I've got a question. The only struts I have been able to locate in the area are on a '75, will these work in my car? if not how are they different? If I cant drive on them can I at least bolt them in so I can roll the car around until I can get a set of acctual 240z struts? I read somewhere that the newer struts are only longer than the 240 struts, since I plan on lowering the car can I section these struts and use them? and in the likely occasion that these wont fit what am I looking for? Which cars can I make work?

I acctually like doing wiring, its relaxing in an odd sort of way. I am studying to become an aircraft mechanic and that was one of my favorite classes so far. As long as I can formulate some kind of wiring schematic I'll have no problem wiring it up. Like everything else it just takes time (and liberal amounts of cash). I have been thinking about it and like I said, as long as I can cobble together a schematic, I think doing the wiring myself is the way to go. btw, I have been looking to run my engine on something other than the stock computer and since I'm starting from scratch now would be the time to modify, yes? Should I try to build a megasquirt into the system now? or would it be a good idea to run stock for a while?

I have a 1972 240z that is totally striped of its wiring, there is NONE. I have a 1979 280zx that runs but is getting parted, that's a story on its own, so I want to swap the zx engine and trans into the 240 but I need to get it running and the first thought that came to mind was to swap over the entire harness but I have been told that's a bad idea so I need some help. Do I pay the big bucks for a Painless U(make it fit)niversal harness, do I swap over the entire 280zx harness, or should I buy bunches of wire and make my own? What I really want to do is put in a DIS system using LS1 coils (there's a picture of one setup like this in the gallery) but I dont know where I should start with this project. If I can get it running on the stock type ignition control that is fine until I can work out the DIS, I'm not in a rush to get it just the way I want it but I do want to be driving it soon.

Good point...

Notice what he listed as fuel type? I'm going to email him to find out where he got whatever it is that he's smoking! Cuz I needs some!

My current situation dictates that I stay where I'm at. My only other option is to quit my job and move back home. but that would leave me with a place to work but no money to do the work with. I suppose that wouldn't be all bad as long as I can find a job back home. hmm...

I guess I'll start reading the classifieds in the newspaper again. I dont know if I trust my cars to stay in a stranger's garage, but you do what you have to right?

I live in an apartment complex and both of my Z's are in storage until I find a solution to this problem. I need to get both into a covered working area so that I can get my 240z running and finish parting the 280zx. So I need to find someplace that I can rent to work on my car but there aren't any storage places near by that allow you to work on your car and I cant find anyone willing to rent their garage to some punk kid they dont know. So what can I do? Drag my cars into the apartment parking lot and work on them there even though they dont want me to? Any ideas?

Well, at least now we know what happens when a bunch of engineers get really really Bored!

I frequent http://www.solsticeforum.com mainly because I have been diggin on the solstice ever since it was a show car back in 2002! If you search that site you will find that there are a few companies doing the V8 install, a hand full doing V8 swap Kits, and there are also a few doing V6 Kits! Another cool thing I noticed about the Solstice is that since all of the body panels are removable it could be the next Fiero for kit car manufacturers! btw, Mallet is working on the V8 Sky already

Would anyone be willing to pull a pair of 240z front struts for me? I need them to be able to drive my car, but I cant find them up here anywhere!

Ok guys got the ZG flares painted and taped on
Chewievette replied to wigenOut-S30's topic in Body Kits & Paint
I'm going to go against the grain here and say that it's perfect the way you have it mocked up! For once I Love those color wheels! On a side note, I love the rear spoiler treatment! That's exactly what I've been thinking about doing. What spoiler did you start with? -
You know I have a hot wheels car with that same paint job! Nice car.
-
Very nice car man! Your front end reminds me of the S2000, in a good way. Its kindof like a mini Gnose. Very cool, cant wait to see paint on it.
-
Either way you go you are creating drag so it depends on what you want the air to do. I was saying to use vortex generators to keep the air stuck therefore increasing the downforce that a rear spoiler can provide. Unless you are planning 100mph+ on a regular basis I wouldn't worry about it. If you are, I would suggest consulting an aerodynamicist who specializes in race cars.
