79ZX to 83ZXT swap help!!!!!

Hi Def

Recommended Posts

Yes,I've searched and have found WAY TOO MUCH info!!! Lol And with all the discoveries, and sidetracked info and links,I have still NOT found what I'm looking for. After WEEKS of reading,I'm giving up..

The prob I'm having is,figuring out how to wire the fusible links into the 79 main harness by the battery.. I have some of it wired cause its pretty ez to color match and gauge a few of them.

Where I am now stuck is,I have a white,(larger gauge) wire and a white with red strip,(smaller gauge)wire coming from the 79 main harness by the battery, and a white wire coming from the fusible link and a black wire from the fusible link also.. So what do I hook the 79 main harness wires too and same with the link wires?

I tried uploading pics but it says there to big. Pics are on my phone and I don't have a pc right now. :/ I do have like 7 pics I just took tonight. :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Pics of someone's fusible link swapped/wired in would be great!! Following the wiring in the FSM and haynes is soooo confusing to me. This is my first TURBO swap and its def not as ez as an N/A swap.. :/ I was enjoying it till now. Been tryin to get this done and searching for weeks!! .

Once again, thanks to anyone and everyone for responding and/or helping/suggesting!!! I def need and want your help..

The engine harness plug for the fuselink should snap into place in the underside of the fuselink box, then you need to look at the lid and see which way the fuse links plug in(Brown vs Green). It should be straight forward, unless you dont have the connector.

I think pics would help, upload the pics to photobucket or something and then post the links with the image tag. For the turbo harness I believe there are only two fusible links that you need to hook up. I still had the fusible link box connected into the harness so I only had to connect the terminal to the positive side of the battery and the rest was connected into the harness. At least that's how I remember it.

Totally forgot to mention,I did not receive the top to the turbo fusible links.. Sorry bout that. Althou, the links are wired correctly per the FSM.. Haynes doesn't show it as well. But from the bottom side of the links is where the trouble wires are.

Photobucket. On it! Got some nice pics of the prob wires. Different angles and should be totally clear and easy to see. I was hoping for help on the pic uploaded also,so thank you very much already.. Posting now. As soon as I figure out Photobucket.

Thank you for responding and sharing your knowledge and time to help me out. My Bday is next month on the 6st and I'm def wanting to drive my toy!!! Exspecially now. It's turbo'd with a rebuilt engine. :)

And nevermind. I just looked and followed the link and the pics still look great. Hope it helps you guys/girls so you can in turn help me. Lol Thanks again.

These should be the three plugs that connect up:

This one is the relay.

This is for the fuse links:

This one is the main harness connector:

This is the entire passenger side end:

The relay and the harness connector go into the hole next to the battery in the fender recess. These pics are of the harness out of my 83 turbo. I hope they can clear up some confusion.

Actually it looks like you have the two wires that you need, I believe those two brown and green wires that look like they're already wired up are the only ones you need. When I did my Maxifuse conversion I cut out all the left over links from the ZXT harness except the brown and green ones and wired them into their own separate maxifuse blocks. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures at the moment...

Have you seen this pic?

This was the most helpful of all the information for when I swapped my 83ZXT motor and harness into my 76.

+1 on that...

www.xenons130.com for the schematics. The EFI harness should be plug and play. Why is your fuseable link all hacked up?

I have no idea that the harness was even hacked. :( That's the way I received it for the guy I bought it from. Is there anyway to salvage the harness I have? Or should I start looking for another harness? FricFrac,I see you sell fixed/modded harnesses? Any chance you have an 83 harness,IN GOOD SHAPE,you wanna sell me? Lol

My Bday is fast approaching and I want my ZXT on it. Lol Got lil under 2 weeks to go. Got the engine built last night, just need injectors,(which are on hold) my Derale oil cooler and now,A NEW 83 HARNESS. Wanna get the harness ordered by this Friday,so any help would be great. I stopped on the wiring once I heard, why is your harness all hacked up? Lol No sense working with crap! Lol

And,how bout a lil trade deal FricFrac.. I'll buy a harness and also send you mine if you wanna work something out? Or do you fix harnesses? If so,whats the turn around time? I'm kinda pressed for time at the moment. :(

You still have the old harness from the car? Right? Cut and splice. Look at the pics and schematics above.

  • 3 months later...

Hello once again fellow Datsun enthusiasts....

I have been studying and reading for months now and still I can not get my ZXT to ZX to start! :( I am pretty positive I have all the wiring correctly wired up now but I can not get any spark? I have done all the power tests with a multimeter and I have power in all the right spots.

My problem now is,I can't get spark? I hear the fuel pump kick in and run for the 5 secs,I also have the green LED light lit on the ECU,I have 12 volts at the coil,CAS,and everywhere else. I smell gas when trying to start it but I get no spark out of the coil or any of the plugs?

Starting to think I was sold a bad ignitor or I have a bad distributor/CAS? Don't have the oscillator tool to test the if their bad.

Another head stratcher is,I don't have any kind of "pluse" coming from the signal wire to the ignitor?

When I rebuilt the engine after I bought it,it was missing the TPS and the CHTS to begin with so I bought a new CHTS and used my brand new TPS off my N/A motor. Airflow meter and ignitor were bought off members here. Along with my harness. Which was in better shape then the other ZXT harness I had.

I have read, downloaded the FSM and I also have a Hyanes manual. I have been going over everything for over a month and a half and still can't get it started. It just turns over and gets fuel but no spark to start it. :(

I don't wanna buy a new CAS, or igniter cause their 200 and 300 a pc. :(

Yes I'm asking for help! Lol I'm all searched out and more then confused by all the info I learned over the past 3 1/2 months now! I'm leaning towards, bad parts or something super simple that I keep over looking!?

And the last thing,I also can not get the RPM gauge to work? It def worked before the swap. I can't get the dash gauge to work or my Apexi RSM to get any kind of tach action? I'm pretty sure I found the tach wiring with the resistor box it plugs into but no matter how I wire it,no RPM actionm even ran a new wire and also tried the factory wire in the N/A harness and still nothing?

Any answers, questions, suggestions and/or ideas will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! This has been a yr long swap project now! ;( I've done swaps in Honda's and VW's and the likes and those were pretty ez for the most part. This one is killing me and its MY CAR! Lol

Thanks for all the help so far everyone with finding parts, sellin me parts and helping me with this project! Hybridz is def worth the donations!!! Hope to hear from all you swap experienced owners... Your. Input will be noted, and saved and greatly appreciated!!! Thanks again and in advance!!!

I had a bad ignitor that caused me major headaches...do the GM HEI swap in lieu of an expensive factory ignitor. Here's how to do it...

http://m.zdriver.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27569&styleid=19

I think the info and pics are elsewhere as well, I forget if you have to be a member to view the pics in the link.

Thank you for that link. I read a post sometime ago about that kind of swap but couldn't find it recently actually. Was def thinking of trying that cause of the price difference! And I'm am a member of Hybridz and Zcar so I (hopefully) shouldn't have a problem viewing them.

I have ran into a bunch of old posts and links that are dead now also. :/ Thank you for the speedy responce also.. I was at Road America yesterday for the Le Mans race and we took my friends drop top S4. Needless to say,we found plenty of ppl to play with to and from the track. Which is about 50mins from my house. And after looking at my build, playing there and back,it lit my fire to the max! I wanna get this started at all costs!!! Lol Plus,I think I can def take my friends S4. :)

And when I say all costs,I don't mean that literally.. I mean as in work, study, labor, time spent, well before throwing money at it. I swear, some of you and myself also, should have PhD's in Datsuns!!! Then again, having too much knowledge is/can be confusing as f+"*. Lol

So,I'm gonna install the HEI Ignitor from an 1980 Chevette and see what happens today. Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe a way to test or check the CAS inside the distributor? Been reading/searching again for 2 days and still outta ideas. :( Found remanned Distributor from NAPA for 283.00!? EBay has one also for 260.00! Any other way to check it before dropping another 300.00?? I'm almost 2k into this engine now. :( Shoulda just went with a carb'd V-8!!!!

Get the HEI in before you go stressing about the dizzy being bad. You may be pleasantly surprised after the install. I know I was kicking my self once my swap finally started up, woulda never guessed the ignitor woulda gone bad...but the HEI did the trick.

Thanks again, and I will DEFINITELY install the HEI before doing anything else besides, reading and checking everything again. And again after that. Lol

Make sure you have the resistor pack for the injector drive. I have the same exact setup and that's the first problem we ran into when we began to install it.

Thanks glup...Scumbag... Lol

I am def not familiar with that part at all. Now I will be reading AGAIN about another tucked away part? Lol Where's the part located and is this something that plugs into the EFI harness?

I have an 83 ECU and either an 82 or 83 harness. And yes,the engine is an 83.. Never heard or came across an,"Injector Drive Resistor" yet.

Thanks again for pointing something out. Didn't make it to the store today to grab the HEI ignitor but I DEF WILL TOMOR!
