richie2619
Well, I finally got a chance to sit down and inspect my differential. It would appear that it was dropped from a considerable height I guess you get what you pay for. Now I have the dubious pleasure of returning it to Malaysia... grr
RB26powered74zcar
I really don't see a reason to send it back. I think they can handle those scuffs.
RebekahsZ
Get a machinist to clean that up for you. Still useable. Super easy to drop oily, smooth, heavy parts. You could just as easily drop the next one yourself.
JMortensen
Just check to see that the ring gear mating surface is true. If you have ring gear runout, then your backlash will be impossible to adjust properly.
richie2619
The rim on the (short side), the plate that covers the internals, was pushed in to the point that it distorted the hole. About 2mm. Look closely at the 1st and third pic. The 1st one shows through the good hole, how far out of round it is. Do you think re-drilling it would be ok? I'm not trying to be an ass. It just makes me kind of nervous. It fell pretty hard. Edited February 28, 2014 by richie2619
richie2619
Maybe I can just forego the shim in that hole... LOL
duragg
A good machine shop should be able to match drill with respect to the Ring Gear and salvage all that. You can always have it balanced afterwards if it makes you feel better, but its turning relatively slowly. I vote to Keep.
richie2619
Thanks everyone. I really hoped it could be salvaged.
RebekahsZ
If you decided you wanted to just sell it, I have a friend who would relieve you of that LSD if the price was well below the price of a virgin unit. PM me if you would consider parting ways with it. Have a minimum price in mind.
Tony D
Did you report this to the shipping company, and was it insured? This is easily a shipping damage claim, where you can claim repair costs or outright replacement. The postal service lost a LOT of stuff during Katrina and insurance paid out lots of claims. But wouldn't the return cost be as much as you paid for it? Our wonderful freight department refused a crated set of compressor rotors DHL airfreight back to Kuala Lumpur and that was $440! (Actually cheap if you consider the size/weight!) I agree this is repairable...but I would make a claim against the shipper to see what consideration you can get. That it was packed in cardboard and not properly crated they may tell you "pound sand" at which time I would consider asking the shipping/selling entity to work a replacement part or defray repair costs. Asaluh m'lekum, it's not good business lah!
richie2619
Yes, I opened a case file with the shipper. If it is repairable, I'm going to ask them for the cost. Thank you
