Reasonable Rates?

Recommended Posts

I just put my Z in the shop to get the MegaSquirt ECU wired up as well as some other various electrical things wired up. They quoted me about $100/hr for the wiring and said it would take 4 hrs to get everything wired and loomed. I just wanna know if it is a reasonable rate?

Typical labor rate is $100/hr +/-$10 for most independent shops from what I've seen.

4 hours to have your MS wired up and the car running sounds pretty damn good to me. Some people spend weeks trying to get everything right and still can't pull it off. $400 sounds like a lot but if you've got the cash and want someone else to do it for you right the first time (assuming they have the ability and experience) I'd say that's more than worth it.

Sounds right for a generalist e-shop. A high performance specialist shop would likely be in the $120+ per hour range.

The question is, "new harness supplied / hack stock harness" or "manufacturing new harness"?

That could make a huge difference in time and hourly charges....

I was thinking more along the lines of insanely over-optimistic.  4 hours?  So do they have all of the necessary connectors, and the MS and all of the sensors are already mounted or you at least know exactly where they are all going to go?

Did they quote you 4 hours of labor to do the job (i.e. it will cost $400), or did they say that they would charge $100/hour and that they thought it would "only take" 4 hours (i.e., it will cost $100 x how many hours it actually takes)?

They quoted me for four hours but this shop in particular only works on Z cars so that might be a factor for why it takes less time. I had all the sensors in place so the only thing I could see being time consuming is adapting the stock harness to the MegaSquirt wiring.

Does that include setup and getting you out the door?

I helped a friend do a plug and play megasquirt for another car and that still took over an hour (new plug for temp sensor, vacuum line routing, basic setup).

Granted if they have done these installs several times before, have the base tune files on hand, and their wiring guy doesn't drag his feet it could be done pretty well at 4 hours.
