npayton86 Posted November 16, 2015 Share Posted November 16, 2015 I know that this has probally been covered before. this is my first time posting on here and my first time owning a z and i am very excited. i have a 1981 280zx non turbo. the guy beofre me replaced all the injectors and hoses and put a new furl pump in it. it wont start and the fuel pump will run some of the time but sounds kinda crunchy at times. i just dont know where to start because sometimes it will start and run for 10 minutes just fne then other days it wont start and the fuel pump wont do any thing. We do have a nice section called trouble shooting for...trouble shooting so I would post there for questions of this nature. This is a pretty basic procedure. Start at the return line, take it off and turn the key on, fuel should leak out. If it does not, start going backwards until you find the source of your problem or end up at the fuel tank. Based off of some of the information you provided it sounds like the pump is potentially running dry or contaminated or breaking down. Taking out the fuel pump and the fuel pump filter and making sure the lines are clear of rust will help a great deal, you can also test the fuel pump off the car to check that it is working. npayton86 Posted November 16, 2015 Author Share Posted November 16, 2015 i did find out messing with it today that the fuel relay behind the glove box the green and green red wire are getting hot and if i pull the fuel pump relay out closet to the cab under the hood i get powerr back there but not if i plug it back in also now the fuel pump dosnt turn on at all i also ran new wires from the relay under the dash to the pump because they werre in bad shape ( corroded, and split) Thanks again four help forr all your help i hope to get her back on the road soon. Pharaohabq Posted November 16, 2015 Share Posted November 16, 2015 Sounds to me like the fuel pump is getting clogged up. I'd pull the pump off and take a look in the nozzles. Maybe bench test it with a battery/trickle charger. I bet it's not running. It's either that or the AFM switch is buggy. but test the pump since that's what's not working. npayton86 Posted November 17, 2015 Author Share Posted November 17, 2015 mine dose have somethign like the afm its at the end of the intake tube before the air cleaner says something airmaxx i cant make it out its pretty worn down ill take a picture and post it later so you guys can tell me.
