Revenant
So I'm getting ready to mount my T-5 to the bellhousing. I changed the gear oil, and while tipping the transmission to work out the old mount bolts, I noticed A LOT of gear oil pouring out of the tailshaft housing. Is this normal? The oil seal back there looks fine. I guess my question is if the seal is actually made when the driveshaft slip-yoke is slid in, or if it should be all sealed up as is. Miles
Yes, normal. Next time add fluid after it is installed. Use a hand pump and some hose that fits in the fill hole. Fluid should be level with the bottom of the fill hole.
LLave
I highly recommend you pick up a service manual of some sort and do some reading. Could save you a lot of time and damaged parts.
Miles
Google T5 transmission service manual pdf and download it
Revenant
Thanks all! I've got the service manual and it's helped a lot during the process. I couldn't find that tidbit in there. I guess maybe it's just supposed to be common knowledge.
Tony D
An old Driveshaft stub and rubber trucker's strap stops that leak. They make plastic plugs for removing/installing trannies without draining. On some of the Datsun stuff, there are spray can tops that slip over the dust cover, and have an inner cup that snaps onto the spray can that slips right inside the seal lip as well...making for a super-cheap plug! I want to say "Wal Mart Carb Cleaner" is one of the caps that works...
nathaninwa
Some driveshaft slip yokes are splined all the way through and a dust cap seal is pressed in. Sometimes over the years these fall out or are beaten out by previous owners
