joem64
Building a street car with an F54 block and an E88 head. Should the head gasket match the block or head?? The 240 block deck looks quite a bit different than the 280zx block deck.... joe in WI
NewZed
If there are no passages in the head the coolant has no where to go. And the head is probably more sensitive to coolant flow than the block. That would be my reasoning. Match the head, I'd say. Opinion. Andreas
Should match the block not the head. In your case you should have a gasket for F54 Not for the N42 block.
NewZed
Andreas is right, considering bore size. I was thinking of the classic N42, N47, F54, P90 head and gasket problem. L28 heads on L28 blocks. You have an L24/L26 head on an L28 block so an L24/L26 gasket might not seal the bore. Take measurements and consider coolant flow. Leon
The L24 head gasket's fire ring is just a little too small to work on an L28... don't ask how I know. Get an L28 gasket that best matches the E88. Can't say I have an answer on that.
joem64
Thanks for all of the replies. Figured someone has done this already....thought it was the 'thing' to install E31 heads on 280Z blocks... I've had my block bored out 1mm over. I'm not sure what's what when looking at the holes and such, what's oil, what's coolant. Interesting. thanks again, i'll dig a little myself and see what i figure out. joe in WI
BJSZED
I just put a 72 E88 on 81 F54. The F54 had the original P79 head which had two more coolant openings. When I put on the Felpro gasket listed for the 81 F54 block , I drilled out the two openings the E88 head didn't have. I fed a wire up through other openings to make sure I was drilling into a coolant passage. Edited November 16, 2016 by BJSZED
