Hindsight Being 20/20??

Recommended Posts

If there was one thing that you could do over or different what would it be? Yes I'm just bored but the answers I recieve may help me to miss a pitfall that I would have otherwise fallen into. I looking things like " should have put in ac" "I put in this five speed now I want an automatic" Put on wimpy brakes really need the outlaw 4000's!" Thanks much Keith 2thumbs.gif

I wouldn't have taken on so much bodywork, but I know that if I hadn't I would have wished I did.......so I guess so far, I don't have many regrets, but maybe when the project is done!...if that ever happens?

Sometimes I regret even starting the project in the first place, mainly because I get too absorbed/obsessed with it, but then I come to my senses. I will probably go with the Outlaw front brake setup because I've heard the stories and drawbacks (weight) of the expense that the Toyota upgrade involves.

enough rambling....

I put the chevy LS1 motor in mine and now I wish I had MTI heads and cam. Their is just not ever enought HP. If you go mid 12's you want to go mid 11's. If you run 11's you want to run 10's. To me and LS1 with heads and cam would be the perfect way to go whatever times, and still be perfectly at home on the street. bonk.gif

First time out bought a 280R (R=rust bucket!!!) I shopped around and found a 73 240Z. If you find a car that has rust (major rust) just walk away unless it's a give away price with some really good parts (ie interior/sellable (sp) parts) the savings in time, money and effort are well worth paying a few more dollars for. I lucked out on the 280R. I sold the head (MS) for $100 the header $80, Cartech 4 barrel intake $75 and a few misc. parts to make up for the initial investment. I have left over a brand new windshield (that I need, mine is pitted real bad), an R200 rearend (to replace the R180 in the 240) super nice door panels (that I will use later) and full set of swastika rims with center caps that are on my 240 now. I gave $600 for the 280R and feel that I have made my money back on the deal plus I have a parts car to scavenge parts off of (ones that will fit anyway). So hindsight being 20/20 DON’T BUY A RUSTY CAR!!!

Best of luck on your project!!!

David

The one thing I am beginning to regret in my 350/TH350 swap into an 81 ZX is the fact that i tried to do a 1200.00 conversion. Well, i succeeded in doing that conversion, but in cheaping out on the donor parts (bought a used 69 chevy truck for 400 bucks) and in exhaust work (good exhaust costs more than 250.00), that i've pretty much replaced one worn out old motor and transmission with another worn out old motor and transmission. :< It was great for a practice run, and i really know what i want now, but damn did I waste some time! I know it's a drop in the bucket $$ wise compared to what this is gonna cost me to really do it right, and i now know first hand what it takes to do the conversion right, but that was a lot of work just to have to do it again!

cheap in the short run is more expensive in the long run ;) If your looking for a car, pick one that is as rust free as possible. When deciding on engine mods, Build it to handle more power than you plan on having. It will last alot longer.Always build with more power than you think you will need because later you`ll wish you had,and pay attention to the small details. They are what make a nice car a great car rockon.gif

Regrets:

1) do the research before you start

2) plan the project & work the project plan

3) cheap parts = cheap parts and work to do over at some point.

1/3 of my project $$$ has been spent on a car with a good body and a dead motor & rear end and jobs done more than once. bonk.gif After swaping engines (2 times), trans (2 times) & rearends (4 times) and many hours to put the car back to stock just find out it doesn't have the performance I was looking for. If I had done 1,2 & 3 from above my Z would have a V8 in it now for the $$$ already spent trying to find HP in the 6. Hard lesson learned!
