Guest gtmattz
Hey guys, Im starting the process of taking my 280Z down to the shell. I was wondering if anyone has any advice for keeping all the parts in order so that when it comes time for reassembly I wont be pulling my hair out or making the 3 hour trip to the nearest U-Pullit for some important piece that got misplaced. I know that quite a few of you fellas have done this and was just wondering what you did to keep things orderly. Thanks in advance for any advice. Tim240z
Lots of different size cardboard boxes and ziplock baggies. Strip one section of the car at a time, fill the box and baggies while marking the contents with a sharpie. I have also found that some plastic containers (cheap at the grocery store) with lids for different size/pitch nuts and bolts works well. I found that the 5lb fruit trays from Costco (or whichever warehouse club store in your area) works really nicely for nuts and bolts. They are strong, have lids, stack perfectly and have 5 or 6 dividers.
Guest Anonymous
Label everything. Put specific systems (ex rt front suspension) in a labeled box. Make labels for the wiring harness and then cover them with clear packing tape so they will not fall apart or get covered with grease. Much easier to assemble things if you can read the labels. Take you time taking things apart so you don't damage them and make a list of parts that will need to be replaced as you find them. That way you can get them before you start putting things back together. Good luck. Mark
V8ZRACER260Z
I used a label maker from WallMart. It was less than $20.00 and electronically makes printed labels that are permanent and weather proof. I am keeping everything indoors though. I also used alot of plastic bins & tubs to sort out the small bolts & bigger pieces. Good Luck.
BillZ260
I tried to keep up with my parts but was having so much fun taking the car apart and seeing how everything was designed and fitted together that I didn't really keep all that good track of them. What I did do was put all similar parts and fasteners into ONE BIG BOX. Like all the interior parts and fasteners in one ect. ( I used a exercise bike box for this)
datsunlover
Yah, me too.. I have a photographic memory, so once I take something apart, I know how it has to go back together.. but I try to put things all in one spot.. (interior screws/clips/ect in a box, and so on) cause knowing how to but it back together is no good if there are parts missing!
spotfitz
I put all the bolts back through the hole of the part it was holding on and then taped it in place. Labeling everything as I went. Connections in the harness, what part went where and if a part bolted to a part that was also being removed I would bolt them back together after removal. I have almost the whole garage for the parts so I stacked everything in sections as they came off. I didn't do the suspension(since I had already replaced everything), but the only thing left in my Z was the dash, the inside seat belt holder and the emergency brake handle(which will all be coming out once it comes back from paint jail). I'll let you know how my system worked in about a month. Like datsunlover, once I pull something apart, I can put it back together and seldom ever end up with extra parts. Dp351zcar
I have just put everthing but the body parts in one pile under my house. Lots of the little parts and bolts into a couple buckets. Body parts are where ever they can fit and be out the way outsight. I plan to have fun putting this thing together as parts usally only fit one way, or so I hope. Wagz
Baggies, boxes, a Magic Marker and lots of shelf space. The only additional thing I did that wasn't mentioned by the other guys is that I used a digital camera. I took pictures of EVERYTHING in all the stages of disassembly and burned them to a CD. I've taken my laptop and those pictures out to the garage on a couple of occasions to use as a reference while putting things back together. Guest gtmattz
thanks for all the replys folks. Ive decided that the labeled boxes/buckets and taking lots of pictures with my digital camera looks like the best way to go. fun part is that the kid i got the car from had started stripping the interior, so the car is full of random screws/trim pieces that im going to have to sort out eventually, for now those parts can just hit the 'interior' bucket.
