TomoHawk
How many are they going to shoot up there? Eventually, they are going to start colliding and we'll end up polluting the apace all the WAY around the planet! It'll be like smog, only instead of localizing it around cities, it'll be EVERYWHERE when you look up. The things range from flecks of paint to open-end wrenches to parts of the Saturn V rockets (that haven't fallen back). Even the little flecks of paint at the speed they travel can put a hole through a space suit and probably through a person, let alone a whole rocket stage (only a few tons)! If it didn't burn up while falling through the upper atmosphere, it would rain down on our heads! In case you didn't know, the space shuttle has been hit at least twice, one putting a big pit in a front window. Eventually they will stop sending up the space shuttle because it'll blow up every time from getting hit. We should limit how many Satellites are up there. Especially with the space station getting built, as big as it is; there is the biggest risk. Lotsa people with plain clothes in a pressurized tube of air. One hit, and they're all DEAD. You gotta ask yourself, "Is all this risk from all these people worth me having the same radio station everywhere I go? Or phone service? Cell phone towers is another peave of mine. I got along without cell phone all of my life, why can't others?
Synlubes
When Will We (er, they) Learn ? We (er, they) have polluted everything else . All for the mighty (er, not so mighty) buck . just my opinion.
randy 77zt
even if good ole usa quits shooting soon to be scrap metal in to space those wannabe third world countries will do it just to show that they dont have to pay the usa to shoot up thier satalites.as far a cell phones go most other countries that are behind in installing phone systems are going all cellular-less maintenance than copper wires or fiber optic cables.plus the locals wont try to sell it for scrap. Moridin
There was an interesting show on "The Learning Channel" about how the space program is going to have to deal with scrap metal moving so fast that it could blow huge holes in the side of a shuttle. They went on to talk about how the NASA guys were working on energy shields and such to block against a collision. Sounds like Star Wars is closer than we think (especially with that space ship flying out towards Pluto powered by an ion drive propulsion) EDIT: Looks like than was my 500th post. Looks who's the guru now Guru: only because the site says so Idiot: definitely

Moridin
We actually went over that in a physics class, believe it or not. A study showed that the return on NASA spending was something like 8 to 1. The money that our government puts into NASA, it gets something like 8 times the amount back. That's a lot of money. Um, how old are you? This has probably been done a number of times in your lifetime. They just dont put anything on TV anymore because it is "routine". No one in the media really cares until there is a tragedy. Humans suck. I will be selling tickets soon for the outer-space Escape from Earth mission. silicone boy
Tomohawk, I was wondering what prompted this thread. Thoughts like this keep me awake all the time. I just can't stop obsessing about "stuff", and things that I should pay attention to, well, they kind of get put on the back burner by things like whether Goofy is a genius of a dog or Pluto is retarded (after all, they are both dogs and one talks and the other one doesn't)
RPMS
Nah, you don't want to move into space. Z's run crappy in zero oxygen environments.

TomoHawk
Tomohawk' date='I was wondering what prompted this thread... [/quote'] Every time I see or hear a commercial Ad for DirecTV (or other satellite-broadcast TV) or XM radio (or other satellite-broadcast radio) I think of all those kamikaze satellites up there taking a bead on each other. Other than the overpopulation problem, don't you think there is enough STUFF here on Earth? Soon, we won't even be able to GET to Mars, because of the junk up there. We seem to be more interested in digging up the planet and turning it into orbiting JUNK. Star Trek shows show you that NEO (NearEarth Orbbit) is peaceful & clean. You ever see a satellite up ther on Star Trek? NO! Maybe by the year 2200 or 2400, we'll have eliminated all that stuff up there (naybe even the "ozone hole" and life in space will be beautiful. There's an idea: a satellite that shoots down space junk. It seems to me that there have been less UFO sightings lately. Probably because even THEY are afraid to traverse the layer of space junk! Anybody got a catchy name for the area/layer of space junk ( like smog for pollution over cities)?Hmmmmmm.... NEOjunk.
BayAreaZT
Satellites will not colide into each other. Depending on the mission of the spacecraft, it will have a different orbit and there are limitless amounts of orbits up there.
JMortensen
This got me reading, and I did find this article: http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/launches/spacejunk-1_824.html Apparently a French satellite was hit by an old French rocket and damaged. How about "sh!tosphere" for the name of floating junk in orbit? Jon
David K
You gotta ask yourself, "Is all this risk from all these people worth me having the same radio station everywhere I go? Or phone service? Yes, yes it is. My father has XM radio, and when we took the Voyager up to San Fransisco, it was a nice trip, no commercials to break the comfortable music. More satellites! Cell phone towers is another peave of mine. I got along without cell phone all of my life, why can't others? Ever stopped at a greasy dirty payphone every 20 minutes to make a phone call? I transport my son around all day, and run errands, and have the occasional talk with a friend. Ive lent my cell to stranded motorists so they could call for help. Its save countless hours, and also saved me and others from turning a small ordeal into a huge one. More cell phone towers!
Trevor
The greatest end product to trickle down from the space program to civilian / commercial use is..... cordless power tools!!! a close second is velcro.
Guest Aaron
The only orbits that have a finite number are the geo-synchronous orbits. Those are the satelites that stay over one spot above the earth (these are the satelites that the TV, Radio, and GPS systems use). Those satelites have to be placed around the equator, and they have to have a certain about of space between them so they don't interfere with one another. I once read that a 1oz piece of aluminum moving at the speeds it is moving in orbit would have the same impact as an 18 wheeler running 60MPH. I also think the astronauts, shuttle, and space station are in just as much danger from meteors.
TomoHawk
there are limitless amounts of orbits up there. I was sarcastic with the "kamikaze satellites" remark. You don't think they'd shoot up a @100 million machine, expecting it'll be junk soon. Otherwise, I dunno about the "limitless" part. If there are so many different orbits to go to up there, how come the space shuttle has gotten hit a few times? You might think a geo-synchronous orbit is safe, huh? Well, I think that all the stuff that's flying around randomly will probably collide with a geo-synchronous object, and add to the other junk, probably at a migher, "geo-synchrous" level. The things have to be at a propergeo-synchronous orbit, in sync with all the other objects. Anything less will create a hazard.
