Headwork Cost

What is a mildly ported and rebuilt P90a head worth. It was all done at a proffesional shop and looks like it is nice work. I don't know if it is the mechanical or hydraulic head, though. No picture that shows that, waiting for that info. :) Would that make a difference? I just need a rough estimate of what I should be offering this guy. Thanks.

Hmmm...

well you can usually get P90's in good shape for around $100-150

and mild headwork is usually about $200-300

maybe $400 max for one that's already done up?

The guy sent me some pics of the head with the work that was done. It is a P90a head but I can't tell from the pics if is Hydraulic or mechanical. Can anyone tell from these pics? Also look at some of the pics, the one of the valves I think I see some areas that weren't smoothed out and the the porting that was done has no polishing. It looks like minimal work was done on the head. He is asking $450, is that too much? I know it sounds it to me but maybe it is just expensive to do work on this head. I dunno. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Pete, I'd recommend buying a head bone stock and then having the work done on it by a reputable shop that is equipped with a flow bench. Pete P. has a guy he can recommend in Maryland that is VERY reasonable. This way you will be 100% sure of what you have and probably pay about the same!

That is a hydrolic head. It is a p90a .. Also looking at one of the pics I can see that it has no retaining springs for the rocker arms. This also confirms it is a hydrolic head. It looks nice. I would find out what kind of cam he put in it as well as if he ported it and see if he put in new aftermarker springs and valves. Looks nice.. but again.. you just never know..

Good luck.

keep in mind, not ALL P90A's are hydraulic, though I agree from the pics it looks like this one is. I have come across three P90A's that had the regular mechanical lifters...

unless they were converted? I didn't think that was possible

525 - i've heard and read that when they first introduced the P90A head, they were using whatever they had left of the mechanical stuff in the 3 plants. So possibly some of the earliest built '83's, like with build dates 9/82, had the p90A head with mechanicals installed.

Pete - We just sent my cousins P90A head out to get boiled, seats and valves ground, milled, guides and seals - cost $300. I think he quoted another $200 to port and polish. Not sure if this helps any but hope it does. Good luck.

Yup, hence the confusion over people calling them the "P90A Mechanical Head". I had one years ago and people continuosly called me a liar and corrected me... Until I popped the hood... THEN they would ask How I made a hybdraulic head work on my motor...

It got old trying to explain the combo and the differences.

I've read on here that 'rebuilding' or refreshing the hydraulic lifters is not a big deal at all... a lot of people shy away from the hydraulic heads as they feel once the lifters 'go bad' they are screwed, as these parts are 99% impossible to find replacements for and are super expensive if you can. I think if it really is easy for a home mechanic to refresh them himself, I'd prefer the hydraulic head for not having to worry about adjusting the valves and having a quiter head. Some also say that they are not good for high revving engines... for me not an issue as I run the stock turbo and dont make power above 5500rpm anyways :)

With a stock cam, springs and lash pads, adjusting the valves should not be something you do very often, perhaps once a year, or two.

Even with a new aftermarket cam, if properly installed and lashed, you should not be adjusting the valves very often, unless you are spinning over 7k, which we all know is not the smartest thing to be doing anyway.
