350Z Encounter

Phantom

Recommended Posts

I made a run at lunch yesterday and ended up beside a silver 350Z. The driver looked to be about 30 - kind of yuppie in dress, haircut, etc. Anyway I gave him a smile & a wave and got the standard blank stare in return. Jeez, I wish these guys would join the club. A little while later he came up beside me again - guess he heard my exhaust - and did a "power demonstration". I didn't even bother -I just watched him go and let him be secure in the knowledge that his 350Z was superior to the old 280Z - NOT!

Lol, i have an episode of 'fifth gear' a car show here in the UK, where they dragged a 280zxt (i think thats what it was) vs a 350Z... needless to say, the 280zxt won :D

I read one of the more recent Sport Z magazines where they compared three "boosted" 350Z's. The one thing I came away with was that the fastest one through the quarter mile was still slower than my LS1 powered 280Z. Haven't felt a real need to prove anything since then - especially with the NA versions.

Don't get me wrong, though, I think the 350Z is a great car and the long-term plan is to get an automatic equipped roadster for my wife as a daily driver and weekended for the both of us. Just won't ever race it.

Phantom, remember that white 350z next to us when you gave me a ride? Going 110 in 3rd gear leaving his ass on a side road was fun :D I still have those goosebumps.. haha

of all the new 350 z's I have seen on the road while i have been out driving my 240, i dont think a single one of them new i was in a Z. I give them a nice smile and little hand wave out the window, and they just look at me and smirk, like "that guy wishes he had my car" and then try to look real cool speeding away. I woudl show them whats up, but it is not worth the gas, especialy at $2+ a gallon. wankers

Shoulda rolled down your window and said

I agree... I dislike that most 350z guys don't even seem to recognize an older Z at all. I've taken out a few of the new Z's already. The best run was against a silver convertible though... this guy hadn't even gotten his plates yet, sitting there with the top down. But he was the first guy that knew what my car was, or aknowledged it at least. The funny part was this was when my rings were bad and my motor was smoking pretty bad.

Guy in the 350z: "nice Z, is it a '71?"

Me: "A '72"

350z: "Done a lot of work to it?"

Me: "eh... a little"

350z: "Is it any fast?"

Me: "I dunno, is it? "

so of course we went for it and I pulled away from him pretty good by second I had a couple cars on him easy. Funny thing was my motor was puffing smoking big time and it looked like quite a bit went right over and in his nice new convertible. Anyways he blew past me when I turned at the next light with a thumbs up... I dunno about him but if that was me I'd have been like "My $37K sports car just got dusted by a primered, smoking 30 year old car... I'm going back for a refund!!!"

Nope - you just ran across one of the semi-knowledgable 350Z drivers that was actually cool. I've met a few myself and have been working within my Z club to "upgrade our image" to attract more of the 350Z guys. It's important to get them included as the 350Z is part of the future of the Z car and to the clubs that support them. It's also important to get them involved to maintain dealership support of the clubs. I look at it as a "mission field" to try to educate these guys & gals and bring them into the fold. Of course "educating" may include a little "schooling"

Well, unfortunately that mentality isn't just with 350Z owners. That same kinda attitude runs deep in the import, Mustang, Fbody, Vette, and most other crowds... There is always a turd in the punchbowl at some point in time.

What it boils down to is EGO... There is a very strong rumor running around my area that my Vette is Supercharged, which it isn't. But NONE of the "Fast Guys" will line up with my bone stock Vette. I think it is funny as hell. However, They want to talk trash and then if you dust one of them at a stop light grudge match while in your Wife's Taurus, they won't even acknowledge you for it. Punks!

I say let them stay in their little happy safe world... Be nice if we could add them to the Lawyers and Insurance Agent pool!

of all the new 350 z's I have seen on the road while i have been out driving my 240, i dont think a single one of them new i was in a Z.

That's because they're not Z enthusiasts, and they could not possibly care less about the marque. I noticed the same thing at the last BMW gathering I attended. Young drivers in brand new M3's arrived late, hung around looking bored, then after about an hour they cranked up their stereos and left. Not like anyone missed them - they knew nothing about their cars, and didn't appear to give a rat's ass about any of the excellent older cars there. I made a comment to the event director about it their leaving early, and she said, "Yeah, well, they're off to the next new thing."

The vast majority of new Z drivers will sell their cars in two years, and climb into a mustang, then in two years they'll trade in for a new Mini. They want to drive something new and sporty, and they could care less what it is. Only a few will understand the significance of the Z they're driving or why it's special. You usually only see that sort of comprehension in exotic cars or once a car has shaken all the "new car drivers" out of their seats. Only a true enthusiast will keep a car like the 350 once it's not new and cool anymore.

What's cool in Arlington/Fort Worth is that Don Davis Nissan is giving a years membership to the Cowtown Z Club to the buyers of new 350Z's at their dealership. The club has just relocated its meeting place to the Mercado Juarez Restaurant at Matlock & I-20 which is very close to Don Davis and a nice place. Hopefully that will encourage a little more 350Z participation. Our next meeting is the second Thursday in May - the 13th.

Our website: http://www.cowtownzclub.org is up but having technical difficluties at the moment so there is not much there and what little is is not current. More work to do.

Well not so sure about the 350z as a fad, and that being the reason that 350z owners dont seem to recognize or care for the older Z's. I've had a lot of run-ins with Z32 300zx owners where they either didn't know what the 240 was, or had this ATTITUDE... sometimes a real, detectable vibe of them thinking their car, and of course this somehow also means them, was superior... like the 240 was just below them. I think a lot of them as well really don't care that their driving a Z. Rather, it's this whole JDM/Rice thing, which is also being spread thru the gospel of video games. The message goes "Japanese cars are cool" and among them, the 300ZX, 350Z, Supra, RX7-8, WRX, Evo, 3000GT, and of course Skyline are THE supercars. But again... very few of them ever pick up on the heritage or lineage of some of these lines that extend back 20-30 years.

However all is not lost :) While lost on most the ZX crowd, I've had more than one kid driving a slammed honda compliment me on my car... And the few that have noticed the boost gauge have been in awe :D
