Anyone else watching "5th Gear"... HOLY CRAP!

They had a Titan Lotus 7 kit car, street legal, and were going for the 0-60 record for street legal cars (in Europe anyway). They got it. 2.97 seconds!!! On low profile tires. Took the old record from the Ford Escort RS200 Evo from the early 80's.

This 7 had twin 1200cc Kawasaki engines (I think they said 200 hp each) and they didn't use auto transmissions to make them work. They used 2 manual transmissions and had a split shifter so that you could shift gears together for both front and back, or you could shift just the front or just the back. They did blow one of the engines while trying to best the 2.97.

Just amazing!!!

Reminded me of my high school years. There was a guy in the building I worked in who had a LARGE collection of rally cars and stored them in one of the warehouses in the same complex. In particular I remember the Renault R5 Turbo II, and the RS200. His RS200 Evo was "not stock" and had an intercooler (roof mounted) that was about a foot thick and the full width of the car. It was a 2L, and he claimed it was pushing 800 hp. I asked him what the little lever next to the shifter was, and he said it was to shift from front wheel drive to all wheel drive or rear wheel drive, on the fly. The car was fly yellow with a skull and crossbones on the doors and hood. He claimed 1.9 0-60 times. I believed him. He also told me the story of buying the car, which required something like $400,000 (when it was "stock") when he bought it sometime in the late 80's and a trip to Germany where he was taught how to drive it.

The new show is good, and it brought back fond memories of hyperfast AWD cars. Just had to share... I know I'm going to have fast dreams tonight.

I watched that. It was very good, even though when he went to try for another record he put a rod through the side of the block of one engine. Sounded like he did it missing a shift, but who knows. I couldn't believe they let the host of the show do the driving to beat the record!

Did you see the "pot test". What in the hell was that?

I then watched the next one which matched up the EVO and the WRX. I loved the drifting that the host was doing with these cars.

The pot test was lame. Can you maneuver a car at 3 mph while stoned? The surprising answer: Yes! You can!

I'm not convinced that pot is too much of a problem when driving (had a couple of friends who were better faster mountain bike riders when stoned), but you need a test that is a little tougher than that. I coulda had 10 shots of Tuaca and aced that test at those speeds.

Tiff is on it too..

Ahhh, that's her name. Cute and she can drive! And she's got that sexy accent...

jmortesen,

Tell your buddies to be careful getting high and then going mountain bike riding in the heat. Back "in the days" I use to do the same thing. I got done riding one day and loading the bikes up for the trip back home and on the way home while driving I literally lost my sight for about 20 seconds from the lack of oxygen getting to my brain. It made for a fun drive. Me working the gas and clutch/shifting while my co-pilot was turning us into a parking lot. Although, right now I would probably pass out just riding normally in my present physical condition. This said as I'm shoveling in my 2nd 1/4 lbs double cheese burger.

I will admit one thing though. You can ride pretty quick while high.

And yes, it was a very lame way to not show a damn thing of importance.

mildly drunk drivers are much safer drivers than people who have not slept for more than 36 hrs. according to a study i just read. pretty interesting, they were saying how the tired people just didnt give much attention to the driving...while the ones who were drunk were very alert...but also very spastic....but the drunk ones didn't hit as many cones as the people who were very tired.

Driving while stoned is fairly easy...because going 20 mph seems like light speed. i guess it all depends on you comfort level, i'll never drive drunk...but i've driven stoned houndreds of times, never got into an accident...or gotten a serious ticket, other than my only ticket...which was 14 over..and i wasnt stoned.

It isn't like he's some journalist that has never been behind the wheel of a powerful car before....

Name: Tiff Needell

Nationality: Great Britain

Date of birth: October 29, 1951 - Havant, Hampshire

Needell's racing career took off after he won a Formula Ford car through a competition in Britain's Autosport magazine. Having been interested in trying to advance his career but not having the money, Needell leapt at the opportunity and won the Formula Ford title in 1975. The remainder of the 1970s saw Needell as a front runner in the British Formula 3 series and then in the Aurora British Formula One championship. In 1979 he was unable to graduate to the F1 World Championship due to the lack of the correct licence, but he was back in 1980, driving two Grand Prix for Ensign, qualifying for one, the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder.

Since then, Needell's racing career has mainly consisted of racing tin-tops (hard-topped cars), with varying levels of success in sports cars, historic racing and touring cars. He achieved particular notoriety after an accident with Nigel Mansell at the 1993 TOCA shoot out race at Donington Park. However, Needell is best known in his native country as a noted television presenter and television and print motoring journalist, in particular in association with the BBC TV series Top Gear.

Very cool show though. I wish we'd get Top Gear over here.

Reminds me of a joke...

Q: What's the differance between a drunk driver and a stoned driver?

A: A drunk driver runs the red light and the stoned driver sits at the green.

well... i once sat at a stop sign for 20 minutes... and the worst part was i started getting pissed at it!!! the bastard just wouldn't turn green...

i agree with driving stoned not being such a big deal. i drove safer that way and paid MUCH more attention.but i gave up when every other driver on the road wasn't only a cop, but they knew i was high too...

so now i just smoke at home!!!!
