sulla
Hi I have an early 260z with an l28, triple webbers, springs, swaybars etc that is 75% done. I am thinking of trading it for a Manta Mirage. The Manta Mirage is a copy of a M8 Cam Am car. It came with a 350 chevy and weight was about 1800. Some pictures of what they look like..... http://www.mantacars.com/images/yu14.jpg'>http://www.mantacars.com/images/yu14.jpg http://www.mantacars.com/images/yu01.jpg'>http://www.mantacars.com/images/yu01.jpg http://www.mantacars.com Any way if they are fixed up they sale for about 15k-30k depending on how much you do to them. I think only about 300 or so were made. The example I am looking at is missing the motor and needs lots of tender loving car to get it right again. Any way what do you guys think? mark
I'd be all over it if you are looking for a track car. Would be very neat and different.
zero
as much of a z nut as I am, I would have to go for the manta. It would seem that it has all the qualities of the Z, light weight, v8 possibility, great looks, but to a greater extent. I would say build a monster out of it. innerware
go for it!!
Chaparral2f
I'd go for it in a Heartbeat! What does it use for a transaxle?
sulla
Thanks for the feed back guys. I am thinking go for the trade also as I will probobly not get another chance at one unless I buy one that is finished for around 15k. The Manta needs taken completly apart and redone but I think I could get my money out of it when I am done. Then again I am thinking maybe finish the Z and then sell it use that money tward a finished Manta. The Manta uses a Corvair transaxel thats fliped and a kelmart adapter to the 350. He has all the parts exept the motor. But since he had a 383 stroker in it I dont think the transaxel will end up being any good. Also since its a tube frame its easy to change mounts etc if you want to use an Audio 5000 or ZF transaxel etc.
80LS1T
Well I dont think that will be a daily driver! LOL Here's what I think.......me personally I like having a car that I can drive to work and have a ton of fun on the way. With that car there is no way you could drive that on the road with out getting pulled over every 10 miles. Dont get me wrong I think that car is very cool but I like having cars that I can drive every day. Is the Z only a track car? And what is the intended purpose of the new car? Do you just want to restore it and sell it? If thats the case then I say go for it! Build it up and sell it and buy a really nice 240Z! sulla
The 260 is going to be a road car mainly but maybe some autocross later. Not my main car but just a toy really. Hmm well the more I think about it. The more it seems to me that I can buy one that is finished for about what I would have in it when its done if my time is worth anything at all. I think I will watch it and see if the guy gets desperate to sell and if he sells it I will try and keep up with it for when the other guy gets sick of it:)
BillZ260
IF you have the time and enjoy working on a project, like most here, buy the project. If NOT, then find one finished or almost finished and drive it. You are going to be miserable if you have a heap sitting in the garage and have NO drive or desire to mess with it. Car looks very cool, depending on the situation, I may go for the same trade. I would check out alot of the structure. Check the welds, for rust and stuff like that jic you need to replace things. If only 300 were made, then you will probably either make the replacments yourself or pay someone else to. Just stuff to think about. Enjoy it and keep us posted... Mikelly
The manta gets my vote... I'd ditch my project in a hot minute for something like that. BTW, I've got the perfect motor for it if you decide to get it! Mike
BrandonsZ
It looks a little funky for me, too flashy, but I am making a sleeper. It would be fun though, 1800lbs with a z06 engine .
SpeedRacer
Sulla - We have two Manta's in our club and George Hutchinson has been known to drive it to work quite often in the summer but he always hopes for no rain because it leaks like a sieve. George owns the McLaren orange Manta and, if you want additional info on Manta cars, you can email him from our site http://www.usol.com/~hutch/profiles.htm
Z-Dreamer
I've wanted a Manta Mirage, patterned after the legendary McLaren M8 from the old Can Am series, since I was in high school. Checkout the link http://www.mantacar.com Then go to the classified section to see some that are for sale. Mark
AgentZ
Isnt there one of those on the orig. gone in 60 seconds?
Heavy Z
If I was doin it over and had the dough, I would look for something similar. With that ride you're like the blue whale of the car kingdom, wandering for years without seeing any of your kind. Something cool about that IMO. And, 1,800 lbs, tube chassis, V8!!! Good luck. P.S. Z's are fun, too!
sulla
Well I am still watching to see whats going to happen with the Manta. He is trying to get 4200 but no takers yet. I check on it every few days. I will talk to him again in a day or two and see whats the best offer he has had. Dave Houck's Manta Mirage looks interesting with all the mods he has done.
