I guess my 'frame comectors' are doing their job..

Recommended Posts

I finaly got around to instaling the rear wheels today, after much pain and suffering last week (changing to longer studs, building spacers, ect, to mount my recently purchaced 'cheep good deal' 16X7 rims.) AND a few scrapes and cuts.. :twak:

Anyway, I had the rear of the car on jack stands (jacked up by the rear diff to put them there) and instaled one wheel, then decided to drop the car so I could roll it out of the garage a bit to reposition it. (there was about 12" or less of working room on the drivers side) So to remove the last stocker and put the 'new' rim on, I just jacked the one side up. The wheel needed a bit more space than the stock 14", so I kept jacking.. then.. "creak" the jack starts to tip forward!! I stop and sit back, waiting for the worst, but it doesnt happen.. WTF? I look towards the front of the car and notice the FRONT wheel is now off the ground by about 2"!!! Wow.. So I get a jack stand under there, drop the jack, and install the last wheel/tire. Whew..

I did some quick math; New rims/tires end up about 1.250" bigger in diameter than what I had (185/60/14s too small, I know) so figure I had 1" between the tire and floor to hold the tire with my foot as I spun the nuts on.. I guess this means my frame conectors/sub frame are making their presence known! Just a weird thing to see the whole side of the car up when there's only one jack, just in front of the rear wheel...

I have a few, but they arn't very good quality. Also, I'm suprised in part because well.. they are not very 'nice' looking. I was learning to weld at the time, and although it's solid, it looks like the dogs breakfast..

All I did was take two lengths of 2x2" tube (.100" wall I think) and put them up into/in place of the original 'rails' by cutting the lower flat part off all along the floor. At the rear, I attached two short pieces of the same tube (welded to the long tubes before instalation) at an angle.. a bit less than 45* iirc and saw cut the other ends so they'd fit up to the stock rear subframe. Before going in the car, they sort of looked like this:

______________/[_

_______________/

At the front, I just welded them on to/into the factory floor/firewall tc rod area. On a proper hoist/lift, the car will rock a bit (about 1/8" or so) so I know they're not perfectly parallel to eachother, but I'll live with it. :) I'm working on the car in a proper garage now, and have a better camera.. I'll see if I can get some better pics.

  • 4 months later...

When I auto-xed my old '84 GTI I would jack right behind the front wheel and it would lift the front and back wheels so I only had to jack from one point on each side of the car to switch wheels. It only had front and rear strut braces. Now on my current daily driver a bone stock '03 SVT Focus if I jack behind the front wheel both front wheels and one rear wheels comes off the ground to a two point stance (sorta like that Neon). Cars are a LOT stiffer than they used to be.
