Pinks

How many of you have seen Pinks on the Speed channel... I have seen a few shows and thought how crazy you'd have to be to put the title of your car up for a race against someone you've never even met or seen..... Well a friend of mine called me a few weeks ago and told me that he contacted the people at Pinks when he heard that they were going to be at a local track to film several shows. After a bunch of interviews and screening he was selected. He asked me to help him and of course I did. Three shows were filmed this past Tuesday. We were the first show. We brought his supercharged Trans Am down and raced a Honda Civic. We also brought down a second trailer in the hopes that we would need it to bring home the competitor's car. Now you may say, no competition, but the Honda was stripped, probably weighed 1800 lbs (my guess) and the motor was turbocharged. Rumors were that the motor was making ~700HP to the wheels. We weighed our car and it weighed in at about 3800 lbs without a driver. Without getting into all of the details of the races that we had, the Honda driver was sandbagging some of the races and we had some parts break. It went 5 races. Bottom line.... we needed the second trailer and we took home the other guy's car :).

Another friend, who owns Carolina Auto Masters, was the "sponsor" of the car. Mike Kelly has met many of the guys on our team. Jeff Creech, owner of Carolina Auto Masters, tuned Mike's car and the shop where we dyno'd Mike's car, MSP Motor Sport Performance, also closed their shop and came down an helped. It was an INSANE day.

The filming of our race is supposed to be the premier show of next year's season... I think in February.

Is there any HybridZ content.... not really, but I was wearing my HybridZ hat during the race :)

Here are a couple of pictures of the cars.

I've seen the show and in a purely entertainment point of view it's kinda lame and annoying. It's annoying because the bald guy's trying to attempt to create drama and can't even start a race correctly. Lame in the sense that if you keep complaining that the competitor is more car than yours then turn around and go home and bring a better car. Now as far as whole concept of the show and giving lengths and such, it's ok. I just wished it was more real world where they just raced heads up and no giving of lengths because at least to me that is what racing for 'pinks' meant. Just my .02 cents

The thing I don't understand is why the show doesn't use a christmas tree.....just like any other drag race??? Would seem to me to be way more accurite and fair. Surely the show could afford that little item!!? IMO, the show is lame, right along with the dorks on Unique Whips and other like shows. I wouldn't let some of these guys work on a rollerskate!

If anyone has ever participated in true street racing for big money, you will find that there are no tree starts, no electronic timing and alot of BS talk. The show is trying to get that feel. I think they would have a tough legal issue if they ran these races on the streets instead of the track. As far as knowing the detail of the times and accuracy of the runs, that would ruin the edge that people get by sandbagging (running the car slower to either loose on purpose of barely win). If speed or times were given, it would change the entire show.

Just like I said in the beginning, I am not a huge fan of the show, but to have a chance to participate (with no real risk to me because the car was not mine) was fun. We had a plan and certian things were done to try and give us an edge. We truely had some things break and there were some stressful moments. I can say for sure that my participation has confirmed my original feelings about the BS that is involved in true street racing.

When we had to unhook certian things, like the nitrous, we fumbled like it was a hard thing to do.... but when we negotiated it back after "loosing" a couple of races, we all of a suddenly had all the right tools and it only took seconds to connect.

I have no idea how our team is going to be presented in the final editing cut of the show. There were a ton of cameras around filming everything you did and there is no doubt that they can make your team look any way they choose (as far as attitude/cheating/manipulating). I can't wait to see the show.

Here are a couple more pictures. One of the starts in the second show and the Honda loaded on our spare trailer, getting ready to take it home.

So, how much does the show pay to be in it? Is it enough to loose your car over? I never really thought that anyone really lost their car, just that it was a bunch of hype, guess I'm wrong. I wonder if I can still run 9's or 10's on DOT slicks or Drag Radials? Hmmm, got me wondering, nah, I'm not that much of a gambler.

Congratulations on the honda, bet you wish you had two of them, one to shat on and the other to cover it up with. Personally, I'd sell the honda as is for cash, let somebody else have that heap.

I've seen the show once and that was enough for me... it was kind of worthless in my opinion.

I thought it was probably a lie that you actually got the losing car. Glad to hear that debunked... particularly where you spanked that Honda!

Congrats on the win! Sell that sucker to some unassuming rice boy and buy some parts for that Firebird!

The show pays the owners nothing to be on the show. The "team" gets into the track for free and anyone who wants to watch pays to get in. As far as the end result of the cars... you decide what you want to do. The titles of the cars are signed before the race and held by Pinks. They are then given to the winner ...the winner can decide what he wants to do. You will see companies (speed shops usually) sponsoring the drivers and some are building cars just to be on the show. Think about it as advertising money. Our car had 2 shops names on it.

Yesterday Pinks shot the next 3 or so races at Atco in New Jersey and they tried to get us to run the Honda that was won at Atco. Jeff, the owner of the Trans Am had been in North Carolina alot and totally there over the past week getting the car ready at Carolina Auto Masters and his wife was already not real happy with him. We all have jobs and it would have been tough to make that happen on the spur of the moment.

On a personal note and some info on the Honda, there is no way I'd run a car that can do 140+ in the 1/4 that was in the condition that that car was in. It was stripped with nothing but the basic structure left, 1 seat, a steering wheel, a dash shell and a basic roll bar.. There were alot of bolts and things like tie downs for the brake lines missing on the car. I guess every nut and bolt adds to the weight. They ran it with stock axles and it was a gamble every run if the axles even lasted. The bumpers were held on by 2 little bolts and were removed by their team after the second race. We all signed the front bumper and it will be on the wall at Carolina Auto Masters.

Also here's a picture of the engine. I should have taken a picture of the huge turbo with just bent screen over the intake. Can you imagine trying to run a HybridZ with the 12" square by 1" thick radiator with 35 lbs of boost?

There was no disclosure contract and there were a ton of spectators. We did sign papers allowing Pinks to use the images filmed for the show or comercials with no pay etc...

8s? Guess again. I say it runs low-10s.

Meh rough math and fuzz memories I belive a 2000 lb car dose a 9 sec 1/4 with 550 horse..... and I think a Cobra that was built right weights like 1700 lbs......

Okay i just checked a FACTORY 67 Shely 427 AC Cobra is 2450... and I am sure that was with a steel frame.... give me a Alum. frame and some of the more modern things like a 351 Instead of a 427 (427 is 150 lbs on a 351) and a I know that 500 horse Cobra is running 9 flat. hell give me a AC289 those are like 2150 lbs with that silly steel frame.....

For whatever reason this post is REALLY troubling me....

The owner of the Turbo Civic looks like there is tidy sum of $$$ invested in that car. From the picture...the red valve cover is the B18C5...this is the Integra Type R engine...extremely sought after. The nicely crafted manifold, the external WG etc etc you can tell some big $$$ were spent on this car.

What is troubling me is that the loser of the race just walks away from a $10,000+ investment in his car? We are not talking a clapped out Escort here!! I could never NEVER do that, especially after the time and effort. I don't mind talking some smack and then even receive a humbling session, but to sign over my car to the person that just beat me....screw that bull$hitt. So what happens on the show, does the camera to the loser at the bus stop as they roll the credits?

I used to race alot on the street...ALOT....its the way I funded my car projects and I put the hurt down on alot of cars and at the same time my ego sometimes got the best of me and I would in return receive a demolishing.

But at the end of the night, we went home (after breakfast at 6am!!) and thought about how to make the car faster, there was never any talk of taking the opponent's car.

It would be OK, if on the show, you got to keep the loser's car, but Speed should at least give something to the owner...equivalent $$$ in Snap-Ons, a new project car for them to build and come back as a re-match or just plain outright cash.

My morals...I could never take the loser's car. But thats me. Beating them alone, is a good enough "shut-up!".
