Tell me about your metal head gasket...

I received mine today, and it looks fine, but if it was from e-bay and not from a reputable Nissan dealer, I wouldn't quite trust it. It came wrapped in nothing but a cardboard tray and plastic wrap for support (which did a fine job, BTW) but there is no Nissan part number sticker or any identifying mark on the package. The gasket itself is actually a multi-layer affair, and the layers are relativly loose, that is, away from the rivets they pull apart. Anyway, the thing looks perfect, just not quite what I expected, sound right to you guys ?

Dont worry about the rivets. I worked at an engine shop for a while who supplied the engines for the Panoz Esperante American Lemans race cars. Every metal headgasket we installed got the rivets drilled out and each layer was copper sprayed. No rivets were reinstalled.

Ebay hey? What did you pay for it? Where is the 2mm available I saw the one from Courtesy Nissan (Over $100) is that about standard?

Thanks

I said IF it WAS e-bay I wouldn't trust it, due to the lack of Nissan numbers and packaging. I bought it from Performance Nissan (mynismo.com) for I think $132, it was the best price I found out there.

Sounds just like what everyone else has, it is a 2mm, BTW. I'll have to remember the copper spray....

I have always used the copper spray... new or old. I have heard of peole using the mhg the first time with out copper spray, with mixed results. Some have sealed properly, most have leaked until they removed the head again and added the spray. You don't have to soak it either, just 2-3 light coats to change the color of the gasket from the black metal color to the shiny copper color, allow it to tack up for 10-15 minutes and bolt it on. It is cheap insurance for me as I do not want to pull the manifolds and head off more than once...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Austin and Mike...you need to copper spray those MH Gaskets!!! That will make a fundamental difference in the sealing of the gasket and provide a surface that can move just so in every direction during the rapid expansion and cooling cycles an engine goes through. Don't forget, without the copper spray, you have a MHG trying to seal a steel block to an aluminum head.

I have bought genuine NISMO gaskets and they come wrapped and packaged in the $hittiest way....but the gasket always were OK. Thankfully!!
