About the wankel sound. It sounded like a really long fart from a giant while idling and at low revs. As he left, he wound it up and it sounded good at hi rpm, but I couldn't live with a car that sounded like that at idle/cruise. It sounded awful to me. To each his own.

Pete - gotta give some leeway for wankel powered cars - no matter what, with anything but stock exhaust they'll sound like a weed whacker on crack.

My friend has an '89 GTUs (stripped of all luxuries) rx7 n/a. He put on new pipes since his old ones were shot to hell and rusting. These are aftermarket mazdaspeed? units, and they're loud. REAL LOUD. But at WOT, the sound clears up quite a bit and it sounds like a bike driving by smile.gif But it did help out with top end quite a bit

I myself used to be a rice rocket kid. I had an integra gsr and it was not fast but it would suprise some people. what I like about the hondas was a certain finese. being able to pull 170 hp out of a 110 cubic inch motor stock is pretty cool I think. I beat a friends 65 mustang that he had worked on quite a bit. I enjoyed just keeping up with a v8 when I only had an i4. I also liked being able to get 30 mpg and race when I felt so inclined. I considered getting a crx and doing an engine swap before I got my 240z. the crx weighs 1800lbs and with a good engine swap and turbo you can pull 400hp easily. it just depends on you point of view on the situation.

OK, I am a little confused here... I have owned

Z cars of every year model from 75-82...Last I checked the Datsun/Nissan was made in Japan. The cars were imported probabaly on the same ship that 300 tons of rice came in on.

Most of us dont class ourselves as a "RICER" because we dont use stickers for performance mods, nor do we think that a torch is the best way to lower a car for better handling. We also dont have much use for a formula 1 wing and body kit on a car that doesnt have enough power to top 110 MPH, But arent we still driving what many people would consider a "Rice Burner"???

I think there's a big difference between a "Rice Burner" (something with a Japanese engine) and a "Riced-out" car. You see "Riced-out" Japanese, German, American cars. It's an attitude, a way of modifying a car, and really has little to do with the make or origin of the car.

Well, in my opinion anyway.

ah the lines get so vague when 'rice' comes up..

when i think 'rice' i think of people doing things to their car to make them look like a different car or make it look like it's equiped with things it really isnt and prolly never will be equiped with.. Integras with Type-R stickers all over them and stuff like that.. NOS stickers on civics, mugen stickers on nissans.. all over the shop.. i've seen some hideous stuff on cars cause the owner thinks the sticker looks cool (usually not knowing what they are doing).. however a lot of the cars that people call rice cause they have 'different' paint jobs i dont agree with, same with big wheels and to a degree.. bigger exhausts.. but if someone is filling the inside of their hyundai excel with gauges, monster tachos and performance stickers.. its a bit silly..

i've seen lots of cars other people would call 'rice' and thought they looked really nice! As long as they aren't trying to be something they aren't and its a clean job of the asethetic stuff, then im cool with it, every man to himself!

Why not concentrate some energy on developing the next "rice" addition, and make yourself some money.

I hate riced out cars to, and we make fun of them all them time when we see them. I will never understand why someone would want to put a big wing on their car that can do nothing more than slow it down. Why would someone want a really loud exhaust? Don't you think your car looks really stupid with huge wheels on it in which the hubs are bigger than your brake rotors? I really hate stickers.

What I like are nice modifications that add to but don't over whelm the car. As Z owners, we are all blessed with cars that look good anyway, and most of the body kits make them look even better. I have seen some, however that you will never see on my car.

Hey if you want to spend your money that way, more power to ya.

I like understated whoop your ass power. I like it when people come up to me at the drag strip after I run a 12 second pass and go " I bet you clean up on the street, I would have never thought that car was fast".

Besides ricers distract the cops from us speed demons, at least over here in Bham they do.

I think Mike Kelly may have plans for something like that. :D I agree - there's alot of money to be made. Get a product developed, have it ready to sell lots of them, and make a pile of money. The problem is trying to think like a Ricer and coming up with the next killer product. I just can't think like that. It doesn't compute for me...

:D Now, that's a good side to the story!

Well, Len's and my definintion of "Rice" definitely don't agree - My opinion is that just because a car is made in Japan, that's not a sufficient nor necessary reason to call it RICE. I see totally stock non-riced Hondas everyday. I also see riced Chevrolets, Fords, VWs.

I'm with Arch. Tasteful mods are cool. And everyone's taste is different. But poser stuff, if followed by an attitude of "it's mine, it's modded (stickers, etc.), therefore everyone should think it's cool" doesn't necessarily wash for me. To each his own, but don't expect everyone else to think your ride is cool. Again, it's the ATTITUDE that sucks.

BTW, not all of us gray hairs from the 60s/70s had cars with air shocks with the rear end jacked to the moon, shag carpet, big tires in the rear and motorcylce tires on the front, etc - yesteryears trendy stuff... My high school car was a lowered 70 Camaro with wide radial tires all the way around on Corvette rally wheels, HD shocks, and of course a lumpy 327 under the hood to back up the image. Pro Touring before it's time, baby!

Scary...When it comes down to it. What you are doing is childish. What would compel you to waste paper saying "your car sucks" or whatever. It is pointless. I can understand that you don't like them because that is your opinion and that is fine. I dislike the cannon mufflers and how the ricers seem to rev it at every V8 that passes by. But the reason that they do it, is probably because they are intimidated by your car. I don't know about you, but that makes me feel good knowing that my car is the **** smile.gif Back to the point...I bet there are quite a few people that cannont stand the car you drive. But do they vandalize or leave obscene notes on your vehicle? Probably not. "Do unto others that you would like done unto you"

I tend to agree with pete. Being a "ricer" is more of an attitude than anything these days. I see plenty of imports that have a lot of wrench time in them, and it shows; but there is no way to tell by seeing the outside. Marking peoples cars with banners is bull, there is no way of judging a car without talking to the owner or seeing under the hood, inside, etc. I bash on rice all the time, but I keep an open mind. Most of the suspected "rice" owners that I know are actually pretty cool guys....eerrr girls in some cases (most are just ill-educated).... some even admit to having slow(er) rides and talk about getting real mods or different cars. Anyway, bash on rice all you want, but say it to their face instead of leaving some gay banner on there car.

Yeah, it amazes me how many people w/ riced out cars talk about how they're car is slow and how they want a faster one.

At least here in good old Fairbanks, AK I see just as many riced out trucks as I do cars. It seems like their is almost as many Probes, Cavaliers, and Escorts as their are Civics etc...

A few friends and I go out cruising and have the occasional race together, but we have pretty tasteful cars. Not far away from where we hang out there is a big group of ricers who hang out a car audio store. Some nights they have 20 or 30 cars there, which is a hell of a lot for where I live. It's kinda funny though. The "king" of the place is this kid I know w/ a 99 Z28 (the one I wrote about a couple months ago). All that he's done to it is a really ugly catback exhuast and two stupid stickers. They started this little club called, get this, "Team Deniro Auto Racing". They actually meant "dinero", but obviously didn't bother to check the spelling. So now a few of them have big stickers on there cars that say that. The other night I was talking to him, and I said "Robert Deniro is a good actor and all, but I wouldn't put his name on my car." He just looked at me like wtf? No one has bothered to tell him, because it's much funnier this way.
