Oh yeah, R180. Well that would be a problem if it was a 2 pinion. I suspect that it is the 4 pinion, just because the Nissan Comp catalog doesn't even offer the 2 pin anymore: http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CP&Category_Code=s30_nismo_r180ls

They should be able to open up the box and tell you if it has one crosspin or two. 2 minutes and you'd know for sure, that's not asking too much.

I called Reider Racing instead of Precision Gear and got the scoop on the PB:

LOM55 - R180 4 pinion - $498.95

LOM103 - R190 2 pinion - $549.95

LOM59-12 - R200 (12mm ring gear bolts) 4 pinion - $609.95

LOM59-10 - R200 (10mm ring gear bolts ) NLA

Wow the r180 four pinion seems like a steal. JohnC, i know you use or used to use a r180, any idea how much the four pinion can hold (hp or torque). I know it has been talked to death but i can never get a straight answer.

As Drax said, there is no straight answer. There are any number of folks (some on this board) that can blow up a R200 with a stock, 150hp, L6. And there are others that have had 2 pinion R180s last for years behind a 300hp small block Chevy.

IMHO, if not shock loaded, a R180 with a 4 pinion LSD installed can handle 250 ft. lbs. of torque. I ran around 275 ft. lbs. through my road racing R180s (with a Quaife diff installed) and never had a problem.

There are cases of much more power than that through a R180LSD as well.. I think it was SavageZ that was running a VG30ET with (I think) ~300ft-lbs for many hill climbs and racing events without any issues. It seems to me he had been running that setup for 5+ years without issue. Search it out, there was a post not so long ago about this topic that had his results in it.

  • 2 years later...

I just bought a 1987 300zx Turbo, and one of the receipts says the differential was replaced for 200.00.

I hope Whitehead's didn't take the CLSD out and put a VLSD in because they know whats up in there.

How can I make sure I still got the CLSD? I'm sure a cover swap would remove all suspicion

The VLSD would require the VLSD axles (which they would not do). The CLSD and the open diffs use the same axles. To check and see if you have an LSD, jack up the rear of the car, and turn one of the rear wheels by hand. If the other wheel moves the same direction, then you have an LSD, if it moves opposite, then you have an open diff.
