Lewis Maudlin
If you search carefully, you can find a decent replacement steering rack for a reasonable price. It is a lot cheaper than rebuilding. I think I bought my complete steering rack for less than two inner tie rod ends.

blueovalz
Is there a pin that must be removed and then the caps (sockets) unscrew off the rack ends?
dj paul
ya, i took em off. its like the just wont budge at all, im beginning to wonder why they even needed to put fastners on there in the first place.
dj paul
oh, and that bellow wasn't what i was talking about. i do however appreciate that your trying to help. im talking about the one thats right at the end of the tie rod. know that little mushy ball? VB doesnt sell this piece by itself, they only sell the tie rod assembly for about 150.

Warren
Sorry about that...what you need is a TIE ROD END BOOT. CLICK HERE They're special order through the stores, but you can find them at some other auto parts stores locally as well as summit racing. Hope this helps. heavy85
I got some generic 5/8" ones (I think may want to measure as they had two sizes) off the rack at Advance Auto. They were like $4 for a pair. My tie rods were tight just the boot was gone. Cameron

tec280zx
I used a jackstand to hold up the steering knuckle then a 4lbs sledgehammer to knock out the tie rod end. Altough don't hit the part with the threads, I hit on the arm just before it the knuckle. Usually a few taps and its free.

J__
if ur goin to replace the tierod also then the sledgehammer way works well. but if not, u MIGHT run a risk of messing it up with a sledge hammer. up here in canada we can borrow automotive tools from canadian tire. whne you borrow it, u pay the full price of the tool. then when u return it, they give u all the money back = free use of tools. not bad eh. i went to ca tire and borrowed their balljoint tierod puller. pretty much looks like a jaw like clamp and a long bolt in the middle. u just anchor the clamp and turn the bolt. the bolt slowly presses the tierod out. it wont budge until eventually u hear a loud gunshot and get the crap scared outta u. then voila. done. no damage, no sweat, and no broken bones or suspension parts. takes like 30 seconds. i would invest the time to go find the proper tools. dj paul
J fantastic advice man. that made it sooo easy. i would have definately bent the tie rod with the kind of force needed to seperate those.
