Phantom
Well, it's pretty much official. I'm accepting a new position with another company that will have me moving out of the great state of Texas. I will know tomorrow exactly which offer I'll be accepting of the three I've received - ain't it great to have choices?!? Heavily mixed emotions as I'm so very happy about certain aspect that I'll be leaving behind but sad at knowing that my wife an I will be separating from our kids, and grand kids, for the first time in 31 years. Current employer may march me out the door the instant I turn in my resignation as the lead contender at this point is a competitor. We'll see how it all plays out. Needless to say I'm going to be very busy for the next couple months cleaning up loose ends here, selling the house, and getting settled in the new area. Speaking of the house - anyone in the DFW area interested in a really nice home in Arlington? I can tell you that you'd be paying less for it than I have in it in original purchase price and upgrades - by about $60,000!
Mike kZ
Maybe your current employer will out bid your new one
rags
It sounds like you must have received a few pretty good offers and I'm happy for you. What are the states that your looking at? Maybe other members could give you some info about the new locations. What are ya asking for the house? Maybe I'll get off my @ss and relocate myself! Phantom
Geez guys - thanks for the fairwells. I really appreciate it. I've been hunting for about 8 months now and it's been a pretty difficult search because of my specific background and the tremendous amount of experience I have in that area. I received three offers - one in Pennsylvania, one in Wisconsin, and one in Washington state. The third one finally came in tonight and it now looks like the ol' resignation will be getting submitted late this Friday with two weeks notice. The best offer turned out to be in Yakima, Washington. Not a place that some people would like but it is very similar in many ways to where I grew up in Boise, Idaho. Very dry, with very warm summers but it generally drops to the 60's at night even when 95° during the day and not too frigid winters, The job is good with good pay, a bonus program, and an outstanding relocation package. The cost of living in Yakima seems to be the same or possibly slightly less than here in the DFW area so the pay increase will be a real one - other than the fact that I'll once again have a mortgage which is a bummer. I'd paid off the house here in Arlington about a year ago. Mike KZ - It will be interesting to see if they try. I've been with my current company 23 years and have been istrumental in its solid growth over that time - We're about 10 times larger than we were in 1983. About 7-8 years ago they put a real MBI (Management By Intimindation) type in as my boss - partly because he has a serious lip lock on the owners behind and partly because he knows where too many of the skeletons are buried. I complained about harassment and asked to be moved 10 months ago and was basically ignored and told that I "needed to do what I needed to do" so I think I know what reaction to expect - even though I am going to work for a company that is a major competitor. I expect to get marched out the door within 30 minutes of them finding out who. As long as they pay me through the end of my notice I won't mind the extra two weks of vacation. dr_hunt
Funny how they have no sense of humor. I was working at an engineering firm doing civil, wanted to do environmental/water/wastewater, so I found another job on my own time which offered a 10K/year raise. Dingdong secretary at the new place faxed the offer letter to my work. The HR woman (witch) sauntered into my office and threw the fax at me and told me "You'd better accept this offer", minutes later I was in the big bosses (Pres) office where he "fired" me. LOL! Minutes after that I was escorted to my office to clean out my desk and then escorted to the door!
Pop N Wood
You don't need to tell them who you are going to work for. Seriously. Might be more entertaining that way. Just tell them you want some time off to explore your inner self. Tell them that you wish to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life. And to not, when it came time to die, discover that you had not lived. Or just get good a liquored up and tell them to pound sand.
Phantom
Well, resignation is in. Start with the new company on October 16th. Looks like I'm going to moving to Yakima sometime in November.
Pop N Wood
Did they walk you out the door or try and sweet talk you?
Phantom
Neither - 3 1/2 hours after I submitted my resignation my boss came in, wished me luck with my new position and told me I would work out my notice. I do think it's appropriate, however, that my last day will be Friday the 13th. With the 23 years of knowledge I'm walking out the door with it won't bode well for the company for a while. Two of my guys have already asked me for pointers on resumes & job hunting.
Robin
Yakima! welcome to this city! It will be good to see another Z in town. If you have questions or whatever give me a hollar.
Phantom
OUTSTANDING!! Finally - someone actually from Yakima pops up. I'm going to have a bundle of questions over the next few weeks. I'll actually be arriving up there mid-November but need to get started on knowing the best residential areas. I also need some lines on the best automotive shops etc. It's going to take folks with some talent and integrity to wrench on my babies. PM coming your way. Robin
LOL.... right on! Have you been up here yet for a look around? Its a pretty small town, be prepared for a couple months of culture shock . But all in all is a nice place to live, lotsa choices for places to take up residence. Talk to ya soon.
Phantom
Dang. You are either up really early or you work at night!
Mikelly
This is a good example of stupid corporate decisions on management personnel, and what happens when you don't take care of your people... Good luck in Washinton and hopefully your decision to leave will open their eyes... Mike
Phantom
MiKelly, Nope - didn't happen. I'm seeing the same short-sighted reactive activiteis going on that I've seen before. On the bright side everything is nothing but positive for the future. Would have liked to make this move years ago but the timing/economy just wasn't right. BlackBeaut
Dang, I can't believe you're not a dyed in the wool Texan Bill!! You've destroyed my image of you driving your Zed, with a couple of migrant workers hanging off the steer horns mounted on the hood and you wearing a Stetson so big you have to open both door windows for it to fit, whilst (of course) barbequing some 1/2 ton T-bones in a cunning propane (and propane accessories) oven fitted in the spare wheel well!! Good luck with the new job/life of course, I'm sure you'll be having fun up there before you know it! Cheers, Rob
wheelman
Phantom, Welcome to the NorthWest, I'm sure you'll like it here. I know there are a couple Z guys here in the Tri-Cities, WAGZ being one, but I haven't met any of them yet. Maybe it's time to call an Eastern WA HybridZ get together so we can all look over each other's rides and have a beer or two. We should try to plan something for early spring I guess, the winters up here can be unpredictable and my Z doesn't see daylight until March or April depending, besides it still looks like a rolling disaster and I'll have more time to make it presentable. Congrats on the new job, sorry you were forced into making the change. I've been through a similar situation and it really sucks.
