jnjdragracing
hey guy's, Finally found my problem with the engine. Bad MSD ignition box. Jerry and I took the car to a local track last night and it was awsome. Felt good to see it run like it is supposed too. Posted alot of new video footage at www.jnjdragracing.com Note: right click on thumbnail and save as. Did some inside filming as well thanks to my brother Jerry who mounted his video camera inside the car. Awsome footage must see what it looks like inside the car with the wheels lifting up. Jerry got the idea from ZGad's footage. Jerry driving and if you listen closely you can hear him yelling and having a good time. Like " This is what its all about " and " Rip where are you now " etc. Any way come take a look. However new issue arrised, have a bad bearing or something in the blower, have to take off and apart to see what is going on. Oh well at least the other issues are behind us. 60 foot imes were a 1.35, consistent. CV joints held up to some awsome abuse last night. deja
Way to go guys. Glad it turned out to be something relatively easy instead of tearing that monster engine down again.

jnjdragracing
Are those are the 280ZXT CV's? No, they are the 300ZXT CV's, we changed to this setup in August 2006. Before we were running the stock halftshafts. The CV's seam to be holding up Great.Jerry
rytherwr
You GO John...! Sure sounds like it's fixed! Glad you were able to suss it out. How did you come to the conclusion it was the box? Just put my 4500 stall converter in today but will have to wait until friday to test it out on the track. hope to be well into the 6's in the 8th. jnjdragracing
Hello Wayne, Well not long ago I installed an alternator. Since then problems occured, battery not lasting like it should. Took the alternator off when we rebiulded the engine. I think it overcharged my system and messed up the MSD unit. Just in case I did replace the dizzy, coil, plugs, even the rpm chips. John After over 40 years in the computer world I have learned several things about electronics. A fuse never just "wears out", a good ground is not just a good idea but mandatory and an electrical device rarely dies alone. As far as diagnosis goes always ask "What was the last thing you did before the problem started?"
jnjdragracing
Pulled the blower off and took apart. Seems like the seals are leaking, all the gear oil was gone. Time to send off and get it freshened up. Get new bearings, seals, and have the rotors re-stripped. John
v80z
Great Job JNJ. BTW. Thiose video files are huge!! Can you convert them toa WMV format so that they wont be so big?
jnjdragracing
The real big one is the 1st inside view, I did not edit it. I thought some people would like to see the whole thing from start to return. I did try more compression on the inside videos but it distorted the sound and I wanted to keep it as real as possible. I will try and do better next time. John
veritech-z
Once you got these out of the gas tank, I bet it helped a lot too: For some reason, I can't find the videos on the website, and the direct links you posted don't seem to be working for me either... Drax240z
hey guy's, Finally found my problem with the engine. Bad MSD ignition box. John Let me start by saying I've had an MSD box in my Z for 5 years now, no problems at all. But in the past ~1 year I've had no less than 5 MSD box's be the cause of problems with cars coming through my shop and running on my dyno. I'd never, ever buy one again because of that. Best I can tell those that are 2+ years old seem to be much more reliable than the newer ones. Just FYI for anyone looking at an ignition box. The Mallory, Jacobs, Crane, etc. boxes all seem to be fine.
jnjdragracing
thanks for the info. never had a real problem with msd, my old box was a 6400 msd, had it for years and years. probably will send it off to be gone through.
