stagefumer11
Im doing my l28e Rebuild into a l28et and im trying to decided which gearbox to use. my donar car is a 70 s130 280z. L28e factory manual. Low k's also. The new build will be going into my 1985 R30 skyline with a l20et, Manual also. Im at the point as i dont know which would be a better gearbox to use. I find the l20et box has close ratios with 1st 2nd 3rd. And cruse at 100kmph at 3200rpm. (3.9diff) Now i havnt driven the donar 280z as it wasnt running when i got it. (motor is being rebuilt) I dont know what the ratios are like on that box. Or which would be better suited for the torque and power curves that a l28et delivers
JMortensen
The general consensus is that wide ratios and a tall geared rear end is best for boosted applications. NA likes close ratios and lower rear gears.
stagefumer11
any ideas on what has the longer ratios ? What rpm does a l28e box sit at at 60mph ? 3000 ? 3200 ? ect. The l20et box has done over 400,00k, so im not really keen on using it for to much longer untill its rebuilt
JMortensen
rpms at speeds requires that you know rear end gear ratios, trans ratios, and tire size. This calculator might help you out: http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/
stagefumer11
wow great thanks for the link. Looks like ill use my r200 3.9 diff out of the skyline for now. with the 79 280z box. will give me 2800rpm at 100k. Then weld the 280 r200
260DET
........... Then weld the 280 r200 Why would you do that? Not a serious option compared with a clutch or Torsen type LSD.
Alex_V
O RLY? for 0-$50 you can have a 100% locked diff, or 300-700 new/used for a V or C LSD? good option if you want it locked right now and save up for a good LSD. Like Im doing with my drift S13. ~Alex
stagefumer11
i wish the options for Any lsd to fit a Z'd or the r30 is pretty limited and rare here. A long nose lsd from say a hr31, Crappy 4.11 ratio + will easly set anyone back here over $800. Most ive seen got for around $1200
NZeder
Re the LSD long nose thing - well I might have a few options for you now or in the future. The now - I could sell you a locked spool that you install in the center to lock the two axles together PM me your email address and I will send to a pic and price. The future - Once I get my new LSD (Torsen) setup I will be removing my R200 longnose 3.9 CLSD and putting that up for sale (to get some of the $$ back on the Torsen unit)
NZeder
Sorry - locked spool gone already a Zed racer here in NZ is interested in it.

NZeder
whooa quick. lol Never got a chance to read that. What did it go for in the end ? What I paid for it years ago - so it will now be in the V8 powered 240z that races in Super GT's. I have know Greg for years and he usually runs welded diffs he had one CLSD but that was busted on the new Taupo track - very tight and with 500ft/p and 500ish HP it just tore the cage apart.
