MaTTSuN
mine is loud like i can almost not hear my exaust which is a 3inch with a dynomax straight threw design. Now the sound of mine is like a wooshing well you all know. is that normal? Matt
z_cars_rule
mine is really loud too, mainly in my case due to a small 'step' in the intake just before the blades that causes alot of turbulence. depending on where you a listening from, from the front, the intake is louder, from behind the exhaust is really loud (3inch straight thru)
BayAreaZT
Thats normal. I'm running the same exhaust setup and you can really hear the turbo when you're in the car.
MaTTSuN
i have that "step" too goes from 3inch intake to 2 1/2 to the turbo then 2 1/2 to 3 inch off the turbo. the turbo seam louder since i took the greddy style bov off now its a loud wooshing all the time. with the BOV a didnt even get the cool whistle i was looking for maybe i need a diff BOV thats what cheep a$$ ebay stuff does for you i guess
alexideways
Mine is very, very quiet cause it sits on a shelf for now LOL
nienberg.11
I can almost never hear the whistle from my turbo, but I have a glasspack inline with a muffler. Even when the external gate opens you only hear a faint hooting.
MaTTSuN
interesting i wonder if something is wrong or it just likes to be loud its the stock T3 hmm
nienberg.11
I doubt anything is wrong with it. It's probably the piping around the turbo that makes the difference. When I was running the stock t3 with only a downpipe, I could hear every last whistle from the thing, even at idle.
MaTTSuN
yeah i can hear it at idle and everything else can hear it threw the exaust 2 that really cool haha so i guess an intercooler quiets it down a bit?
sweetleaf
You should have a blowoff/bypass valve. Otherwise the sound you hear is the air beaing forced backwards, when you close the throttle plate. Causing breaking on the turbine = Not good for the turbo.. proxlamus©
um the turbocharger does not go backwards... it simply slows down.. only in SEVERE cases with extremly high RPM levels and very high boost levels the turbo surge will be intense enough to bend or break the blades. But it will not go backwards
MusPuppis
Our Festiva's little IHI SCREAMS over the 3inch DP (dumping to nothing.. no exhuast ATM) when you rev the car. Its not even in gear, building no boost and sounds like the world is coming to an end, I.. LOVE.. IT..

May not bend or break blades at modest boost levels but it will cause exsessive wear on the bearings/bushings.
nienberg.11
We weren't talking about surge or debating the value of BOVs until your post, sweetleaf. This thread is about the level of exhaust noise on turbocharged cars.
sweetleaf
Really it was about how loud is your turbo. I only added the coment about the BOV after someone said their turbo was making a louder whooshing sound after the removed the BOV. With lots of piping and intercooler the surge can lessen the life of your turbo. Was only trying to add some tech for people that might not know. nienberg.11
I hadn't read that post very thoroughly until now. I see what you're talking about. Mattsun, when you say that you removed your greddy bov, what did you do then? Did you block off the hole in the intake track, or put another bov in its place? HadesOmega
yeah mine is pretty loud too I took her out for a drive yesterday after I finished up my flares and boost controller install and noticed I can hear it over my exhuast, I got a 2/12 inch exhuast. Its louder than the t3/t4 that's on my eclipse
