z-ya
I've rebuild a number of F54 and N42 blocks, but don't remember seeing this hole near the rear main cap. It is not all the way through. This engine was running great when I pulled it. It also has over 180K miles with the original bore and bearings.
JMortensen
I think it's just a bad bit of casting, don't think it will hurt anything if removed now. If left in it could break off and that wouldn't be a good thing.
z-ya
Its more than just some stray casting material, it is a hole. Hear is a higher resolution image: http://www.zccne.org/gallery/albums/clubcar2006/P1010007_001.jpg
JMortensen
That's a little different from what I thought I was looking at before. No clue as to whether it's going to affect anything. It would make me nervous though...
z-ya
I was planning on using this block for a 400+HP turbo build-up. I think I'll look for another block.

martin6306
I am preping a F-54 block as we speak and it has the same hole in the same place, it is not a faulty casting hole. I was cast there on purpose. I don't know the purpose however as it doesn't seem to lead anywhere. Dave Martin
z-ya
Thanks Dave. Maybe I'll use this block after all.
Tony D
Isn't that the oil drainback hole from the rear of the head? There is a drilled hole in the back of the head, under the last cam tower, and a matching hole in the block deck...as I recalled it dumped near the rear main cap down in the crankcase. Stick a wire coathangar through it, and see where it pops up, I'm thinking that is where the hole goes. I would deburr it, and the surrounding area, and if it's real anal time, maybe install a little deflector on it to allow the oil drainback to drain to the oil pan without impinging on the crank or crank throw winding around in that area. z-ya
I think your right Tony. I'll check this weekend. It just looks like more of a mistake, than a return hole. Yea, I plan on cleaning up the entire interior of the block.
