Update on my Sister-inlaw...

Just got back from the hospital. Donna has been moved to her own private room on the 6th floor. She's no longer on a ventalator, and she can speak and is doing much better. There's serious hope for her, as she is regaining some sense of feel in her legs... This may just be something that comes and goes, or it may well lead to her being able to one day walk again. I almost was reduced to tears when talking with her for the first time since the accident happened. I told her that we'd do whatever we can to help get her back up and on her feet again. I also told her about the time I broke my pelvic and couldn't feel my own legs, back when I was 16. This raised her spirits and gave her hope that did my heart good... I also told her about you guys and this thread, and the others on the various car boards I post on. She again raised her spirits and was ear to ear with a smile. Thanks gang for keeping her in the prayor lists and for thinking of Donna and the family...

Sorry Gang, I was out of town last week and playing catch up this week.

We've spent time over the last three day weekend starting the modification of the home Donna and her Husband *(My sister's brother, Ricky) live in. The walls, door ways, bedroom, and master bath have to be significantly modified, and that's what's been going on. Monday we were re-framing the walls for the hallway, and doorways, and re-sheetrocking them. My other brother inlaw, Ricky's brother Mike has taken the next several weeks off from work, and will be running this operation...

The interesting thing is that we have to pay for this out of pocket, and then at some point later the insurance company will reemburse the family for the expenses, as long as the mods were done and inspected, and passed to ADA specifications.

I'll be working with the family on this as much as I can over the next 10 days or so. Donna is doing well in physical therapy and coming along well. She moved out of UVA about 3 weeks ago and is now in a rehab facility in Charlottesville Va. She gets hotspots, sometimes gets feeling in portions of her legs, and sometimes has her feet move without trying.... We're not sure if she'll ever walk again, but the prognosis is good and her spirit and determination is high and strong!

Latest on the insurance company debacle is that they are finally realizing the significance of their liability. The trucker was traveling 51MPH in a 45mph zone when she started braking for impact, approximately 75ft. before impact with Donna's car. To leverage their losses, they've decided to go after the manufacturer of the car seat (I believe that's adelphi or another subcontractor to GM) to blame them for Donna's extensive injuries, since the seat collapsed back when the impact occured. Gee, I guess that wouldn't have had anything to do with an 18 wheeler hitting her from behind at speeds above 40MPH!

More to come!

Mike
