Pics of my Rustoleum Paint Job

Recommended Posts

I spent all last night reading the post on the guy that painted his charger with roller and some paint similar to rustoleum. Being the wtf kinda guy I am I thought I would try it on my Z. Plus being short on money is a big factor...:)

I preped the car as normal with my body work and primer. I wet sanded the car then took the instructions from the other post and wiped the car down with 100% mineral spirits and tacked it off. It is 7:24PM here now and I just finished the first coat. Here are some before and after pics.

This is just the first coat and I haven't wet sanded. Hopefully tomorrow I will wet sand and put another coat on. I will post more pics tomorrow night. From what I've seen so far I think this is going to be great.

I updated the photo link with some pics after the 1st wet sand and re-coat. I am using gloss black and thinning with acetone. I am also using Jap-dry to speed paint set-up. So far the paint is working outstanding and seems to be very hard this morning.....:) It stood the fingernail test. I will update later.

I finished up putting on the last two coats of paint. I love to paint, but the wet sanding sucks...fripper.gif

My mixture is about 2 or 3 to 1 acetone to paint. I made it really thin and with the dryer added it seems to really bring out the shine. I am using a Cornwell gravity feed HVLP gun at about 25lbs. The pressure a little high for the gun, but I really got a good flow.

I added a few more pics. The last one is a test section after I sanded with 2000 grit and polished with the compound and wax. I think it is going to turn out great, but I've had enough for today. I really need to find me an electric buffer..unibrow.gif

i dont get how mine didnt come out like this ....im guessing its because i didnt use this type of paint gun

I think it is more in the thinning of the paint than the type of spray gun. Use lower pressure and really thin paint. I sprayed a tack coat, let it flash then immediately came back with a slightly heavier coat. Today I have to try a buffer to rent somewhere....:)

do you have a moisture trap on your air line? moisture in the paint will make it turn orangey-peel like.

I sprayed a pathfinder with factory black paint, and it came out a bit peel-like... but to be honest, it suits the pathfinders rugged shaped.

I spent all day on one side of the car....:fmad: I can't seem to get the rear quarter sanded to suit me. I'll pick it up again tomorrow, had all I can take of it today.

you seem to be sanding with your finger tips. have you tried using a flexible sanding block?

your correct, I have been just hand sanding. I will try a block sander and see what happens.

good idea. I noticed the finger scribe marks right away. you should always use a sanding block. if you don't use a flat surface to sand onto a flat surface, you can see it right away... and if you plan on making it look as good as possible with rustoleum, make sure you stay away from using your hands.

it still looks like it's coming out very nice, and even with the hand scribes, id bet it'd be a kick ass paint job for under 100 bucks.
