MJLamberson
So I was putting my suspension on my car today (struts and springs) and one of the nuts that threads on to the top of the strut stripped and will not come off no matter what I do, so the rubber part with the bearing in it is stuck... Obvously I need to remove this to get the strut and spring off but I cannot... To further clarify this rubber piece has three studs coming off the top and go through the shock tower to mount it. They look like and are in this location http://www.offroaders.com/album/clearfield/clear_05182007/images/RH/Img_4947.jpg I am going to the pick n pull tomorow to try to find another one. My question is this... if I cant find this piece on an s30 will an s130 version work? Any other cars that have the same part? I need to get my Z (DD) back on the road asap thanks -Michael
ihavearustedz
I know exactly what your talking about. I believe its called a top hat. If im not mistaken the rears are different in 240z vs. 280z. 280z are taller. As for knowing if any others fit I have no clue. Good Luck. Thanks for the tip but there is no way this is going to come off, I did try that to no avail, and believe me I tried hard... Eventualy I just gave in and tried splitting the nut, but once I got it split the rubber piece STILL WOULDNT BUDGE!!!!!! grrrrr If you need a replacement, ive got a pair I could drop off at the post office tomorrow (wed) they are off a 75. Thanks a bunch, I will let you know tomorrow when I get back from the pick n pull, shipping would take longer then preferable, My Z is my only car... If I cant find one I will let you know. -Michael
Administrators BRAAP Posted March 19, 2008 Administrators Share Posted March 19, 2008 Lamm, Thought I'd help out as you seem to have forgotten HybridZ rule #3.
MJLamberson
Lamm,Thought I'd help out as you seem to have forgotten HybridZ rule #3. My apologies, How about something along the lines of "are these suspension parts interchangable"? My question isnt how to get a nut off, I gave up on that, but if I can use a particular s130 part on an s30. Thanks
rturbo 930
It won't interchange. I compared my S30 and S130 a while ago and it's very clear they won't interchange. Edit: I think I misunderstood what part you're talking about. I was referring to the rubber piece that bolts to the car.
hughdogz
Hi MJ, I believe the nut that holds the strut in the tube is called a "gland nut". Have you tried using a pipe wrench to remove it yet? First give it a good spray with some liquid wrench or some other penetrant. Then lay the strut on the ground and hold it down with your foot and use a ~24" (at least) pipe wrench. I would be really surprised if you cannot remove it using this technique. Maybe you already tried this though... HTH, -hughdogz [Edit: vvv John is right. Sorry...Forget what I said! ]
johnc
I think he's talking about the nut holding the factory spring isolator on top of the shock. If you're planning on relacing the shock and the spring, just take a cutting torch to the spring in a few places until the tension is released. Then cut the shock shaft. MJLamberson
well I was talking about the rubber piece... But I got one at the pnp today, only to realize that the bearing that goes in the rubber piece on mine was ruined, and they had none at the pick n pull... So I have the rubber thing, and I just ordered the bearing from Kragen... 3 day wait... Im going to miss my Z for the next three days. at least it will be ready for the meet on the 29th! on a side note, I borrowed a 94 ford escort 5 speed to go to the pnp, that thing is so slow its unsafe!!! (no joke, shift at 5 grand on every gear and it will take you 5 min to hit 90) And to clarify further, the nut, which is now long gone wasnt stuck persay. It would spin around when you took a wrench to it, but it wouldnt go anywhere... And yes, I was holding the strut still. AHHHH... 3 days without my Z! Without any car for that matter thanks for the help guys, issue resolved... but Im still wondering if the bearings match up... To late now though
BobbyZ
My bearings had the same problem. On mine the bearing was originally put in crooked and years of the suspension banging on it had jammed it in sideways. Eventually I am going to have to replace the entire assembly. For now I just left the bearing in there frozen, probably not a good idea
