Super victor and stock hood

I posted this in my project page but i'd like to get some additional input.

I searched and didn't really see anyone with a super victor intake under the stock hood. I thought I'd share that it does fit.

 

My car is using the JTR mounts and jtr frame spacers.

The real limitation is the air cleaner that will fit.

I am currently using a Mr gasket filter part# 1486.

I am actually just using the filter directly on the carb without the base plate.

Its a 6.5" filter with ~5.25" inner diameter. It is 1.5" tall.

 

Clearance to the hood is ~.25" with filter installed

The real question is how much do you think a filter of this size is restricting? Would I see much of a power increase from a larger filter etc.

 

I think I read an article in car craft that did a comparison of filters and the conclusion was that the size didn't really effect horsepower by more than 2-4 if any. With that said, this filter is slightly smaller than any of the ones tested and is also not the k&n brand that they tested.

 

I am currently debating on whether or not the cost of changing to a larger filter is worth the added expense of either a cowl induction hood or a scoop added on my current fiberglass hood.

I wonder if they make a drop base bottom 5.25... I havnt seen one. I wonder if a drop base 14'' would work for you. i dont know, because it would extend about 5 inches further towards the front of the car, as well as drop down...

the Carb has a 5 1/8" opening. The filter is slightly larger on the inside but seals to the top of the carb fine.

 

I actually tried a drop base already and it does put the tallest point too far forward and it hits the hood considerably. I think I might have tried that with a 4" tall filter though. Either way with the 1.25" drop base and the 4" filter, it held the hood up about 2 inches if I remember right. Might be able to get a 2 filter with the same drop base on it... not sure.

 

An oval filter may work, but it wouldn't be much larger than what i currently have.

 

The downward slope in the hood is killing me.

You can get a short 14" round filter element from Summit or Jegs. I think 1",2",3",4" are all available.

K&N offers an open top filter lid in a 14" dia. That should allow plenty of airflow into the carby.

You have to consider that the choke horn will come very close to the aicleaner lid. That will cause the air to make a very tight 90degree turn and obstruct flow to the primaries. For this reason I would suggest an open top element like the K&N one.

ID POINT OUT that your NOT limited to the standard round air cleaners, and that this is another case where owning a decent welder, or careful shopping for less comon air cleaner designs makes the solutution very simple.

but theres NO reason you can,t fabricate a custom air/box with a remote filter location or visit a salvage yard and get the vast majority of the parts for a remote air filter location set up from a EFI equiped car and connect it to an air/box on the carb with 4" tubeing

Don't they say that a longer intake increases net torque?

 

Or at least an airbox setup...

 

I think your just a bit confused, a longer intake runner in th e intake manifold, between the head and plenum,( PROVIDED the cam and compression MATCH tends to increase torque) not the intake air filter length track

Thats exactly what I have been looking into. I do have access to a welder and such. I have just been going back and forth as to whether I feel like doing the glass work on the hood to mold in a scoop or /cut/weld/fabricate. Basically I need to get off my @$$ and just do something.

 

Thanks you for the links. It definitely opens some options up.

 

The current filter is absolutely a temporary solution as to get the car on the road. I knew y'all would have some good ideas.

And it will flow alot more air than that small filter you have now.

Well as far as I can tell I have about ~2" of clearance from the front of carb flange. The issue I run into is that the hood really starts to slope around the area in front of the carb.

 

The other issue I have is if I change to a drop base like that, I may have to change my throttle setup as well as move the pressure regulator/gauge on the passenger side of the carb. I'll try and reach up from underneath the car to take a pic to show the clearance i have and hopefully that will shed some light on the situation.

 

Its looking more and more like I am gonna have to fab something up or find something like grumpy said about an remote air filter set up from a efi car. Or at least that is what I am currently leaning towards at this point.

many of the current efi cars & trucks have remote mount filter boxes with large rectangular drop in pleated replacement filters that can be mounted in several locations, its a basic no brainer to carefully measure and weld up an air box to bolt over the carb and run a 3" or 3.5", 4" connector hose between the two, with some careful thought the filter housing can be located where iot has dirrect access to cool air, and your not limited to locations dirrectly adjacent to the engine. salvage yards almost give those parts away, I doubt the cost will exceed $25 for the filter housing and a few other components

Hmmm…. Using FFMarc’s induction idea pictured below, (pic courtesy of Summit Racing), mount it facing backwards and plumb it through the firewall into the upper cowl region with the filters under the cowl, (not sure how much room there is for that big of filter ?!?!)

Cold air intake from the high pressure zone just under the windshield. Down side, (or upside depending on your point of view), is the induction noise, (WHAAAAHT) will be more audible in the cabin at WOT. Personally, I prefer to hear the induction noise over the exhaust noise. Sends chills down the spine.

Oooo.... I like that idea. That would take care of the issue with the hood sloping down. I wonder how tall it is. Now I have to decide if I need carpet more than I need this air intake setup. Decisions... decisions....:cool:

 

That at least give me an idea of something to fabricate as well.
