Subaru WRX STi R180 Side Axles

s any rust prevention needed? I didn't know if the metal used had any chrome added to the alloy or not.

 

The alloy is 4340 which has .7 to .9% Chrome. That's not really enough to make it corrosion resistant but the shaft itself is inside the diff and gets gear oil on it. Don't paint the shaft but you can paint the flange if you want.

My new output shafts arrived the other day :) :)

They look good!, just like the pictures in a previous post.

We're not quite ready to do the install, but I did fit one.

It fits like a glove!

Awesome work John and datrod!

 

When we get to the job of installing this unit, I will take some pictures and write up something. I'm sure it will be as straight-forward as it seems.

On the bolts ... as stated earlier the existing bolts need to be reused and they're a pain to remove. Mine were seized up rather well. I soaked them with releasing oil and then I found heating the original flange and then adding a nut to the bolt (not all the way in) and then gently tapping with a brass hammer worked best. I managed to get 10 good ones (out of 12). I then glass beaded them and buffed them to polish them up.

Just remember ratios and LSD type differ depending on the year (which may affect pricing):

 

3.9 ratio:

2004, 2005, 2008

 

3.54 ratio:

2006, 2007

 

CLSD:

2004, 2005, 2006

 

Torsen LSD:

2007, 2008

 

*** Question - soo I found a source for a 2006 CLSD and a 2007 Torsen LSD... looks like both have a 3.54 differential... I've done some research and I'm having a hard time trying to decide which is a better choice.

 

Soo.. which would you guys recommend.. Torsen or Clutch type?!

john, just wanted to know if a batch of these will ever be available again, or was that a one-time only thing?

 

I have to do them in minimum quantities of 20 (10 sets) to make the price what it is. I will generally wait until I think I can sell 10 sets before I'll ask John Williams to make a production run. I do have one set left after Alan purchased the set I mentioned above. A customer backed out due to funding issues.

Has anyone looked into using a set of metal STi diff axle seals on John's stubs to help keep the grit out?

Subaru calls the part a "baffle", Subaru PN 23233GA091 around $6 each. I'm planning to try them.

 

Subaru Part #s that might be helpful to folks using the STi R180s:

Genuine Subaru STi LSD oil PN K0305Y0900 ($18-25 a liter!) Perrin finned cover #PSP-SUS-510 will incr capacity to 1.3qts.

Others use Motul 90PA or Motul 300 if a Torsen unit.

R180 rear cover gasket PN 38353AA050 (about $10)

R180 STi stub snap ring PN 805326000 (lives inside diff) (about $2.50 ea)

R180 rear cover plastic breather vent PN 38354AA002 (about $4)

R180 STi diff rubber side seal PN 806732030 or 806732200 (about $6 ea)

You can also tap the rear cover vent hole 1/4NPT for a -6 AN fitting if you want to run a hose to a vent or a catch can.

 

Torque values for the STi R180s:

Driveshaft Pinion flange nut torque spec is 134 lb-ft. This preserves pinion bearing pre-load.

Diff side plate bolt torque spec is 7.6 lb-ft.

Rear cover bolt torque spec is 32 lb-ft (22 lb-ft for Non-STi and Perrin recs this tq # with their finned covers).

Fill/drain plug torque spec is 36 lb-ft (Use the $30 13mm KTC Socket to avoid rounding out these plugs: http://ultimatetoolco.com/drainplugs.aspx).

Rear diff mounting bolts torque spec is 52 lb-ft. (Ditch the studs & replace w/ 12x1.75 gr 10.9 bolts to make R&R easier)

Although possibly NLA at times, these part #s might be useful:

Nissan halfshaft bolts PN 39628-E4100

Nissan halfshaft nuts PN 39627-N3000

Nissan halfshaft washers PN 08915-2401A

Nissan halfshaft bolts PN 38228-21000 (Thanks Dtsnlvrs!)

(Torque to 58 lb-ft)

 

The Sti R180 install under my VG30ET-powered 510 will be much like Dtsnlvrs, as I'm also using the WCR CV axles. I hadn't intended to safety wire the bolts, but maybe now I will. I have a brand new 2004 3.90 CLSD, but am still looking for a 2006 3.54 CLSD as well. If anyone has a line on one of the 2006 3.54 CLSD units, please let me know, as it might improve hookup for my 335 rwlb-ft. Torsens are cool, don't need to be re-shimmed, and are very smooth on the street, but are Torque-Sensing, so require torque feedback from the wheel/tire to work. I don't like how they act like an open diff when one wheel is in the air (or on ice), requiring you to left foot brake to get it to lock up again.

FYI... new bolts for these side shafts are NLA from Nissan. I've been working for two months with Courtesy Nissan and Nissan Motorsports and they are just not available. If you buy a set of these side shafts you will have to source the bolts yourself. They can be easily tapped out of any R160, R180, or R200 side shaft.

 

 

FYI...I just ordered 8ea p/n 38228-2100 from nissanparts.cc and they have shipped. That P/N is in chapter 5 page G-8 item 34 of the factory fiche.

Hmmm. That part # isn't a valid #. Maybe there's a typo?
