FiveSeventyZee
I've got exactly 3.5 inches of clearance between my carb and my hood, how does everyone else get a filter in there? At this point I'm looking at the Edelbrock low profile triangle and even that would be touching my hood. Does anyone else have clearance issues? 19762802+2
Well i used a Edelbrock Low profile triangle on my L28 it didn't fit either, So i just grinded down the edge where it meets the Carb until it fit under the hood.
hoov100
lol, flate base with a 4 inch filter, I just cut a 12.5 inch hole where the air cleaner sticks out and fabbed a shield that sits in front of the filter. The filter itself sticks at most 1.5 inches, but with the domed top it totals just over 2.5 inches, most people now are just making snorkels that go to the front of the radiator and running a cone filter. FiveSeventyZee
Well I don't plan on cutting my hood. I like the way the hood looks and I want to keep it that way. I think I'm just gonna cut down the triangle filter to make it work.
19762802+2
I didn't even have to trim it all the way down just enough don't know about the clearance with the V8 but I will go measure it tomorrow and see how tall it is after i trimmed it with about an inch and a half off the base. FiveSeventyZee
Well I would probably just go as far down as possible because I would like to have some space above the filter for the air to flow. As it is it would probably work but it would be touching the hood, I want it to clear better. I was just wondering if there were any nifty ideas people might have that solve this problem/if other people had this problem because all I ever seem to see is the standard round air cleaners. Pyro
lots of options. these use a drop base with a total height of 3.0 inches. http://www.summitracing.com/search/Department/Air-Fuel-Delivery/Section/Air-Cleaners-Flame-Arrestors-Scoops/Part-Type/Air-Cleaners/Air-Cleaner-Fitment/Single-4-barrel-5-1-8-in-diameter/Base-Style/Dropped/Air-Cleaner-Shape/Round/Air-Cleaner-Size/14-in-diameter/Net-Height-from-Carb-Flange-in/3-000-in/?Ns=Rank%7cAsc summits sells them as low as 2 inches. 73240ZT
Hi, I went through the same situation a couple weeks ago. I have a 1973 240z with a chevy 355 cu. in engine using 2000 vortec heads and JTR conversion plates. I went to Auto-Zone and bought the Edelbrock 14" Pro-Flo air filter part # 1221. This filter fits perfectly without any clearance issues. It has a drop base and the paper hope this helps filter is 3" tall, Edited September 27, 2009 by 73240ZT spelling
FiveSeventyZee
Thanks guys. I went with the Proflo triangle and it works pretty well, its very close to the hood but I think it clears
Mike C
The lowest profile air cleaner base I have seen is the Chevrolet factory base. Get them from the aftermarker for about $50, $80 for bottom and top with a paper element. Eventually the triangle type foam filter winds up melting down the carb from a backfire...
