ZR8ED
Don't want to steal any thunder from this amazing thread, but thought I would post about another car with a carbon composite chassis. I originally read about it in kit car magazine back in the late 80's early 90's. 275 lb chassis. I recall a pic of two guys lifting it up! Cool idea of the Z though. Never heard of it being done before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consulier_GTP
JMortensen
How much lighter is this than a stock chassis? A couple hundred pounds maybe? Having lifted a 240 bare chassis with a couple friends, they aren't that heavy. I'd be more excited about having a source for FG body parts like roof and quarter panels than getting a whole FG chassis. If I were going to go 10/10ths I'd do a tube chassis and lay the FG body over it...
mr jdm
Thes guys make a lot of stuff in composite. Maybe if somebody asked them they would make a s30. http://www.prototypecomposites.com/mold.asp

Throttleton
Hi' The weight saving is not in the monocoque (the bit that saves your life!) It is in the rest of the car ( 30kg per door etc.) + no rust + direct swap for all parts. + The point of a grp monocoque is so you don't have to build a tubular chassis:)
Throttleton
Also the one that actually exists is built how he wanted it, not necessarily as they would come in production form. the moulds are there but as to whether you want it Carbon fibre or kevlar or other, super light, super strong, with or without the inner steel cage is all down to the individual buyer. They are/would be, a bespoke item so you could even pick the gel coat final color (within reason). I only put the pics up on zcars out of interest. The company has made over 200 frp cars over the years including classic mini's, morgans, sabers and the like. so I knew if the interest was there then they could produce the 240's in numbers. But like i said the design is not set in stone:)
Throttleton
they have to be tough & safe to set to sea and get passed by the relevant authorities. Also make a Car seem simple:) (i hope the boat pic works)
Throttleton
Hi all, possibly looking to start on another 240 shell for me as a tack car. With a progress thread/pics and maybe a production model at the end of it??. So if you want to add your expertise or just your opinion then nows the time. As i have said, the design is not set in stone:D
19762802+2
I think a 2+2 would be awesome but my opinion may be biased

mark
How about using these parts instead of the stock shaped parts. http://www.zccjdm.com/catalog.php/azcarbum/dt73726/pd1751866/IMSA__REAR_FENDER_FLARES_
Throttleton
by coincidence i was talking to my Boss about this build this morning. He pointed out that the mould for the 240 shell is a multi part mould. The whole sides of the thing bolt on, so i could make a wide body and only have to re-do the sides. This would make it a 'modular' mould that has various options when building. He knows I like the widebody look as we have done it to my Peugeot track/road car. the wide wings would be integral to the sides not just stuck on:) & if its not your thing then the "normal monocoque" shell is still available. here is a pic of my Pug (i love it). sorry its a non z pic:)
mark
I love that Pug also. That is one bad ride!
Throttleton
Thanks:) spent the last 8 years on it but its nearly at the end of the line as far as development goes on both the body and engine. Since that photo I have fitted grp doors and poly windows and saved 20kg per side:) (40 pounds)!!!
NZeder
Are those Hi-spec calipers I spot on the Pug? If you are doing a shell and the chassis is separate why limit your self to the zed suspension, why not build double wish bone setup. Kind of like a Lotus 7/caterham underneath but with a bigger engine and a 240z shell on the top. You could also setup the rear end for the R180 or R200 short nose units as these, at least here in NZ, are common as with all the Skyline, Laurel and other JDM Nissan imports. Throttleton
yea 300mm hi-spec 4 pots:) work pretty well:) The car (240) thats built at work is a labour of love of the boss. He built it from a scrapper. This means he has all the parts to build a car now he has a cool new shell. I on the other hand have nothing. So like you have pointed out I don't have to use 240 parts like running gear or engine:) I plan to trawl through this site to see what other people are doing, for both engine and suspension. I don't want to reinvent the wheel or for this to take another 8 years lol. maybe 350z or BMW motor??

NZeder
Or a nice light but powerful power plant like either of these to same V8. Synergy V8 (made here in NZ using motorcycle heads and custom bottom end) or the Hartley V8 (made in the US again using motorcycle heads and custom bottom end) Click images to go the sites.
