loy
A transmission jack is not needed but handy to have. It can be done without one.
SleeperZ
I don't know exactly how heavy, but I've dropped a T5 by hand (I weight 170lb) and the 4 speed is definitely lighter. If you had an old Mercedes, a jack is required - cast iron is heavy.
hogie
You can do it by hand...not particulary fun though.
Guest Rolling Parts
Hello I need to install new clutch.I know i have put though car on jacks. Do I need transmission jack to drop it and lift it? Will any jack do? Any jack will do. Best for me was to drive the front of the car up on a set of ramps. That gives you enough room to get the tranny out after you drop it. The tranny is about 75 pounds so one way is just get right under it as you push it off the engine. As long as your wrapped around it so it does not drop as much as just you're holding it with your chest as it comes off works pretty well. Tennesseejed
I have removed/installed two transmissions using a floor jack. Perhaps I was particularly lucky, but if you go slowly and spend enough time looking at various angles, it is virtually effortless. Now the rear shaft flange bolts . . . well, that's a different story.
p-factor
"Droppong Transmission" Hello I need to install new clutch. I know i have __ put though car on jacks. Do I need transmission jack to drop it and lift it? Will any jack do? How have is transmission 4 speed? Huh? You can spell "transmission" but not "the" or "heavy"? Anyway, if you end up not using a jack to support the transmission, it might help to have a thick block of wood underneath so it doesn't fall straight down with you under the car. hoov100
You would be lucky if that trans weighs over 50 pounds, just have a friend undo the last top bolt, while your under it holding it in place, as soon as the trans comes off the dowel pins, just lower it to your chest and slide off to your side. easy as that. If I can pull a t56 by myself without a lift or trans jack, you can pull an old z car trans.
theghosttanker
I have used a jack and also just lifted it by hand, but I'm a little larger than average. Remember to support the back of your motor before you pull the tranny. If you don't, it will drop down as you remove the tranny, sometimes enough to damage the throttle linkage.
