BluDestiny
Is anyone running 16x8,9,10... Diamond racing rims on their ZX? I want to know if 16x10's and 4"backspacing with 245/45/16 tires will fit under the wheel well flush with rolled fenders. I do have tokico springs and tokico HP struts in the rear. I know that some folks on this site have ridiculous sized rims (pontiackid and I think knights-something-or-other) and I do recall hearing that 4"backspacing is the sweet spot, but most of them are talking about 15" if i'm not mistaken. Pics are greatly appreciated. Mods if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it to the wheel/tire section.
BluDestiny
After doing much searching for the "proper tire" (to keep the speedo mostly the same reading), I realized that not a lot of tire companies make 245/45/16 tires which makes the speedo off by only .25%. (Calculated using the miata tire size calculator) On that note a popular size that does show up in all the most of the brands I'm looking at is 245/40/17. This actually has even less error with only a .13% difference. Now the main reason I wanted some 16" rims was to swap them to my 260z whenever I wanted for whatever reason. I know that 17" on an S30 chassis are pretty close , if not impossible to fit without flares/cutting the fender in that size (245/40/17). Should I just get the 17" and keep them on the ZX? I'm almost certain that there will be enough room in the rear for that size, and if I stick with 8" wide in the front with 225 width tires, I should be able to keep my full steering. Anyone want to chime in with their opinion?
crazyoctopus
buy 16x10 with the lowest offset you feel comfortable with, if you are are running stock suspension/body work 4.5" backspacing is the highest that 260z can take. roll your fenders and if need be cut the front edge of the front fender to allow full range of motion. PurePontiacKid
Just a fyi, the wheels I test-fitted on my car had about 3.75" backspacing... so if you wanted 4" backspacing, those wheels will only tuck under the car another quarter inch. Now, since you're probably not slamming your car as much as I am, it should be no big deal if you run 245's on them, especially with a roll/pull. I would think that 245/45 would be alot of stretch on a 17" rim... Maybe go with 4.5"-5" backspacing and run even larger tires? For the front, I have coilovers, so I can only fit about 3.75" worth of backspacing safely. If you're not running coilovers, I think you'd be able to fit some 9" wide wheels under there with 4" backspacing without any big problems... sticky280zx
Let me make a simple statement...If you look at your z and zx side by side you will notice the z is alot smaller in the wheel well department because the zx has a sort of "built in flare" which is why the big 17x9.5 group buy wheels fit fine where as on a z they require flares. Here is the sad truth, You almost HAVE to buy 2 sets unless your z is flared. I have found that a nice set of 15x8 with a -13 to -18 offset is about the sweet spot on a lowered/rolled z but also can only run 225-235/50/15 tires on (which is low so the speedo is off) great for get up and go but not good on the highway, But you can always stretch a 215/60-70/15 on it as well for better ratio. Also that same set of wheels on a zx doesnt fit so well BUT you can put a fat 255-60-15 tire on it for a nice all around ratio as well as great contact patch. Worst part is if you keep both cars stock body and want good fitment you will have to get two sets or atleast be flipping between two sets of tires all the time. Hope this helps. -Jeff
BluDestiny
Thank's guys that's what I'm looking for. to sticky280zx: I figured it would be almsot impossible to keep the same set and have the same look on both cars. I guess these tires will be just for my ZX then. to purepontiackid: the 245/45 was for the 16" rims, the 245/40/17 are for the 17" and according to tirerack.com it should fit. I think i'm going to get 17x9.5 for the rear and 17x8.5 for the front with 225/45/17 on it. 4" backspacing all around if you say it will fit. I don't plan on doing any more to the zx I like the ride as it is with the tokico springs and HP's in the rear and illumina's in the front. sticky280zx
Just fyi you can do the 9.5 backs and 9 fronts from the group buy on the zx and they have the best look/fit (out of the box on just a shock/spring car). Going off of my old zx that had illuminas all the way around with msa sway bars and eibach springs. BluDestiny
you mean the Rota RB-R's right? Not really the style I'm going for, but if that's the fit on a ZX then those are the exact numbers want. I'm pretty sure -13 offset on a 9" wide rim is equal to 4 in backspacing(1/2 an inch plus the 4 inches). and the -19 offset for the 9.5 inch with 4" backspacing (.75 inches plus the 4" backspace) What size tires are on those if you don't mind me asking. sticky280zx
I understand about the look, i just had alot of money in the car and didnt want to spend another fortune on nice size/fit wheels and the car (imo) was too nice for a set of steel wheels (but they are nice wheels and great price). But the tires are 275/40/17 rear and 235/40/17 front and i think they were toyo proxes T1R's. Edited April 13, 2010 by sticky280zx
BluDestiny
If I had your car I wouldn't get steel wheels either. Your car looks like a beauty from those pics. Love the louvers and that body kit, MSA type 2 right? I'm thinking I'll need at least 265/40/17 in the rear to get that flush look you have with the 275's
sticky280zx
It was very nice, was going to be in a magazine till my dad put it around a tree, then he bought another one and we were swapping everything over to it. Needless to say there was alot of my blood, sweat, and tears in that car and i didnt want to help him build another car and the same thing happen so he's on his own this time lol. plastic 1/4 louvers and rear, and yes type 2 kit, 3.1 robello with trips under the hood...heres the aftermath thread http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php?/topic/84536-this-should-make-you-sickcustom-280zx-totalled/
m1ghtymaxXx
I've been contemplating a set of diamond racing wheels, but I'd was going to price out custom set of 17x9.5, since I can't find anything in that size in a style I like that's remotely affordable.
