z2go
Well, it's been a while since I last posted. Been pretty busy with the Z and otherwise, just haven't had time to get pictures up. Most of the things I've been doing lately on the car are minor, non-visible necessities. However, I have gotten the fuel tank mounted, almost all of the fuel lines built and routed, and I also sprung for the Toyota 4x4 non-vented front calipers and 240sx Modern Motorsports rear disc brake conversion. Extremely easy conversion to do. I've also begun refinishing the dash, repairing it with foam sealant and SEM bumper repair as prescribed in the dash repair threads that are abundant in the Z community. So far so good, but one thing I didn't think about... the bumper repair sands well but takes a while... I shouldn't have globbed it on like I did! Should turn out well though when I'm done with the hours of sanding.

z2go
Yet another update... after two days of working hard, and with the help of a knowledgeable friend, we built the exhaust almost to completion. It is fully custom, with just a few pre-bent angles, 2.5" to 3". I waited to order the muffler because I wasn't sure what I would be working with, but I picked it out, and it should be here soon. In case you are keeping track, I will not be using the SuperTrapp, partially because it was going to be a difficult fit, and partially because it's 2.5". I put two vibrant resonators right after the flex joint, then joined the pipes after the transmission. The Y is a creation that we came up with, it's a 2.5" pipe that is flared out to 3", where the two meet, and then 3" from there on. All welding was done with my crappy generic MIG welder. More pictures later today of the rest.
bjhines
nice idea for the front half of the exhaust!
z2go
Thanks! I'm welding up the rest (besides the muffler) right now, should have some pictures soon.
z2go
A couple more pictures. I had the Y built, and then decided I didn't like how it joined, I wanted it to be a little more gentle, and a little bigger. So, I cut out that section outlined in pen, and cut a 3" pipe to fit over the area, to create a more gradual transition. Lastly, I put it in place. Now, all I need to do is weld it to the resonators, and fab the two 90's once the muffler gets here today. It fits perfectly between the differential and the suspension, and is tucked up nicely. From the side, you can only see the two resonators in the front.

z2go
More progress... after a few setbacks. The muffler I ordered with offset inlet and outlet did not work. Today was the last day I had to finish welding (using borrowed gas), so I tracked down a center inlet/offset outlet muffler of the same type, after an hour and a half of driving. I was able to finish the exhaust, and grind down some of the welds. I also was able to finish up the front Toyota 4x4 brake upgrade, since the Earl's braided brake lines came in today. z2go
Ive been following this thread, neat little story at the beginning, everything looks great, looking forward to finished build Glad you enjoyed it! Here's another update... Finished the dash just now, textured it with this stuff made in Canada called Sure Tex instead of the SEM brand texture. It came out really nice, didn't have to do anything to it, and it created a really nice looking texture. painted it with SEM trim black, and now it is just waiting to dry and be reassembled. clutchdust
Wow, I just came back to the forum and look what you've gone and done! Great, now I have all these new ideas and even more work to do. Seriously, very, very nice work. The color choice wouldn't be mine, but the Mrs really likes it so we may paint hers that or something very similar. I would like to have a better idea of what you did to repair your floorpans and that rear deck lid as I have rust there as well. If you can spare the time, I would appreciate pics. Let me know and I'll forward you my e-mail.

TegRacer324
Wow man that looks good. Pretty much what needs to be done to mine but I haven't touched it for years due to the floors. When you put the floors in did you just do it on jackstands? Looks like you welded both inside and underneath the car. I was able to get it high enough to easily work on it from underneath and from the inside.

z2go
So, it's been a little while since an update. I had a couple of weeks where work was killing me, so I didn't have much time to work on the Z. Last weekend I was able to finish the brakes, all they need now is bleeding. The fuel lines are all 100% ran as well. I had to modify the right front brake line, as you can see from the pictures. Partly because I re-routed the line for aesthetic purposes, and partly because the header is so close to the stock location, I decided to avoid the 'hot' area and just go through the frame rail. I used some rubber grommets and sealed around them as well. Word to the wise - it's a pain to run these hard lines with the motor already in! I also used a universal lokar emergency brake cable kit to fabricate a new E-brake for the car. I used the stock lever/pull system, but used the original line bracket location to bolt on a modified hangar. The location works perfectly with the r200 nose in the lowered RT style position. The cable housing ran very well to the 240sx caliper brackets, which I also modified to take the original E-brake bracket (the 240sx bracket was a little fat to work very well). It's nice being able to modify just about anything with a little bit of welding. Other than that, I spruced up the E-brake handle, which was sun bleached and pitted... I used the same texture material as on the dash to give it a new feel, just spraying closer to imitate a sort of leathery look, and painted with the same black trim paint. We will see how well it holds up. Among other things, I have modded the heater blower motor for the honda motor, and started polishing and sealing all the latch hardware. Other than that, I've been working on the dash wiring, which should be done soon (probably the biggest pain of this project so far, beside the spindle pins!). Once the dash wiring is complete and dash installed, all the other wiring will not take long, and after tying up the loose ends... maybe it will be time to fire it up! Ztogo: You have done fantastic work on the 240Z. Everything is immaculate. You mentioned using something on the dash. Can you describe the process and materials used to restore the dash PLEASE. Keep up the good work and ESPECIALLY the good photos. Keep them coming. I also have a 240Z and wish to restore the dash. Also putting in a SBC engine and manual trans.
