I have been doing a bunch of research into a trans swaps to the l28. Looks like the very strong 6 speed t56 (readily available with lots of parts also) is very swapable to the l28 block. these are the links I have found thus far that come close to describing on how to do it. I am looking for this guy with the 510 and where the heck he got that bell-housing but I can't find him. Does anyone know? I WANT ONE! :)

Just a guy talking about it.

The 510 is mentioned here this is where I found the 510 link just ctrl-f then l28

Any help finding where to get that bell-housing would be great guys!

It would be cool, but to be honest, is it worth it? Money wise what you spend on a transmission and building the L28, you could probably get the same thing, power, usablility, t56, everything. From a different engine, such as an LS1, for much cheaper. Its a really cool idea, I am just trying to think real about it. I was going to do a 1uz swap becasue a 1uz is super cheap and makes good power. Then I was looking for what it cost to put a 5 speed on it. 1500 dollars for a cast bell housing is not something that makes it worth it to put a 300 dollar 1uz into a 240z. Like I said, super cool but I am just trying to think real here.

The T56 was used due to the first, my machist/fabricator said He could make it fit and second it could handle repeated drag lauches with over 400rwh on slicks (which it can). It is also not a cheap swap , it cost me a grand for a T56 that needed a 5th gear syncro (400) and another grand for the T5 bellhousing, machine work and welding. If your looking just to swap the T56 for the "cool" factor I would suggest the Z32 5 speed, if you need a transmission that can handle a lot of abuse and still be streetable I can put you in touch with my machinist/fabricator.

So, why wont this work? You may need the ford T-5 to T56 part # but couldn't you just use the ZXT Bellhouse and go from there?

I also know D&D performance makes a similar setup...

Part 8-207

You could, my setup is very similar. The problem is that once the Datsun T5 bellhousing is bolted to the adaptor a Datsun T5 front bearing retainer will be needed. The issue from this point is that the T56 input shaft does not reach the back of the crankshaft, or even the flywheel so the T5 bellhousing was milled and welded to an aluminum adaptor plate and a GM pilot bearing was placed in the aluminum flywheel. It is more than a simple bolt in as the steel adaptor and the T5 bellhousing would both have to be milled and the setup in my car saves 20lbs and didn't sacrafice any strenght. Unless you need a transmission for repeated drag strip abuse over 400 rwh on slicks I would use the Z32 units, they are easier to shift (a T56 with a Hurst shifter shifts like a truck when cold, but is spot on when the revs are up and the trans is warm) .
