  1. Datsun offered 3 five speed trannys from the 1977 introduction year to 1983.... one from 77-79..... one odd ball only in 1980 and one tranny in '81 to '83. 77'-79' are wide ratio and '81-'83 are close ratio..... 77-79 are good for take-off acceleration. The 81-83 tranny will get you better gas mileage in 5th gear and not get you away from the stop light as the earlier 5 spd.. The 1980 tranny gear ratio is in between the other two tranny's and also there was a Borg warner T5 five speed for Turbo ZX 81-83 and is not the same length as the regular five speeds which will cause interchange problems for driveshaft.... The '81-'83 was coupled to a 3.90 differential and any reduction in the diff gearing sacrfices acceleration.....'75- 78 ...280 z had 3.54 differentia for all trannys i.e. auto 4 & 5 spd... 81-83 turbo zx had 3.54.. 81-83 non turbo have 3.90 and a 85-86 200 sx turbo has a 4.11........I am not sure what earlier automatic equipped Z's had if not in the range of 3.90 to 4.11.?. King cab manual and auto pickups had a 4.10 differential with the 4 cylinder L20 B which is a L6 280 minus 2 cylinders. 2+2 should be same with longer drive shaft....clutch, flywheel, pressure plate are a hair larger and will fit but installed together..Coupe has 550 pressure plate....2+2 slightly hair wider plate surface area. Turbo's have 780 pound pressure plate and a wider plate area. 2+2 tranny with it's pressure plate clutch ,throw out bearing, clutch fork and slave cylinder will bolt right up to the L6... get the 2+2 throw out bearing.... beacause Datsun made a lot of them for Z's in diferent lengths

  2. Those stanza trunk hinges are great but I could not find the correct position to place them on the GTO hood or the fender flange...... Maybe have the hood propped totally open temporarily utilizing the Mazda RX-7 rear glass hinges on the outside hood and nose piece (Vella Rossa deck lid hinge) and position the Stanza hinge in position underneath... In re-thinking it would appear the the GTO hood would have to be in proper position to locate the mounting points for the Stanza hinges and securing the RX7 hinges (which I have) on the outside of hood and nose piece would be optimable with the front end and hood removed and elevated off the chassis so you could get inside the fenders and under the hood easily.????? My GTO hood is equipped with mounting studs for the Corvette hinges which are not in the right place for the Stanza hinge. So far I have found one Corvette hinge that was not stolen. I will look for the Kit Car Magazine that featured a build-up of the Tomahawk and displayed the modified Stanza hinge. Actually the kit featured in one magazine photograph was my # 8 Tomahawk. The Tomahawk (before it was vandalized), hood would stay open fully by virtue of the hinge without a hood support rod which the Corvette hinge could never do on a GTO. Also the Corvette hinge is secured to the chassiss which could later cause alignment problems while the Tomahawk/Stanza hinge is better mounted for permanent alignment to the fiberglass fender flange of which flange the GTO shares in close comparison. I have not gave up on the placement of the Stanza hinges for a GTO, but the extra set I have is about worn out from experimentation placement..

  3. venders on e-Bay are selling adjustable coil over kits cheaper than their shipping charges... 10 bucks for a complete set (that's $2.50 a corner LOL) and 25 dollars for shipping. For some reason I suspect some "get rich quick" vendors are substituting reputable brand name products in their packages to customers???? "sump'n screwed up, here".or are former Enron employees peddling suspension parts????. I am trying to find some honest to goodness coilovers with weight ratings and have to scroll thru a 1000 or more "buy it now" ads to find a couple QA-1., Afco, or Carerra offerings for 600 # or more springs. ..................................................................................................................Has anyone any measurement of the inside diameter of those cheap coilover's aluminum threaded adjusting sleeves...maybe just a hair over 2 inches.... I had a set of Bilsteins adjusting sleeves bored out for 280 struts.

  4. I would stay away from the e-Bay plastic body 'talbots" unlesss you have examined the brand before. I picked up a couple Hellla (the light people) brand plastic bodied side mirrors at two different swap meets that were streamlined intergrated mount and mirror that look great and extremely well made. The problem is one is black and the other chrome plated with this mirror line discontinued by Hella. I like two side mirrors. Those motorcycle mirrors on the VR look very similar to the racing mirrors in carbon fiber being offered all over now...... Mark, checked your website out................you have some of the best accessory parts to complete the VR..... In a couple months my financial situation may stabalize enough to get back to work on my projects. The Tomahawk has lost too much to replace for the time being but the GTO 250 could be started with the silver Z as donar. The silver 280 Z is a non oil burner with fuel delivery issues from setting over two years. Since I had 2 1/2 years to think about this conversion.. I plan to use the stock steel fenders as an underlay to the GTO front assembly. Rory Bateman designed the Tomahawk with this concept of retaining the modified stock fenders. I positioned the GTO front on the Tomahawk prepared frontend and it fit like a glove. This leaves the steel front fenders/doors dust guards intact from dust etc entering the passenger compartment.. I also plan to incorporate the stock front vented steel cowl to the GTO fiberglass fenders and eliminate the (inaccessable) GTO fiberglass cowl. Where the seam of steel cowl and GTO fiberglass fenders meet , I plan to incorporate a slding hood lock pin to cameoflauge the seam. Also the front grille and air ducts area enclosed with removable fiberglass panels with attaching points to a constructed flange inside the nose piece and the inner steel fender mounting points to caputure the air to the radiator more fully. Flanges constructed inside the GTO fenders to accept lightweight inner fender panels attaching to the inner steel fender wells. I plan to use the Z door handles and will try to utilze the Z locking key mechanisim under the door handles. Apparently the old "Alphabet" GTO's used the key mechanisim below the stock door handles. I want to splash a mold off the top of the roof to obtain a thin fiberglass roof cap to fit hidden behind the drip rails and windshield molding and molded into the fiberglass GTO rear tub properly. I want adjustable coil overs and refresh the entire suspension for road car performance and retain the EFI L 6. A lot of my parts were stolen but I could borrow the suspension parts from the Tomahawk (but should not). Anyway I am searching the net for more parts and for a lot less money and frustration I can put the GTO together than attempt to finish the Tomahawk at this time.. I have a complete 4 bbl- 4 bolt main 350 to slip in the Tomahawk to replace the stripped 350 engine that was in it. I still cannot look at the Tomahawk without going into a rage and it will be a lot easier to work on the GTO.... the end turn outs of the Tomahawk's side exhausts were stolen and the rest were left intact.. Not much more to replace the whole system than replace chrome plated end turn outs...... now I am ranting again!!!!!!!!! I still cannot talk or write about the Tomahawk.

  5. Due to introduction of federal interstate highway funding, most all of our individual motor vehicle codes are written by the the federal bureacrats on the urging of insrance interests and adopted by the states on threats of withholding highway funds for non-compliance making major provisions of all state motor vehicle codes identical, consider...... The "clckit or ticket" national seatbelt campaign is federally funded and required for the states to support the campaign by all the state and local law enforcement supplies and vehicles paid in part by the federal dollar.

  6. green dots were coming up regularly on eBay and sometimes would slip by the collectors. Afew years back I was at a flea market in Kiev Ukraine and came across a green dot .. Did not buy because of the green dot on top//had no idea what it meant... could have bought for a buck or 5 hyrivna (grievna)

  7. You may have an "extension" on the old strut cartridge that were usually placed on the rear cartridges.... If your new cartridges are short in the tube.... you will need the extension piece.. the cartridges shoud fit tight and solid in the strut tubes when the gland nut is tightened securely in place. Sometimes the shorter 240 Z cartridges were used in the 280 strut tubes to make shorter 240 cartridges fit the longer 280 strut tubes an extension was added

  8. get some Talbot style bullet mirrors.... the kind that was on all the 50 and 60's Sports cars..... I got mine off eBay from a privte seller---cheap...for the 250 GTO ...............there are commercial sellers peddling thier reproductions and every once in awhile some authentic Talbots appear on eBay but usually the most for wear... Also there are carbon fiber race ones for race cars that look like motorcycle morrors....

  9. Chuck Beck who builds a highly successful replica of the 550 Porsche Spyder places an inline brake lock that leads to the rear drum brakes.. This is not a legal parking brake and over a period of time dependability maybe sacrificed.. In theory a great idea but in practice.........................................a poor substitute for a permanent parking brake.........Tim do not flair those fenders.......................get another body

  10. Beware.....................I use the in Moroso inline cast aluminum radiator hose filler sold by Jegs...This radiator inline hose filler sets above the location of the more expensive chevy manifold filler neck and makes it easier to fit the non OEM radiator hose from the chev manifold to the Griffin aluminum radiator. The Griffin radiator top sets up higher than the "advertised" highest point of the Chevy engine making that manifold location for a filler cap. a "real hot pisser" when removing the cap when the top of the radiator is higher than the filler neck. I also had no clearance problems with the Tomahawk Z hood and the inline filler. It was a long stretch under the hood to the Griffin radiator to remove the filler cap on the radiator. Eyeball your radiator top and the location of the new filler neck......if radiator is higher ....Beware it's a pisser! Larry Johnson AKA Tomahawk Z

  11. slow your current restoration down and do some serious searching for a better project.. place some free wanted ads for a Z in the geographical area you have access to. I was garage sale-ing yesterday and came across a 77 280 Z the guy wanted $200.00 for the car that either had electrical or fuel issues.. Car idled great but nothing more. The fellow had hot plans for the Z but cannot fix it or knows any one who can.The car set 8 months before his purchase and ran great the 50 miles home and in a few days... quit running except for an idle...sound familiar? Rust was absolute minimal. There has got to be something in your area that is either unfinished project or is not eaten away with rust. Go on a hunting mission. They are there...you just have to find them where they are at because one will not coming looking for you.

  12. Every other week you try a new bigger brake modification that is not compatiable with the last brake modifications..Every expensive purchase that you make is followed by knowledge of a less expensive and better version... You are doing 90 MPH and 100 miles from home when everything quits.
