  1. Did you get the detonation under control?
  2. Clifton posted photos of my car from another site, this is my car right here http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=101234
  3. Yea besides all the NAPA parts I put in my motor (that they had in stock) 2 weeks ago the dealer took a whole 2 days to get me the one tranny gasket I needed from the dealer. This motor only came in every supra, soarer and many other Japaniese models. And remember every tom dick and harry dosent want theirs because they have head gasket problems. So your right this motor will be much harder to get new parts from the dealer than the L series motors. Cause you know thats where you get "ALL" new motor parts "the dealer"
  4. Math shmaths, when we start loosing pressure/af/hp at rpms then we will do something about the fuel lines. Clifton just keeps telling me to "do it" and fix it if it dosnet work. But it always works. Sept the blown motor, but that wasnt his fault. AZ
  5. I will say this, the motor mounts and the trans mount were the easiest part of my conversion. Everything else was the hard part, It only takes time. I sure dont regret my 7m swap it hauls a$$ at only 10-13 psi. Thanks Clifton.
  6. Last night a neighbor friend needed to borrow my engine hoist and needed my help putting it on the trailer. After we finished loading it, I left him with the cherry picker (he was gonna need it) and walked home, it was nice out and a short walk. Between his house and mine is another neighbor with a couple of Vipers. I had always felt bad about not stopping by and introducing myself as I am a pretty friendly guy. I guess since I havent had a fast (running) car until recently, I didnt have much in commom with him. Anyways as I walked passed his house I could see he was pulling out of the garage in back. I always like to see what my car can do next to these cars. My house is only like 3 houses away, then I started to think "hey maybe he is just out for a drive" hell it was like 7:30-8:00 on a Monday night. So I began to walk faster until I thought hey I can probably catch him, I ran in the back I ran in the house told my wife "I gotta show someone my car" She was like "What?!?!? huh What". I said "Ill be back in a bit". I jumped in the car backed down the drive way as fast as I could, looked down the road, "Damn nothing". Zipped up to the next next intersection "Damn nothing". Down to the next, and still nothing. I got out to the first major street "Oh I think I see him". Now my heart is pumpin pretty good, partly from running back to, and thru the house, and partly from getting a chance to race a Viper again. I make my way thru traffic and there he is one car in front of me. EXCELLENT!!!! (you know like MR Burns, wringing his hands) We are south bound on Gilbert from Mcdowell all the way to Superstition. There is a ton of traffic and even a little construction. He is going painfully slow but I understand why. In just the 5-6 miles I have been following him at least a dozen people have tried to push me out of the way to get up close to see his car, its like a rolling circus act, it really does look super bitchen. Its red with yellow decals and HUGE yellow wheels, it looks like a matchbox car come to life. I get behind him I get in front of him I get beside him and nothing, I cant even get him to look. Im half thinking maybe he dosent even drive em fast, but I think naw that cant be, I heard thru the neighborhood gossip that he does go to the race track (but Im still not sure what he does there). Anyways he is driving like a perfect gentleman, Damn. We squeeze thru construction and round the corner on to the superstition west, normally there would be two full lanes for us to have it out on, all the way up to the entrance ramp to the freeway, but Damn there was a van that got right in front of us and he could have easily slipped past but he was being good, and rightly so that car is still attracting a lot of attention. We continue west on the 60 until the 101 north and still nothing both times, I dont even think he looked, I do the same drill, front, back, side, left, right, still nothing but he was right to stay cool there was a ton of traffic. Were coming up on the 202 east to head home and Im a few cars ahead of him I make my way to the right lane and head east on the exit ramp im pretty much gonna give up and we get on the 202 and there is almost no traffic and we round the past the bridge at dobson and he catches up to me. Oh Oh am I imagineing this? Now we are next to each other I drop a gear and he finally looks we have a good clean stretch in front of us and he grabbs a gear and stands on it and DOH Im caught in the middle of 4th, S#!T I drop to 3rd quick and he gets the jump on me, IM not loosing bad but he is still beating me for most of the gear. My nose is at his tail and Damn..., Oh wait now im not loosing ground now I start to gain on him, my nose is at the back of his door and he goes for 4th and Whinn nanana He misses the shift. I zip past Damn that was fun but not what I wanted. I stand on the brakes for what seems like a pretty long time. We cool it for a bit and he crept up to me and we slowed down again (I didnt notice the speed but Im in 3rd and right where my boost hits hard) and gives me the thumbs up, and I ask "Wanna go again" he nods and now I got him right where I want him. 3rd gear 3400 rpm's I squeeze on the brakes I stand on the gas, the boost is at max I count to 3 on my fingers and side step the brake, we are off. We are at the left curve just past the Mcdowell exit. I have the left lane (he was in the middle) and I got the jump on him and was gaining good, Whooo Hoooo, I go for 4th and look back and he has gotten on the brakes and is in the far right lane (thats a pretty tight curve for over 100). I look around and make sure we are in the clear. I slow down and he gives me the thumbs up and now the road is straight and I ask if he wants to go again and he says "I dont want to get a ticket" I dont blame him but I really wanted to go again, bummer. Since I was pretty confident he was goin back to my neighborhood and we would both be turning north at the Gilbert exit I thought yea, but the exit light had turned green before we got to it and there was a Geo Metro in the left lane, I got in the right lane hoping that he would follow but he got behind the Metro Damn. Oh well, I went back home, and he was pretty far back so I thought I could make it into my driveway without him noticing, but he saw where I had turnned and followed me down the back drive way and I ran in the garage and turned on the flood lights and waved him in. He was real cool and I appologized for being a Hoodlum and taunting him and he appoligized for not wanting race again. I said "No No thats fine, you didnt go out for a race you went out for a sunday drive and I harrased you the whole way". He said "NO thats fine I would have loved to go out and do it right but there was to much traffic everywhere". we BS'ed awhile, popped hoods and he invited me over to his house/garage any time, and I will take him up on it soon. I my opinion all these Viper guys are pretty cool. Out of 3 I have encountered all 3 were willing to GO. That makes it 2 out of 3 vipers for me now. I cant say anywhere near the same for Vettes, of any year. Thats cool though not everybody (vette guys) wants to race all the time. Besides there are tons more vettes and not all of them bought them to go fast and thats cool with me too. Now Im positive the first Viper I happened upon was pressurized. Cant wait to turn up the boost. Im at 10 psi with it creeping to 13 by the top of the r's.
  7. Other than my own very limited track days, I think I can vouch for the Willwood brake setup. Willwoods dont pump air into themselves, you just need to know how to bleed them properly. I drove a round for a day or two until I got mine sorted (all the air) out. They have 2 bleeders per caliper and people are not patient enough to bleed the same corner 5 times. You need to do it slowly. I have watched Clifton do repeated 140+ mph down to 45-50 mph. Stompin on the binders while road racin once every 60 seconds. He is running willwoods same as me, we each have a set of old AZ Z car willwood brakes one one car and a set of the new 5 lug kit willwood brakes on our Supra turbo powered Z cars. Not only do they work awesome Dave at AZ Z car told me that he has only sold 1 rebuild kit "EVER" and thats because one of his customers did a full lap with his line lock partially engaged and it smoked the fluid and everything, not sure if that guy bought pads too but it would be a safe bet. Also Dave told me that after selling Willwoods for almost 22 years that he has sold approximately 1 replacement set of pads per year and that didnt start until the 5th or 6 year. When you see the thickness of the pads you will know why. Heres a shot of my 5 lug rear
  8. 350's not my goal its just what it happend to be. When I bought the wastegate it came with a 10 pound spring. I have plenty of other goodies and it should be between 450 and 500 RWHP before Im done. As soon as im confident I wont hurt the motor (again) and I have all the bugs worked out I will start turning up the boost. probably between 18 and 22 psi, but we will see what the turbo likes best. For fuel tank mods, go to Cliftons sig page check out his website, I think he shows pictures in there, of what he did. I will post photos when I find them. Heres the short story, (on the gas tank) we got the Supra Tank, we cut a hole in the top, took the fuel tank flange, sender/fuel pump mount, and the supra baffel out and put it (welded it) in the Z car tank. (Please dont even think of welding in your tank unless you know what you are doing).
  9. I have known Clifton for more than 15 years and we met thru Z circles, he is a good friend and an awesome resource but I want to make sure I am not voulenteering his services, but he has always been helpful. AZ
  10. Sparks: Clifton has been for a ride to verify my SOTP meter and it feels like about 350 RWHP. On Saturday evening here in Mesa I did a roll on with a black convertable viper 3 times in a row and dropped him each time. He kept going just to race me then did a u turn back to the bank (I bank with also) use the ATM machine I followed him and I hollered "Thanks it was fun" and he had a big smile on his face and said "thanks" back. Seemed to be a very nice guy. 73turbo: Nope its the stock 71 they all look the same. Nope thats the brake rotor hat and the AZ Z car 5 lug rotor kit. Yep, Its a 3.70 LDS with a smooth cover on it and an AZ mustache bar for that differential, Yup thats all it does, same thing as the stock one, just looks cooler and its tighter (urethane). Nope NOT AT ALL for the IC it fits in the stock holes with no cutting, it was a bitch to fab on the intercooler. BUT for the Fresh air intake I cut a perfect oval hole like 6" by 4.5 in the flat area right under the front right IC inlet for the air filter. Yup with my own custom radiator fan support. The fan is 18 inches in diameter. Any air dam covers it completely, camera angle probably makes it look worse than it is. They are stock Z seats, just out of a 1984 300 ZX turbo with the inflatable lumbar support, thigh support and with the adjustable torso width knob. There must be 8 different adjustments you can make with these. Kinda heavy but they are comfy. Thanks that was my intention. Now I gotta go find some F body guys to go beat up on. AZ
  11. Yea Clifton is a very good friend, he helped me a bunch. I couldnt have done it with out him. Well I probably could have it jut would have taken me probably 2 more years to complete it and my wife would have left me. As it was, it took me about 5 months of every spare moment after work and at least 15 whole weekends (sun up to sun down Sat and Sun) from mid November 04 to April 05 Here's a few more shots of interest to Z guys. I got filthy rolling around under the car cleaning off the tunnel but I think it looks pretty good under there? What do you think? This was during my rewiring of the head lights and fan relay and the A/C, hell it was just a big wiring mess. I Drove the car to emissinons less than 48 hours after this photos was taken. Passed with flying colors, like 1/3 of the maximum alowables. Poor photo but look very closely how the intercooler goes thru the core support. Im really happy with how it came out.
  12. but I flat out NEED the Drag radials that I have on it. My old POS dry rotted Goodyear tires would have went up in smoke with this motor combo.
  13. yea a little bit, but it was already done from when I had 16x7 Rikens w/ 255 50 16's on it. Hell the Rikens came even closer, both the front and rear sat a bit further outboard
  14. Oh thats my car, Clifton linked to my post on another site. The rears are 275 40 17's on 9 inch wide 5 zigen wheels. The fronts are 245 45 17's on 8 inch wide. Thanks for the compliments.

    7m-gte

Yes this is possible. you should be able to pick up a whole crashed Supra from an insurance auction in your area, or just look for a cheap roach of a car. Expect to change the head gasket right away "they all go". Get a metal one dont even bother with the stock one while your at it get head studs too. Oh and make sure to check and see if this car has always had COOLANT in it I recently finished mine and promplty blew the HG and detonated some pistons too. Tonight the second motor will go in. see my link on the surpa boards here, hope the title dosent ruffel any feathers, but its the truth this motor ROCKS THE HOUSE. http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278283 all I have done to this motor is install a t4 60-1 with an "O" trim hotside w/ .70 ar ratio and a big intercooler with 3 inch plumbing in and out and this thing hauls A$$. To be honest I think back on my college days and I probably had the time but not enough money to do it exactly like this but it depends on your resources and fabrication skill level. As soon as I get my life back in order (I have spent every wakeing moment making this car a reality for the last 3 months) I think I am going to start selling motor mounts, Trans mounts hose kits, Turbo and wastegate adapters shifters and driveshafts. To be honest 350rwhp will be the max the stock turbo is worth @ maybe 15-18 psi depending on other mods, but it feels awesome in a light weight Z Also check out this site Clifton helped me every step of the way, Thanks Clifton. http://www.geocities.com/clifton_ragland/Z.html With 533 RWHP Clifton is somewhat of an authority on this motor in this car. I have driven this car and it is SCARY fast. 60-120mph faster than most any other car can go from 0to60. All I can say is if someone tells you what you cant do, take a look at what they have done. If they havent done anything, they are not worth listening to. If they have made a mistake doing the exact same thing you are going to do, research it to see if you can keep from making the exact same mistake. Chances are one little change and it will all work out for you. I if it dosent you will never make that mistake again. Dont get your stuff from a junk yard one piece at a time you will spend 4X the price and you will forget at least a dozen things doing it. Here are a few of the things you will need to make it cheep Motor(complete as you can get it) harness (including coil pack, relays, injection resistors) ECU Trans Driveshaft (output at least) Fuel tank (w/ sender and pump) throttle cable gas pedal (complete assembly) shifter intercooler fuel lines and injectors Turbo Turbo down pipe Radiator hoses IC hoses A/C compressor (if you want that to work) oil cooler and lines Tach guts out of instrument cluster (and needle) alternator. Stuff you will need to make or buy Motor mounts trans mount shifter driveshaft fuel tank radiator IC plumbing Ehxaust A/C plumbing hole in fire wall for ECU mount for ECU plumbing for oil cooler fuel line plumbing Then the absolute first mod you will NEED is brakes. The stock ones absolutely wont hold up to more than 3-5 hard stops, then you will learn very unforgivingly what brake fade or boiling fluid is all about. Good luck, and keep me posted. And yes my conversion has been worth every minute and cent. AZ
  16. GHToyko, hope you got your Z from out west or down south they seem to be in so much better shape than back east or from the rust belt. 240zxt Once you get the motor "in" deal with the driveshaft THEN. You will spend a whole bunch more than the $45-$75 it will cost you to shorten the drive shaft on little other doodads, first mod bigger turbo, 2nd Intercooler, bigger injectors. But first get it in the car and running. This weekend should be the first weekend I have heard an exhaust note from my 71 240z in more than 10 years. Im happy as a little girl!!!! Git er done
  17. Hey Im the friend Clifton is speaking of, Clifton just dives right in and keeps telling me "Dont to be afraid!". And he's been right every time. He hauld a$$ in my opinion to get it done in 1 month. At first I thought great 1 month but then the wheels started turning and I figured, if the thing ran perfect as soon as I started it up then it would be real difficult to talk my wife into more mods to make it faster. So the modifications commenced. I agree with Clifton dont worry about the stock Turbo, Get a 60-1 t4 with an "O" trim exhaust housing. I can advise what I have done so far but I would rather wait a week or so (til I get it running) before I comment. As for Cliftons car... Well let me say, in person and on line Clifton is very knowlegable, and extremely mild manored. Im more the excitable type. After the first ride in Cliftons car I was sold. Mind you the car probably made 325-350 RWHP at that time since that ride I have started my conversion and am taking quite a bit more time to get it done (my own analness and lots of other responsibilities and serious OT at work) but Clifton has added H2O/meth injection a huge intercooler, a t66 turbo, and continual tweeking with this and that and his car is OMFG jump up and down slaming your fists on your knees pointing at the car in maniacal laughter FAST!!! is it AWESOME. Being that I have known Clifton for like 16+years he recently let me drive it again (probably like the 4th time or so) since the 7M swap and let me say the rate at wich you leave people rolling on from 65mph on up, is probably faster than most fast cars leave the rest of the grocery getters from a stop light. His car now makes very near 500 RWHP @ 24 PSI. Clifton is very modest, his car is incredibly fast!!! And he's a smokin good driver and he has been an incredible help in making this happen for me. Thanks Clifton!!! DO get the 7m if you think you have the resources to complete the conversion, you wont regret it. 500 RWHP in a 2600lbs car is a blast. Hell 350 hp from a motor as solid as the 7m-gte feels awesome. I will always be 1-3 steps behind Clifton but thats fine with me, he has been a great help in telling me what to avoid and where to save money and where it is best spent. Andy Z
  18. Anybody remember seeing a post or site where a guy took his stock halfshafts apart and shortened them. I installed an r200 LSD and custom Chromemoly control arms and I plan on running the control arms as far inboard to bring my wheels in cause the only wheels I could get will put my wheels about a half inch to far out board. I want to make sure they dont bind when I compress and was looking for that link. Anybody remember it?
