  1. drftn, I like your pics and ideas. I like the idea of the dual headlamps. If you want something to mock up headlights with, why not go to a junkyard and pull a set of old ones? Then you can work on those, and do whatever you want to them. Just throwin' in my 2 cents

    paint prep

Forgot to mention that I have a 1995 LT1 out of a caprice cop car. So it has the iron heads.
  3. I figured it out by going to a junkyard and just taking it apart. You will have to remove the inner trim around the window, and also the silver outter piece(if you have a ZX).
  4. I just wanted to share something with everyone that I did while painting my heads with engine paint. My roommate said it was a cool idea, and should be posted, so here it goes. I was painting my engine that I had just received from the machine shop and had to tape up the frieze plugs. That was a PITA. So when I looked at my heads for painting, I looked at the spark plug holes, and the holes that the mounting bolts go through, I cringed. As I was looking at the holes a thought came to me, these holes look like a penny could fit in them. So I crabbed a bunch of loose change and tried them out. Well it turns out that pennies fit in the spark plug holes perfectly! And nickels lay over the mounting holes nicely. I did a search trying to find if someone already mentioned this, but didn't find anything. Well that saved a bunch of time from taping up holes. Hope this helps out my fellow DIYers.
  5. I second that motion. Or at least one of those call-in talk radio shows.
  6. I got the t-56 from a 96 firebird. It has the stock bellhousing already. I just need the flywheel, and clutch. And the LT1 is from a 95 caprice cop car.
  7. So would the driveshaft off the 4l60E slide into a t-56? They both have the same sline count, so they should(just want to make sure I understand this correctly). If it does then I could just have the one I've got shortened, and have a new yoke for the diff put on. So an update is needed. I've got the engine out of the cop car, and tore it down with the help of my roommate. Brought it over to a machine shop and had them look at it for me, you know, all the good. Got a rebuild kit from summit with hyper pistons .030 over. I talked to comp cams, and they suggested their 07-304-8, and new valvetrain parts. I've got isky springs good to .500 lift already though. Is this cam good for smog legel cars? The guy just said that it isn't guaranteed, but it should. And that doesn't give me warm fuzzies. Well that's it for now, thanks for your help.
  8. Thank you very much. That should save on something.
  9. If I have the driveshaft out of a 95 caprice cop car, would it be worthwhile to save it for making the custom driveshaft? The tranny was a 4l60e, and I'm going with the t-56. So are the yoke ends the same for the 2 tranny's(I guess that's the real question). Thank you for your time. P.S.-update- I've got the motor pulled, trannys out, along with the driveshaft. Harness is siting in the car, and that won't be anything to remove. Got a t-56 on the way from TX. Guess things are moving right along.
  10. That's a real bummer. But you do appreciate your z enough to not let it sit around. You want someone else to grow to like it like you do, and that's pretty cool in my book. That is one fine piece of work you did, hope mine comes out that good.
  11. My donor car is a 1995 chevy caprice cop car, and it has a dual fan. But the fans aren't mounted together, and I don't think there is any real shroud. Has anybody been able to get this to work?
  12. I'm in the same boat you are man. I've got a '95 lt1 from a cop car, and I'm going to go the way of the t-56. I was never on fire though. Unfortunatly, it's going into a '79 280zx. It's just a little more work.
  13. Where does the bashing come in? Seems like a cool car to me too.
  14. I got some Fat Mat for my 1948 chevy. At like, 1$ a foot, didn't really see anything better. Especially with Dyna mat at 6$ a foot. I got 100 feet, so math is simple and I saved a butt-ton.
  15. Yeah, I was moving my battery to the back, and thought I had bolted the ground to a good enough spot. Well after about a week of after work troubleshooting I found out it was the new ground cable, but also the old ground cable went at the same time, so when I moved it back, I had the symptoms. Well, we live, we learn.
  16. Wow, thanks for posting that site, I've been thinkning about a way to find the numbers on my V-8 in my '48 chevy. The LT-1 in my cop car is pretty easy to figure out.
  17. Yeah, I'm going to have some real fun getting my '79 to pass smog with the '95 LT1. But that makes it more interesting.
  18. So what your saying is, if I start with the auto tranny, then drop in a t-56, all I have to do is shorten the driveshaft about 4 inchs(for an extra $300)? That doesn't sound to bad. If I go with the auto, the intial install will be easier. I was also thinking of getting an A/C delete pully, and worry about A/C later. It's getting a little cold around here, so I won't need that for awhile. The police crusier I got does have a couple extra coolers for the drivetrain, so maybe I can fit those in there somewhere. Well thanks for the info, that exactly what I was looking for. What shop do you go to Brandonz?
  19. I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me the lengths of a T-56 and the 4l60e. The reason for this is because I'm wondering if someone were to switch between the two(switching over to the T-56), would the old driveshaft still work, or would I have to get a new one. I did a little search, but didn't find anything talking about the different lengths. Thanks for the help.
  20. That sounds awesome man, I can't wait to get mine on the road either. Althought I still have to pull the LT1 out. But thats the fun part:-D
  21. sweet sounding ride man, got a couple people in the office watching and listening when I played it.
  22. Awesome ride man! I'm looking to do the same thing, only with a '95 LT1, and I have to follow CA smog laws(that sucks). What paint are you using? I'm thinking of a sunset metallic orange. A buddy of mine has some corvette side pipes he keeps telling me I should put on my Z, and now seeing them on one.... Although you do have a 2+2, and I don't. But who knows, I like challanges. Can't wait to see your website and find out more about what you did. That's a sweet ride. Keep up the good work.
