  1. Yes it could quite possibly be your ignition switch. Just this morning, I went to go to the store and my zx would not start. After some trial and error, I narrowed my search to the ignition switch. An hour and a half later, with the new ignition switch in place, the car started! Check the switch!!!! No, Replace the switch!!!
  2. There is a hard line that goes from the gas tank to the charcoal canister in the engine bay. Now, if this line is plugged, then the incident you described is quite potential. If your exhaust pipe is too close to your gas tank under the car, causing the gas to "expand" its vapor, more pressure will build up and blow out.
  3. Reading through this thread is absolutely amazing. I am quite impressed with the amount of time and effort this project has acquired! So, when will these heads be in production for the general public?
  4. Make sure you check your alternator. That could cause some of the symptoms your car possesses.
  5. Kurt, your best bet would be to talk to the original builder of your car, those guys up in Oregon. They would know. They built the thing. No sense in guessing when you could just ask the builder. Right?
  6. The big black wire with the white stripe is the coil positive switchable power on from the key. (There is a blue wire that is on the negative side). That black wire needs 12 volts for the coil to work. The other dilemma could be the little black box that hangs on the side of the distributor. This is the igniter box. If that is fried, your engine will not run. A trip out to the wrecking yard will solve that problem. New ones are about 300 dollars. There is a little resister that is bolted above the coil. It has a little black wire with a white stripe. The other end of it is a black wire that is grounded to the front bolt of the base of the distributor. Make sure all you grounds are clean and secure. You mentioned "Anyway, I repaired the burnt wires and everything seems OK now except I get no spark. When the wires 1st burnt I replaced one that ran from the coil neg to the chassis. I can't find this on any schematic though. What the heck? " The negative side of the coil is not grounded to the car. The blue negative wire from the coil goes to the black igniter box on the distributor.
  7. This is where you start: First, clean all the wires with "carb and choke" cleaner on a rag. Clean everything! Next, unplug the battery and don't touch it till your done... Next, take the tape off of all the connections and remove the stereo, junker. Look at each individual cut wire and figure out where the other end is and solder them back together while using shrink wrap to cover the exposed wire that you just soldered. When every cut wire looks like it is together with its other half, place the battery wire back on. Try out your lights, and all the other stuff that didn't work. Then go from there. I would highly recommend a wire schematic for your year vehicle. Then trace all the wires to see were they go. Even the unplugged ones in the engine bay. Been there, done that.
  8. Wow! Awesome start. Lots of pictures is what we like. Good luck with your build!
  9. Daaaaannnngggg!!! Now that was a sweeet race! Ok, pardon my ignorance, but who is (was) Clifton? Is there any specs on "his" car besides a 7mg? Very impressive!
  10. Since we are on the subject of efi and afm stuff Braap, what is "your" take or say on replacing the "stock" non-turbo afm with the larger "turbo" afm for an increase in mass air flow? (changing out the circuit board in the turbo afm for the non-turbo circuit board and going from there?) If, of course, this has been discussed elsewhere, give me the link. But I want to know "your" opinion because you have a well spring of information I haven't acquired just yet. Thanks

The black wire with the white stripe is the 12 volt positive that goes to the coil positive side. It should be switched on when the key is turned to the on position. The negative goes to the distributor. Try placing the stock coil back in and hook the wires up the way the factory had it to see if the problem persists.
  12. You try it! Tell us how it goes. Only "time" will tell, not derogatory remarks on ones world view about another's progress.
  13. Ask Nelsonian to make you a set. Looks like a good quality job. Maybe I'll ask?
  14. What I have done in the past is to take everything out of the interior of the car, including the passenger seat. Then start placing the panels back one at a time after either reupholstering the panel or making a new one. Dynamat works the best but it is a little pricey. Anything that absorbs sound, including carpet, makes a difference in sound deadening quality.

You could do either. I have, in the past, capped off the lines at the block. It saves space and it looks better too. If you aren't using the heater, there is no need for the hoses either.
  16. Oooh, that looks good! Post more progress pics as time permits!
  17. Yeah, post some pics as the process is flowing.
  18. Any Nissan power seat should work but they seem to be wide and the z-car is narrow. So, fitting issues have to be resolved.
  19. Screw down the little white-ish plastic nut on the rod handle, then lift up on the outside door handle. If that doesn't work, use a long screw driver and push down on the flat metal where the plastic from the door handle sits and push on the inside of the door/pull from the outside as you are pushing down on that metal. Oh, make sure your door is not in the locked position.

280zx engine and brakes work well in a 240-280. ZX struts are the best platform because they will adapt almost any larger brake kit out there. 80 dollars from the wrecking yard, and walaahhh.
  21. The best spot would be a switchable power from any wire the key turns on and off.

Black works with everything. My seats were blue. Now they are black. You would not know the difference.
  23. A original unit works good when it is rebuilt. It costs about the same and fits perfect.
