  1. It sucks to hear that Cygnusx1.

It doesn't seem any better over here on the left coast. I count my blessings that I'm still employed (for now).

At least you can spend spend more time with your kid now...

  2. Anyone in or around Portland, OR who is between the ages of 16-20, male or female want to hang out with our Z's?

In about a month, Skib will turn 21. That just leaves the Cheg brothers (and Soundmasterg who still considers himself a "youngin" ;))

  3. I have a Toyota 4x4 turbo and the sender went out. :(

The Haynes manual says anything above 4.3 psi at idle is fine, @3000 RPM, 36-71 psi. I hooked up a mechanical pressure gage and I'm at 40 psi at idle...

I know it is a different engine, but they can't be that far off (I would think). I can't find any minimum oil pressure specs in either of my Datsun Haynes manuals.

    Hope this helps Peter! -hughdogz

  4. Hughdogz- first, your ZX-T is to DIE for Its the most B****n ZX i've seen!!!

Hey, thanks for the props thetremendoustim. But, I think there are a lot more badass ZX's than mine.

Take a look at JeffP, Bernardd, Warren, Rossman or Guy80LT1 just to name a few... I still have a long way to go to catch up to them (and I may never be able to do that, but I'll keep trying )

  5. I have the same Lincoln kit. Don't forget to reverse the polarity. Buy an extra spool of wire to practice with. Keep the hose straight. After some practice, the welds will turn out pretty nice.

    Good Luck!

Doh! That's what I didn't do . I'll read up in my manual and online to see if reversing the polarity is required (you're probably right though).

I need to weld a -6AN bung to my upper thermostat housing soon...hopefully it will turn out okay.

Nismopick, yes it was homemade. I shortened a wand to ~3 feet and there was no "birds nest" from the aluminum spool.

  6. I finally got the damper honed out. I took it to Dan Hutchkins (one of Portland's premiere engine builders). He used a mic on the crank snout:

Crank snout diameter: 1.3772" (~34.9809 mm)

I asked that he make it between 3 and 8 tenths of a thousandths under. He made it six tenths of a thou under.

He had to take 1.1 thousandths out (0.0011 inch).

In his shop, he had a V-8 big block made of a piece of billet Aluminum!! He said it cost ~8 grand.

  7. Makes me squirm when I see not only a cellphone, but a little yapper dog on their lap or steering wheel! How do they even turn the wheel?

I'm not sure if I recall correctly, but I think one time I saw cell phone + yapper dog + smoking a cigarette.

  8. My plan for making this thing is to create a center mark and then draw a series if of concentric circles on the plywood to eyeball the object being measured to center. It's not perfect, but It will get us close.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

    Hugh,

I was thinking about making this thing out of guitar wire. Reason being is that both of us would have the same materials readily available to us. For example we could use the high E string of Ernie Ball electric guitar strings. That pretty much narrows it down to a tightly controlled diameter/composition of wire to eliminate that as a variable for mass.

I was thinking of getting some small diameter wire rope from home depot, and hook "eyes". Maybe even get some crims to make loops at the ends of the wire ropes. We could definitely consider using a guitar string that is ~0.009" diameter, but those aren't that long and may not "swing" as long as longer wires...

I'm going to hang mine in the garage (not my living room). I only need to make one mark for zero, and one mark for ~10 degrees and I can probably use a thumbtack.

We can probably "normalize" any difference in size / weight of the plate by subtracting the empty plate time from the time recorded with an object.

I've never seen one of these made or in operation either...but in theory it should work great.

I really want to try this design and I think it is the best so far. Plus, Tony D's or Cygnusx's ideas don't involve "a laser"
