  1. Tony, he said the big end. He ALWAYS has the ends resized after torquing on the caps. LOL that leads us back to one of my questions I had earlier about the plastgage eh?
  2. I just spoke with a competent friend of mine who mentioned when I bought up I bought ARP rod bolts for my L28ET that I would need to have my rods resized. When I got to the machine shop shortly thereafter the manager said in some cases this is true. My friend primarily builds high performance small and big block V8's. The machinist at the machine shop also said they need to be resized. Do I need to put on all the rod caps, torque to spec and then take them in to be resized?
  3. Sorry to bring up an old topic but I am about to venture down this path, and I want to make sure I understand everything. If I plastigage the rods and mains and I am using ARP fasteners, I should just torque each cap to the recommended value ONCE, and then back off the fasteners and cap and check the tolerances? Or torque it as many times as they recommend as if I was doing finally assembly for checking with a plastigage?
  4. So what should I do then? The headsaver, which I have not found or the shims? If the shop took off .015 and it had been decked before doesn't the head saver take care of all of my problems?
  5. Completely different set of rockers that are all mixed up that were not originally with the cam I am using. I am ordering new rockers, so that variable is gone correct?
  6. He said they took of 15 thousandths, he thought it was close to 20 overall from new.
  7. Well I finally got lucky and got a good cylinder head back from the shop with a new valve job. The cam checked out to be ok. I did not have them resurface the rockers arms, is this a big deal? I have the "How to Rebuild your OHC Datsun Engine" and plan on freshening up on the cylinder head section this evening. The shop had to take 15 thousandths off the head, which I believe puts you right on the edge of needing shims, but they felt it may have been milled before, they don't know how much. How should I go about ordering cam tower shims? Any and all advice would be great.
  8. Sorry to hijack. What if you want to plastigauge the rods and mains when re assembling? You wouldn't want to throw away your new arp fasteners just from checking bearing clearances would you? I was going to reuse the bolts for the rods and mains, and go with new OE or arp head bolts. Should I not reuse the old fasteners for the bottom end?
  9. Should have mentioned this is for a L28ET swap. Please take that into consideration on compression ratio
  10. How thick will my cam tower shims be? Any other suggestions? How will this effect using my stock ECU because of the compression change?
  11. Should I use or which alternator is preferred on the L28ET swap to a 77? Keep the externally regulated or make the change to the internally? Not a big wire snipper, like to keep things as close to original as possible incase I or a future owner want to ever got back to the original engine.
  12. Ok I took off the adapter. Does that or should that freeze plug come out? What do I do to thread the oil filter on to the block now?
  13. Speaking of which do I need to run an oil cooler? Do most guys run an oil cooler? I can't see Nissans theory on why a car with a manual trans didn't get one and automatics did, if anything manual cars were going to be ragged on harder and should have got the coolers.
  14. Ok so I ordered the AT Oil Pump and I am using it my car that is a manual, won't hurt anything correct?
  15. I ordered a oil pump today for my turbo motor build. It asked whether or not the car was a AT or MT. The donor car was an AT, but it is going in my MT 280z. What in the hell is the difference anyhow? I went with the AT part number.
  16. I am going to order an engine gasket kit for my stock turbo engine rebuild. Is there a part number difference between the two head gaskets? If I order a felpro gasket kit for a 1983 280zx turbo am I going to get the correct head gasket? Seems many guys don't have problems with the fel pro? Boost will be around 11 or 12
  17. Anyone use pipe as small as 2"? Anyone see this ebay intercooler as having everything (correct bends, etc.) for L28ET S30 swap? http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-2-SILVER-PIPING-TURBO-FMIC-INTERCOOLER-KIT-/150823688691?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item231dcad9f3&vxp=mtr
  18. From Tony D at zcars.com Taken verbatim. ANY Datsun engine can be TURBOCHARGED WITHOUT CHANGING THE PISTONS. Jeebus guys, SHUT UP ABOUT DISHED PISTONS! SniperX is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! At 7psi the 'lower compression' does NOT even REMOTELY come into the picture. As for SniperX being used to 'MAP Based Vehicles' I'd suggest you search on "Megasquirt" and use THAT as your ECU right from the get-go on the conversion. They are available for $400 from a number of sources, and give you full adjustability. Matter of fact, I'd say with stock turbo injectors in the block and a Megasquirt, you will easily be able to run 10-12psi of boost on your conversion without an Intercooler simply because you can douse the cylinders in extra fuel to compensate for the lack od density. Having had a NON-DISH TOP N/A conversion for 23 years, and putting 40K+ miles on it running normal boost at 12psi, and up to 21psi (WITHOUT DISH TOPS) it just maddens me when PARROTS spout and confuse people. IF YOU DON'T KNOW, SHUT UP! ARGH!
  19. I just talked to my machine shop. A few day ago they said there were some corroded spots on the head (on the deck and around the thermostat) so they tig welded some of the spots up. I just called for an update and they said that when checking it they could easily poke holes into some of the water jackets by the valve springs in the head because the head was ate up from by anti freeze management by previous owners of the car. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Now what should I do? I can't use any other N/A head with the 280zx turbo can I with the stock ecu? I am mentioned it 1000 times but my mods were going to be RRFPR, intercooler, exhaust and raised boost to 11 psi or so using the stock injectors, turbo, ecu etc. This really sucks.
  20. From Exedy site. Thought non turbos were 225mm flywheel? Can I use my 280z flywheel or do I need 240mm? Disc Outer Diameter 240mm Spline Teeth / Major Diameter 24T / 25.6 mm This Part Number Fits: NISSAN 06801A 1987 - 1988 200SX BASE V6; 3L; Non-Turbo; Gas(VG30E) 06801A 1975 - 1978 280Z 2+2 L6; 2.8L; Non-Turbo; Gas(L28E) 06801A 1979 - 1983 280ZX 2+2 L6; 2.8L; Non-Turbo; Gas(L28E; L28ET) 06801A 1979 - 1983 280ZX 2+2 L6; 2.8L; Turbo; Gas(L28E; L28ET) 06801A 1981 - 1981 280ZX 2+2 GL L6; 2.8L; Non-Turbo; Gas(L28E) 06801A 1982 - 1983 280ZX BASE L6; 2.8L; Turbo; Gas(L28ET)
  21. Don't have any O2 right now.
  22. Should I plan on using an OE o2 sensor or a wideband for my 280zxt swap in to my 77? I using the factory ecu with a Bell RRFPR, stock injectors, FMIC and exhaust. Thanks.
  23. Do to the overwhelming response I get to all of my answers on here I thought I would inform you that looking on RockAuto.com Most if all not all parts when looking under a 1982 280zx turbo or NA valve train parts are the same. Since I have hydraulic head and I am converting to lash adjustment I feel confident you can use parts off any L28 on a lash adjustment turbo head.
