  1. question: Is a J30 ECU the same as a 300ZXTT ecu? I figure the J30 is the same as an N/A VG30DE ECU, but how different are those boxes than the TT version? Just missing the boost control? is that software or hardware? Is the ECU rigged for these controls and just not wired or are they not there altogether?
  2. thats no way to get proper readings. you should basically take those readings and throw them out. a starter spins at around 225 to 250rpm, you were maybe doing 10. If you were to go by those readings, Id just look at #2, as all of the other ones are fairly close. I bet #2 just has some gunk in the ring lands. These motors are tough. I wouldnt even bother with new rings or bearings unless they dont spec out as per a shop manual.
  3. saw your posts about the new 280zx with the kaminara body kit... just want to give you props... that a nice car... i want that body kit... lol... congrats anyways...

  4. Ive heard those Z32 transmissions referred to as "rock crushers" (just like the old M22s!) in certain circles, if that gives you any inkling of where that 20HP went. better safe than sorry with a case full of gear soup.
  5. Bernardd>>>Ive got my blue and silver 2+2 that I plan on fitting the kit to. and keeping the blue/silver 2 tone. Tony>>> I want to make copies of the kit on the red 280ZX that I posted pictures of. Im working on buying a house, so when that comes through, I should be able to really tackle this project, If I get one with the kind of garage space I want, HA ha!
  6. according to that link, the VQ20 through vq30 all use the same stroke (73.3mm), except the 23, which has a 69mm stroke.
  7. If you can find a VQ23DE (it actually exists in asian markets), the crank has a 69MM throw.
  8. Ive got almost the same set-up as ezzzzzzz. excapt Im running an 18" glaspack for a resonator, but have the 2.5" magnaflow straight through and 2.5" mandrel bends on my 280ZX. Its an L28 with 11.5:1 compression, a 260Z 256* cam and some mild head work and a 60mm TB. quiet for cruising, will set off car alarms when I open it up. sounds nice and low too, not all fart-cann-y.
  9. If you can find pics of the electramotive 280ZX race cars engine from the early to mid 80's, htat engine was almost on its side, it was tilted so far. I beleive THEY did it for a better, lower center of gravity as well as allowing room for long intake runners and a completely awesome bundle of snakes looking equal length runner turbo header.
  10. room for the intake manifold. you'll notice most inline motors are canted to allow as long as possible intake runners. the RB series motors are tilted the OTHER way, as the intake is on the side of the motor that holds the spark plugs on an L motor. same with KA's, they are tilted towards the drivers side as well.
  11. well, if you pull the harness and ECU out and feed it through the dash, it is attached to the engine. Id try to get him to throw everything in for $400. USUALLY, at U pull it type yards, they will sell you everything, valve cover to oil pan, including the harness and ECU for their "complete engine" price. at least the U pull it yards I go to they do.
  12. Im going to go ahead and say, that aside from the cost and space aspect, it wont work on our engines because they are liquid cooled. If you start drilling into our heads to try and stuff another sparkplug in there, chances are you will hit a coolant flow passage.
  13. screw the honda engine, if you want a light weight, motorcycle V4, look into a Yamaha Vmax engine. the current iteration is rated at almost 200HP without any super or turbo charger.
  14. SS MLS tomei for $275? I was looking for some stuff on the good old internet the other day and ran across this site! they have 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5mm thicknesses in a 90.5mm bore. Ive never herd of the company that distributes them state side, anyone else heard of them before> good? bad? otherwise?
  15. You know, I actually had az 2jz turbo up and running in a MKIII with MSII using stock sensors and stock COP. They drove the damn thing onto the trailer, took it to another shop for some other work, and then they screwed up something feirce on the MSII or the harness to the point where it wouldnt fire and yanked it to go AEM. Idiots. MSII isnt that hard to install, just takes a little patience. Not plug and play, but also about 1/4 the price of even the cheapest "brand name" EMS.
  16. megasquirtII. with the extra code and the high res injector code, I think it would meet your requirements.
  17. I will be taking the kit off and parting hte car. the reason the rust doesnt look so bad is because its all hidden underneath the fiberglass body kit peices. the floors are trashed, so are the frame rails. If the car had the optional turbo kit and wasnt an auto, it might be worth saving, but with the rust being as bad as it is, I just cant see saving the car. Its life will not have been in vain tho, as it has LOTS of usable parts besides the body kit! such as an original UNCRACKED red dash!
  18. there was no animosity in my post either. The way Tony worded his post, it seemed as though he was inferring that he had already considered this possibility and new it would fit, but chose not to share this information with anyone else. But now that he has clarified that he had considered it, but never actually checked it out, the situation has been rectified. THe KA head option was appealing because most (almost all) of the coolant passages and oil passages line up.
  19. yeah, I never found anything newer than late 80s for mercedes engines in the junkyard. It had always been the rumor that the mid 70s models were the ones that fit. Which is not true. VERY good work, MAG! Ive been to the Upullit in indy (my friend lives in noblesville) and they get crazy new cars in there!! they had 2 G35s when I was there!!! And TonyD, are you saying that YOU knew about this head fitting on an L serties block?
  20. here are some pics and a link to my photobucket album with more...... here is the link to the album
  21. dont know if youd be interested, but I just bought a 280ZX witha widebody kit on it and I was thinking about making molds of the kit and maybe reproducing them if there is enough interest. my thread
  22. well, I got the car back to minnesota safe and sound. Ill get some pics of it this weekend. WHen I get a house Ill start to strip it and take off the kit. I think Im going to make molds of all the pieces. can anyone give me a link or a website that would have some good advice on how to make molds for producing fiberglass parts?
  23. this has nothign to do with diesels, but I have an HE351VE and it is massive. Its going on my gas engine in my 280ZX if the head ever gets done. here is a good read on the HE351VE turbo as well as some alternate methods of control. lots of pics too!
