  1. yes, there is. searching ebay by 240z or 280z gives those results. they're pretty much always there, but this is the last set of hp's i'll need or i would go the ebay route. granted, i could get the fronts for just a little bit more, i simply don't need them. i'll be going to coilovers soon on my 240 and will end up with a complete set of basically new 240 hp's left over...

illuminas are listed for a great deal under the same search, as well.

  2. sorry for the late reply. i've had jury duty all week and into next week.

i mounted my bar to the rear suspension, but only slid one endlink bolt through the bottom bushing and through the bar. even with shortening the endlinks, it appeared there was potential for interference. i would prefer to install a bar that is mounted in the front and not have to worry about it. a friend of mine recently did the same conversion on his '71 and didn't reinstall his rear-mounted bar for the same reason. if i get a chance, i will attempt to remount it in the next week or so.

i took a pic of the same friend's early '74 260Z over the weekend:

    early_260_stock_bar.jpg

as opposed to the other pics i took, this pic was taken while kneeling down next to the driver's side rear tire. the uprights on the early 260Z were in the same location and orientation as on my '73 240. so Nigel, it makes sense that a 260 bar would work fine on a 240, given that the bar is shaped such that it curves around the front control arm bushing bolts of the rear suspension assemblies. the only problem is that this is a rare bar and my friend won't let his go.

so... um... anyone got... a spare 260 bar that looks like the one above?

  3. I think you guys are confusing the two different rear anti-roll bar mounting styles that ST sells. For 70 through 73 they sell a rear bar that mounts to the transverse link mount braces and for 74 and later car they sell a rear bar that mounts to the factory mounts on the chassis in front of the diff.

The rear mounting style has better angles and is more effective. It can also be used on the 74 and later cars.

no, i'm aware of the different styles of bars that suspension techniques sells and what those differences are. i have heard of others claiming that the 280 kit's rear bar would fit on a '73 240, and upon visual inspection and noting that the mounts were there for the rear bar to go in front of the control arms, i thought that it would fit as others have said.

i originally put an aftermarket bar (i believe it's an addco bar) on my '73 that mounted behind the diff. since updating my stock u-jointed half-shafts to the z31 cv's, i can't use that bar due to interference between the end links and the cv's. it appeared that a front-mounted bar wouldn't interfere with the cv's. i was planning to put the bar i took off my '73 on my '78 and then putting the new 280 bar on my 240. no dice.

i've heard from numerous people that the 280 kit rear bar will fit on a '73. i'm just trying to point out that it's not a direct bolt on in my case. i'll probably relocate the mounts, moving them to be in the same location as they are on a 280, to get the 280 bar to fit on my car.

  4. NO on the BMW Steel grey.. cuz i have that on my Z.. :)

hmm, that's what color i'm going to have my '78 280 painted. my 240 is painted bmw titanium silver, and had the tail light surrounds and the front fairlady grill painted the bmw steel grey. i liked the color so much it's going on the 280. bmw colors are great8-) my suggestion would be a silver or dark blue color.

  5. interesting, indeed. i'm not saying they weren't on your parts car, but there is no way that the suspension techniques rear bar will fit on my '73 car as the bar and the mounts currently are. here is what the mounts look like on my '73:

here is what the suspension techniques 280 bar looks like:

here is what my dirty '78 280, with the stock bar still installed, looks like (my '76 is the same):

i'll look at my friend's '74 260 this weekend. i took pics of the '73 and the '78 cars while laying next to the passenger side rear wheel of each car. you can easily see that the mount of the 240 is in a different location, further to the rear of the car. it's even oriented in a different direction.

the only way it would fit on my '73, such that it will clear the control arm bushing bolts, is either:

if it were shaped like this crude ms paint edit suggests...

    280_susptech_rear_edit.jpg

or by relocating the mounts to be where they sit on the later cars.

  6. 280 bars are bigger, but only the 73 240 have the factory sway bar mounts IME. If you have an earlier car you need the uprights which is why the smaller bar kit is more expensive. But the cars are lighter. If you have a 73, best thing to do for the $ is just bolt on the 280 bars.

yes, that's correct on the '73 being the only 240 with factory rear sway bar mounts. however, i ordered the 280 kit for my '73 right after finding that price with summit racing. unfortunately, the rear bar 280 sway bar won't work on the '73. while technically the mounts are there, they are in the wrong location. the front inner control arm bushing bolts are right where the bar needs to be. i was hoping to use this bar since i had to remove my 240 sway bar when i converted to the z31 cv's.

i compared to my '78 and '76 280's, which the bars easily fit, and noted the difference in location of the sway bar mounts. i have heard of someone using the rear s/t 280 bar on a '74 260, though, and will be verifying that this weekend. i'll try to take some pics to show the differences in mounting locations.

    these bars are huge...

  7. Best price I can get is $279 my cost if I buy 5 sets. The prices you guys are getting from Summit is below what I can purchase them for. Of course' date=' ST offered to sell me the sets at $249 if I do a $10,000 jobber buy in. :confused2

The part number you want is: 52095 and comes with everything you need for installation.[/quote']

Thanks for looking into getting us a better deal, John.

I just called summit and they are on backorder for at least 4 weeks on the 52095 kit. Their price, btw, is $239.95. Shipping is free, handling is $8.95. One of the online options had an outrageous shipping price of around $80. shox.com wanted around $35 for ups ground shipping.

Summit, however, does have the 280 kit (p/n 52100) in stock and on the shelf. The 280 kit has a 1 1/8" front bar and a 7/8" rear bar, plus all needed hardware. It's probably overkill for our cars, but it is available now. The price on this one is $235.95... interesting that the bigger bars are $4 cheaper.

  8. it's been a while, but it seems like there was one wingnut on the bottom corner of each gauge, and then a thin flat bar connecting the two gauges themselves. something like:

    .O-O.

where the '.' would be a wingnut

the 'O' would be a gauge

and the '-' would be the bar connecting them

    sorry if i'm recalling incorrectly.
