First, thanks for all the comments, suggestions, words of encouragement... Second, tailights, i think I'm going to go with ford mustang... as Warren did. He said he will give any input/help he can to help me get it done. It will be a little while on that, but i think thats what i'm going to go with.

LoL Definatly... Also the back from back wheel arch to back of rear quarter is alot longer than the s-30. ALTHOUGH it still looks alot better than the midevil battering ram that was on it to start with. Also the more i look at it... i think I'm going to cut out the part that i tapered off to the rear, and modify the arch so it tapers off toward the bottom of the car, making it look more like the s-30. That area i tapered i think will just look weird ending before the rear of the car, and then having flat smooth look for the last foot lol. SO.. more pics to come once i buy a few more grinding wheels tonight after work.

Blah why does the 280zx have to have that recess in the quarter that makes it so much harder to shave the rear??

I started working on fixing some rust that was on my tail light panel Friday, and being the typical Z owner one thing led to another and um... Yeah... I started cutting stuff up... This is my first major body work project, besides the small patch i did on the tail light panel here is a pic of that before i finished grinding it smooth (today). And here are pics of me starting to shave the rear... This first pic i decided I would need to blend the lower piece in, to make it look better and be a little easier to fab the quarter panel patch up to shave the rear. IDK if i like this look yet, or would rather keep the bottom portion all the way to the rear of the car... And here is a pic of where i traced the patch onto the quarter panel. I cut the patch first, then traced it onto the car so i could cut the car to match the panel... Here is the patch. Im not done grindind the welds down yet but yeah... And shot with primer so it doesnt rust overnight (I dont have a shop do work in my yard) I havent started on the passanger side yet, but it will be the same as the driver, so im not going to post pics of it. I'll post more when i get the back panel welded on.

Yeah, my kid screwed with the settings on the welder, and i didnt realize. That was the last part i welded and he messed with it while i was in getting a drink right before i started that last part. I cant get in to grind it out until i get a dremmel, or some type of attachment for my drill to grind it out and reweld it.

Ok, this is what I worked on off and on the past two days (while i was working on brakes, waiting on parts, waiting on caliper paint to dry etc). This is my first "Complicated" body repair patch, with curves, multiple bends (i used multiple metal welded together instead of bends), etc. Actually this wasn't near as hard as i thought it would be. I know my welding isnt the best, but its getting alot better since I've jumped in and got more practice. I've got to get a Dremmel so i can get in those tight spots, but here are some pics before filler. Pics with body filler to come...

Hmmm... When i made my foam structure for my hoodscoop i glued the foam together with silicon... IDK how the fiberglass would react with it, but just gluing my foam together with it worked great, and i had no reactions that i noticed. The foam stuck to the hood good with silicon also

I own a 280zx... and honestly i would put NOTHING from my car (except rear brake setup) on a 240z. I'd LOVE to have the front end of a 240 on my car however

Yea.. thats kind of where i'm at. I originally wanted to weld the window up completely like my signature pic I had photoshopped, BUT... IDK. Without the other mods it just looks too funny. I believe maybe when I get the other mods done I may go back and look at deleting the window all together like i originally wanted. ALOT less work than trying to retrofit the window. Thanks for the replies guys!

Molding G35 headlight into my headlight bucket?
V8_DatZun replied to CrazyAirborne's topic in Body Kits & Paint
I actually think that looks pretty good. Gives it a modernized look. As stated by previous posters i like the original look better.. but this doesn't look bad at all. -
Cool thanks alot! If you could measure from top to bottom on the end that is closest to the window that would help me out alot! I do not have a 240z quarter window to measure by.

Yes, but how many different ways can you say you want a 280z (260z 240z) window in a 280zx? There are quite a few combinations and sorry if i didnt pick the right wording to be able to pull it up... I'll search again though *edit* Come to think of it i believe the post you are referring to is the one where the OP wanted to put reg 240 windows in his 2+2... which is kind of diferent from what I'm wanting to do. I just need to know if the back of the 280zx window is close enough to the same height of the front of the 240 quarter window and what it will look like visually...

No welding, but still fabricating
V8_DatZun replied to Jesse OBrien's topic in Fabrication / Welding
I've been trying to find a tool to make curved cuts (angle grinder just wont "cut" it hah). I was tempted to try something like that rotozip... glad you posted your results. -

Got to start some where. You're on the right track. Start small and work your way up. You're right... you own a Z.. it WILL get out of hand fairly quickly. -
That has t-tops also.. Which kind of worries me about doing this project now. BUT I dont see why it would do that if it was properly welded ALL the way around, and maybe if i do it, i need to weld a panel inside also, just to help strengthen that area... *BTW thanks for that pic...

Can someone let me know if a 240z type quarter window will mate up correctly to the back of the 280zx window? (are they the same height). Also could someone please photoshop this for me so i can see what it would look like? Thanks in advance. I'm debating doing this just because i HATE the 280zx windows. Also I'm debating welding it up like on my Signature picture. The only problem I see in this is my zx has t-tops.... so the window couldnt fit flush with the zx window due to structural issues....
-
Thanks for everyones comments/suggestions. After reading the comment from Mike_Kz.. let me ask this question. Does anyone know if the 280zx window is the same height as a 280z or 240z? Could anyone possibly try and photoedit a 240-280z quarter window into a 280zx? LoL You can see where this is going... thanks..
-
Yeah, thats one thing i noticed. It definitely has to have that curve to it that my signature has. that will make it all flow together better. Also, with the rest of the mods, that my signature has, i think it will all go together good. Ill keep playing with it.

I was debating if i wanted a pantera hatch or not.. If i do remove the quarter windows a pantera hatch would DEFINATLY look great on it... Thanks for the comments/suggestions keep them coming. This is a big decision for me, and if i do it and i end up not liking it... I'm kinda screwed lol.

LOL After reading this thread my only question is... WHAT WAS YOUR WIFE DOING SEARCHING GUYS PROFILES???? I mean... if she wasnt doing that, she never would have found your profile correct?

Here it is taped up and photo edited. Not too bad, but i may still add Mustang louvers to the sides... see what it looks like photo edited in...

Good idea. I'll try that, and post pics. Thanks. It's been raining here all week, and i dont have a closed in shop due to renting. i'll try that soon as it clears up though. Thanks again.
-
agreed.. When i first thought of this, SteelToad (user on here) was already working on this. He made a different shaped window though, and i believe he had a body shop do it, so he might not know exactly how they did it. If it ends up looking like the photoshop in my signature does... then it'll look GREAT. I'll probably mock it up with cardboard first, and primer it to see how it actually looks. Thanks for that tip.

Ok here's the deal. I plan on deleting my quarter windows, and either keeping them smooth, or adding Mustang (or equivalent) side louvers (to hide my pen camera for in dash screens for side mirror replacements). Here is what it looks like with the ugly chrome covers removed... Now my question is what will be the best way of going about this? Cut one complete piece.. and end it just shy of the regular metal (before window in door) that way i can feather it into the existing metal, or what would be my best bet?
