  1. Hey Miles I have asked this question before but got no answer. If you use the MSA conversion kit can you use a regualar size air cleaner (hood clearance) and can you use a strut bar? This is really the only thing that keeps me from buying the MSA kit. Come on man I gotsta know
  2. Lord Help us! That's one bad A$$ Zeeee!
  3. Coool I will have to consider doing that. If I decide to go electrical with the auto meters and use the chevy sending units can I run the wires through the datsun fuse box or should I just use an inline fuse? I guess what I'm getting around to asking is would it be easier to get a painless wiring kit for my car and discard the old datsun harness? It just seems like it will be a pita trying to figure out what I need to keep what I don't and so forth. Thanks in advance guys. (((If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm afraid of the wiring monster!)))
  4. Thanks Pete, That's what I was kinda wondering about. It seems that would be the easiest thing to do and not worry about having to trace down all of these wires. I aready have the fuel gauge (auto meter pro comp ultra lite) and will be ordering the rest of them some time in the near future. Another thing that would make wiring the gauges easy would be to just by the correct auto meter gauge for the block you were running. I know the JTR book says something about fabricating an old chrysler swith and drilling out this and drilling out that just so you can hook up the Datsun gauges. Yeah I'm kinda like you when it comes to the clock issue, my new stereo should take care of that problem, and I saw the digital volt meter on hybrid just the other day. Ah lots of choices to choose from. PS. How exactly does the mechanical gauge work? I would assume by the term mechanical that it doesn't use a sending unit? Is this right?
  5. Hi John and welcome aboard, Try these two places: Motorsports Auto 1-800-633-6331 www.zcarparts.com Victoria British 1-800-255-0088 www.victoriabritish.com John both of these places have free catalogs that are full of Z parts. You could almost build a Z from thier catalogs. Hope this helps you out.
  6. Hi Zach, T Zee is right those tar floor covers come up pretty nice with an air chisel. I set mine on a low setting and went to work. I was surprised at the amount of the rust I found lurking under some this stuff. Over the years it actually separated from the floor pan enough to let water get trapped underneath in places. I also used a hammer and a big paint scraper when I first started this job and it worked fairly well though not as quickly as the air tool. BTW make sure you wear safety glasses while doing this. I would be blind in one eye right now if I hadn't been wearing them. A piece of this stuff flew at my face so fast I thought it was going to break my safety glasses! Good luck on your project.
  7. Woooohooooooo jumpin jimmney crickets my old z looks good dressed in black! I have new pics at my web site including some blasts from the past my 2 old ZX's and Hooters girls!
  8. Hi guys, today as I sat on a little stool in front of my Z trying to do what the good book (JTR manual) says in regards to separating the wiring harness it dawned on me that I will be using aftermarket gauges. Now the question I have is this, will I be able to use the old wiring for the new gauges or am I going to have to run another wire instead? Also something that has been bothering me about the JTR manual is that it is geared more towards the 240 than the 280. There are more than a few pics in there that only show how to do it on the 240. It makes reference to the gobs of relays and wires that you will not need with the 280 but doesn't bother telling you which ones to disgard. Any help would be appeciated.
  9. I have a simple solution, just use the 280Z instead of the 240Z and dont worry about having to change the R180. 280's rule woooooooohooooooooooo! (((especially $100 280's))) Just kidding I know a lot of folks really prefer the 240 over the 280, just food for thought. Hey doesn't it say in the JTR manual that the R180 is positioned slightly more forward than the R200? This would mean that if you changed it out for the R200 you would have a slight difference in the drive shaft length requirements wouldn't ya? huh huh wouldn't ya??
  10. Email address: flatfoot47@hotmail.com Yep Brad Man I had heard a while back that Z car atlanta was getting short on the older z car parts. When I went there I was looking for ZX stuff. I do want to go back though it's just cool as all h311 to see a salvage yard full of Z's
  11. Yep, I will be taking some today and will probably replace the poor ole Z car in the weeds photo on my posts lol. You can also click on my home page icon to see some pics. Again thanks for the info
  12. I went out and bought me some cool DP90LF today and sprayed my right front fender and door with the stuff. All I can say is wow! That stuff lays down like satin! Tomorrow I will tackle that "green stuff" that covers nearly the whole back half of my Z. I have to say that I am very impressed with the way the DP90 looks, so much so that I will be happy and content to just have that as a paint job for a while. Thanks for the reccomendation
  13. Hi Denny, I looked all over the place for my old GA. Z club news letters, I had a ton of them, they had the Z Car Atlanta address and phone number. I could not find them but I did do a web address search and came up with this address and phone number: Z Car Atlanta 6404 Buford Hwy. N.E. Atlanta, GA. 30340 (770) 446-1090 I hope this helps you out
  14. Thanks Jim, Believe it or not I am just getting in from the garage after working most of the day on the Z. I went ahead and ordered me a new heater core for about $79 and some change from Victoria British. They were the cheapest I found. I got prices from the low $79 Vic Brit core to the high $150 Auto Zone core. Go figure. I had one of these puppies go out on me in the middle of the winter in my last ZX I owned. Spewed steaming hot anti freeze and water all over the interior. Not pretty. I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet and get a new one. The JTR book doesn't say anything about having to use a chevy heater core so I should be ok. One thing I cant find anywhere though is the two heater hose metal pipes that come out of the firewall in the engine compartment. Every place I call tells me that these bad boys are not in production anymore Mine are a litte corroded.
  15. Ray, I checked with a sorta local Z freak mechanic who has about a zillion Z's sitting around his shop and he advised me that it would be very difficult to get a good fender with no rust from any salvage yard including his. I have also checked myself at a few of the local j-yards and have not found the good fenders. They all have huge dents or they are rusted out in the lower part of the fender. I know that they make a repair panel for this part, but then I would have to pay someone to do the work. I have a wire welder but would never attempt something like this due to my terrible welding ventures so far So to sum it all up, yes I have been looking and looking hard this is the 3rd Z/ZX I have owned so I am very familar with the j-yard scene. Thanks PS. There is a place called Z-Car Atlanta that I haven't been to in a long time, I may give them a holler today and see if they can help, it is a Z car junk yard full of all models of Zssssssssss My nipples get hard just walking through the place lol
  16. See next message, i screwed this one up
  17. Cool! Thanks for the web address, I will call them when they wake up and open thier business Since they are on the left coast and I am on the right. Do these fenders have all the necessary holes for side marker lights and emblems? This is one of the things I will be asking them. Oh and by the way I went to the Arizona Z car site and got all giddy about the twin turbo hood with the functioning air ducts only to find out that they are not making them anymore Oh well back to the drawing board. That would be one sweet hood to have, made me forget all about the cowl induction hood that I so coveted.
  18. Hey guys, I have my dash out of my 75Z and you know that while it's out I should do a good inspection on the Heater core and related hardware such as the small rubber hoses and what not. I have a couple of questions, how do I check to see if I need a new heater core (the car is not running and I have the old one out already)? Will the Datsun unit work ok with the chevy tree-fitty? (i am assuming that it will) Thanks
  19. Both of my front fenders on my Z need to be replaced. I looked in the Vic Brit cat and saw that they would be about $149.00 ea. and thought this was going to be a better deal than MSA (thiers list for about $240.00ea.). Then I read the fine print on the VB fenders and saw that there would be an $80.00 shipping fee added to the fenders!!! Wow Has anyone ever bought any fenders from either of these guys and is there another company ((besides Arizona Z car)) out there who sells the 280 fenders? Oh by the way I would love to maybe get my hands on a pre fab cowl induction hood for my Z too if anyone knows of a company who does this. Thanks in advance guys.
  20. David, I am with you bro on the fabrication skills! If I had the know how to make my own parts wooohoooo what a blast that would be. In the real world though I will probably go with the motorsports conversion. You are exactly right about the techs at msa being helpful, i do not know about the jtr guys. One question that I was wondering, can you run a full size air cleaner with the msa set up and can you run a strut bar? Is there enough room uner the hood for these? Oh one more thing, I saw and stopped a guy here in town with a "home made" 78Z v-8 conversion. It had a 307 sbc in it but the "home made" engine mounts looked like hell! I can't complain about his car though, sigh, at least his is running
  21. Inzane, If I am correct I do not think that a ZX tranny will bolt up to the older Z. Yes they are both Datsun/Nissan inline sixes but I seem to remember someone telling me that the late model tranny would not work with the older engines because of the bell housing bolt patterns being different. The reason I say this is because before I decided to go V-8 with my 75 Z, I was thinking of replacing the worn out old 4-speed with a ZX 5-speed and was told that it wouldn't work. Maybe someone else who has more knowledge than I will chime in. Hope this helped.
  22. Had to take a break from sanding on my Z so I thought I would come in grab a cold Dr. Pepper, and look at some of the member sites to get me motivated to head back out into the garage to eat more dust. Ok I think I'm ready to go back now. You know that you have it bad when you take two weeks vacation and spend it sanding, welding, painting and yes cursing at an old Z car!
  23. Ah yes Owen that is one bad a$$ looking Z! Even dressed in the black epoxy! Those lights look awesome on the side of the Z! Are you going to keep the original side markers or are you going to fill in the hole with something?
