After deciding to get the LC-1 wideband unit I decided that I wanted one programmable output to run megasquirt and the other programmable output to run a gauge. It turned out very useful to have a fulltime AFR gauge when Nelson took the turbo 240z 1500 miles and the fuel filter clogged up. It was easy to see the car was starting to lean out. The most popular option is to use a narrowband gauge which expects a 0volt to 1 volt input. So you set up the LC-1 to output a 0-1v signal and your set. Except that you only have an LED bar or LED circle type gauge. You can buy a digital voltmeter gauge and have a readout in digits, but it just didn't satisfy me. So I ordered some parts last night to build a 3 digit AFR display very similar to the LD02 from techedge. I have schematics for the LD01 display, but they no longer sell it and I'm not sure how the LD02 is built, but from reading their site they changed the LD02 to use RS232 communications with the wideband computer. The LD01 display used a microprocessor, but I didn't want to monkey with code writing and programming. The part I ordered is a dedicated analog to digital converter that drives 3 digit displays. I don't want to get everyones hopes up yet until I get it built, but initially it looks like I could build 3 digit displays with enclosures for less than $30, depending on how elaborate the enclosure is. These would work with any wideband that has programmable outputs like the LC-1. I'll keep everyone updated and post some pics when I get the parts in. you can look at the LD02 on http://www.wbo2.com

IMO you go to a dyno and you change timing to increase power, and of course you'll always be watching for detonation to occur. If you advance timing right up until you get detonation (and there are various ways to detect that) then you back off "x" amount. x being how much safety zone do you want. If it is a track only car I think you run small safety zone. Daily driver on pump gas you run a bigger zone. So now you are down to the real heart of tuning the engine and answering these type of questions: How do I detect detonation when tuning? What safety buffer do I want? What fuel will I run? Is it worth the extra power to chance blowing pistons and Head gaskets? How is the environment going to change tuning day to day? This is what makes it all fun. BTW, you are running a few degrees more timing under boost than I did. The question, which has been debated a million times on here is pulling timing and running more boost better? I can look up the link, but I'm pretty sure the consensus was "you will make more power with less timing and more boost"

I meant a relay for power to the megasquirt. So basically a run/start wire that goes hot when the key is in run or start position would turn on the relay providing power to megasquirt. The realy board for megasquirt provides this feature, but it would be easy to add in if you don't have the realy board. You could look at the relay board schematics to see how it is wired. hope that helps

I am working on a 34 pontiac, I call it a hot rod, not a rat rod, but it will be a driver for sure http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=106528

I hope you bought enough for everyone.

Wideband ... do I need the LC1? or just the Bosch Wideband O2?
mobythevan replied to proxlamus©'s topic in MegaSquirt
Yeah, that is what I will be using. The LC-1 will put out a 0-5v for MSnS and it will also put out a 0-1v to use a NB gauge simulataneously. -
Switched power should be run AND start I would put a relay in for power

My plan was just to go the digital voltmeter route. Running the second output to a digital voltmeter and setting it so the volts match the AFR. I am going to run MSnS_Extra 029i code -

That little plastic box at the connector is the wideband controller. With LC-1 you get wideband controller integrated into the cable and no display unit. With LM-1 you get a display unit, in case you don't have a standalone computer and laptop that gives you a way to log/view you AFRs. At least that is the way I understand it. BTW, I will be purchasing an LC-1 next week to use with my newly built MSnS_Extra box. So if you want to see how it works before you buy one let me know. I am tentatively planning on installing the MSnS and LC-1 weekend after next, March 11th. -
Its going to be a time of mixed emotions when I end up next to a local z with the talon, of course I will let him win out of respect, not because the turbo z will have more power.... BTW, i love the semi rolling past right before the launch

So are you saying you want to start a fight over bad spelling? ha ha, I couldn't resist since this thread is mostly about clear communication. Gage: 1 : a token of defiance; specifically : a glove or cap cast on the ground to be taken up by an opponent as a pledge of combat

What board version is everyone running?

What megasquirt code is everyone running?

No problem, I can pick you up from the Calhan Airport, aka cow path

Ok, I need some input on my spark table for the 4G63 engine in the talon. I am trying to understand better why the L28et has idle timing set around 20 BTDC and then ramps up from there, but the 4G63 has idle timing at 5BTDC. I can see that the stroke and chamber design (swirl/air fuel mixture)) will affect timing, but is there anything wrong with setting the idle timing on the Talon at 16-18BTDC and ramping up from there? And why does the factory ECU keep timing so low at idle?

Likely excuse, hah A couple nice looking cars looks like fun

Finally got a dedicated PC installed in the garage to make megasquirt setup easier. It has a 25' DB9 cable to reach the cars. And it is fast, just look at the pic

I have used this circuit in two isntalls and it works, 1 controlling the taurus fan, the other controlling the buick 3.8l fan. If you have a version 2.2 board some of the signals like X2, X4, X11 etc may need to have a wire soldered on the board so that they connect to the DB36 cable. http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/outputs.htm Also read this entire page, at the bottom it has a another circuit with the X pins labeled to give you another idea. The bottom line is that with 2.2 board you will have to build a small transistor circuit to control the relay that controls the fan. MSnS does have hysteresis which allows you to have different on/off temp values so they fan doesn't jump on and off fast and kill the motor or relay. The $40 controllers also have hysteresis.

I could tell you made it home when you left my place because I could hear you all the way -
Yeah, he has two 60/63 turbos to put on there. He started having a new house built this winter. It is almost dried in now. That has really slowed down his projects. I'll let you know when the fun starts.

Actually all of them will be DIS. The talon of course is easy, its already set up for DIS with 2 coils, each running 2 cylinders. I bought an EDIS wheel that fits my supercharger crank pulley for the 454. We will use the same kind of EDIS wheel for the turbo sbc, and the LT1. The Hemi, who knows yet. Have to see what kind of factory trigger setup it uses. That will will definitely be the fun/involved project.

Mikes Projects: 1. Coming up next month Mike and I will be firing up a 2004 hemi for a street rod project that his dad owns. Looks like it will get fired up on the factory ECU and then fuel and spark will be converted over the MSnS. Should be interesting. He has been doing all the research on the engine, it does not have MDS. It does have 2 plugs per cylinder which would require an interesting coil configuration. The factory ECU also runs the auto tranny. 2. Mike also has turbos going on his sbc that is already squirted and he has an LT1 engine for swap into a 56 wagon. The LT1 will get MSnS hopefully in June. My Projects: 1. I will also be installing MSnS on the Talon in March. The two projects should help bring me back up to speed on the 029 code versions of MSnS. I ordered my kit from Jerry yesterday. I am going to build a harness adapter so the megasquirt plugs directly into the factory harness at the ECU plugs and does not use a realy board, should turn out real clean. 2. The 34 pontiac with 454 is still moving along. I am at the point of attaching the camaro subframe, then I can set the engine in and start hooking up the MSnS on it. So even though I am zcar-less right now there is no shortage of fun projects going on. I still want to experiment with water injection and knock detection on the Talon using MSnS. I'll keep you guys updated as each one comes online, should be a fun summer.

The Z31 ecu works good for a lot of people. What does it take to get it to 400hp, if its programmable which Bernard syas so IIRC, then that shouldn't be a problem. paging Bernard and other Z31 gurus I still think that the Z31 swap is the best/cheapest/easiest solution and then Megasquirt moves up from there as cheap/fully prgrammable/not so easy unless you have worked on a car with one.
