  1. ??? Really? Not to be the skeptic, but show me a website about these motorcycles rather than a book. I have had some rather extensive discussions about these valves, but have found no other references. I would appreciate any pictures, etc... -Bob
  2. All and Terry, I promised Terry,(blueovalz), a picture of my old gleason-torsen I have now sold. I got really busy flying and such, and this dropped in my priorities. Sorry Terry. I don't like to do that. Anyways, I figured more people than just you would want to see this. This shows you the gears of the torsen type diff. -Bob Hanvey Geocities won't allow outside picture linking...so here is the link: It is the last link on the page http://www.geocities.com/row4navy/picturepage.html
  3. i re-edited my post about the pics, check that again. and no, never thought you would do this, but I'm very happy to see it, and it is turning out awesome. -Bob
  4. Mike, The other guys are all on the right track for you. Remember a few things. First, your offset front vs rear,(meaning bodywork) is different and what works with respect to the front fenders might not work with respect to the rear fenders. Second, To put the flares on, you will be cutting away some of the fender under the flare. However, with where it is sitting now, that would be some serious cutting to clear and not hit on a bump. Last, it really could be any small thing with the strut that is not allowing the spring to do its job. The upper mount could be incorrect, or the spring might not be seated properly or a number of other issues. A good picture of the strut itself w/o the tire, esp. up towards the top of the strut will help the others troubleshoot. edit- i see you have the pictures now. what about a shot up into the hole where the upper strut mount is. granted you have about another 1.5 inches you can go up with the spring mount, it should be in the proper range and not be doing that. You might just have to go to a 9 or 10 inch spring. A call to Ross where you bought the springs/etc.. might help. Glad to see you are close to finishing. And you never did answer if you were supposed to be going to Boot camp soon? Did that not happen? -Bob
  5. Mike, Mike, Mike! You have been working on this car for quite some time now, and have YET to drive it..... Trust my words of wisdom here.... Drive it for at least 6 months. At least. I have gone through so many itterations on my Z and paint jail is not what you want right after you get it running. Drive it for a while. Drive it.. Drive... drive... No matter what the paint shop says, it won't be out in less than a few months. Unless you own the paint shop or are painting it yourself. Drive it. BTW, it is great to see you car finally coming together after all the decision making you went through. BTW, don't you head off for Boot Camp soon? -Bob
  6. And neither is the RB26 tranny. They are essentially the same internally. Not many transmissions are reliable over 500 hp..... Man, look at how much of that motor is in front of the strut towers in the 240sx....wow. -Bob
  7. Dan, That's fine. My Norfolk address will do nicely. I'll search around and find your black ones. -Bob
  8. I first read about this when it came out in Popular Hotrodding. I asked them about doing some testing for my senior design project. They declined. We had three superflow dyno's, with several V8's in various tune, all of which had the same bottom end. (It was a test for FI vs carbs among other things). In the end, after significant research for what I could find at the time, it was a very, very unproven project. The website is essentially the same as it was 4 years ago. I talked to them back in 99. It seems clear to me they still have some issues, otherwise the major manafacturers, or at least some aftermarket folks would be jumping on this. -Bob
  9. The extra gear is of little consequence. And what little that is gained from the R-34 engine,(about 10-15 hp over the R-33,(and exhaust cam and slightly different turbos)), can more than be made up with boost or other "improvements". Bottom line, there is no legitimate reason to use the 6 speed and the only reason to use the R-34 engine is because you have money burning a hole in your pocket for about 50% more than an R-33 depending on condtion. As for putting in the AWD, that has been discussed fairly well. Something to consider that you might have missed. With Brad D's, Stony's, Mine and others, the motor sits well back in the engine bay, with the strut towers aligning about the 2 cylinder mark. If you line up the front diff output shafts,(where the center of the wheels would need to be to make it work), with the strut towers, it is now lined up on cylinders 3-4. When you factor in a thick radiator, fans,(electric or mechanical), and the engine pulley's, the clearance is fairly small in our setup. Now move the engine about 6-8 inches forward. The radiator now needs to be in front of the radiator support and the intercooler in front of that! It has been done, but in a drag race only format. James T may be considering such a swap in the next year or two. -Bob
  10. Which is true? There is an important distinction that is not made. Both statements are correct The turbo pump by itself will only put out more volume at the same pressure. However, you are pumping that oil through a given "orifice" if you will, of the engine. Neither pump will put out more "max" pressure as it has a spring relief set for a certain pressure. What will happen is say at idle, the regular oil pump is putting out 5 gpm at 30 psi,(all numbers made up - these do not correlate to the actual pumps). The turbo pump will put out 7 gpm at 30 psi, but the engine resists that extra volume and the effective pressure might be 32 or 35. It is an academic discussion. Once the pumps reach a pressure that the spring relief is set to, both will only produce that much pressure. Bottom line, as I say on my page, if you are having pressure problems the solution is not a turbo oil pump. The turbo pump is a good solution if you are adding volume to the overall system by something such as a remote filter setup or an oil cooler, and that should be the primary reason for switching to a turbo pump. And Mikey, the cam is a very streetable setup. It had good idle and good power down low. Do remember that my motor was a 3.1L and my results will be slightly different than someone with a basicly stock 2.8L. -Bob
  11. Your not bursting any bubble, just clarifying. I missed that you were using the NA block,(Missed your second post). And while I am sure the NA block is extremely strong, I wouldn't put it in the same category as the TT block. I would be very surprised if the NA short block is identical,(meaning every part is the exact same and no parts are missing). My comments stand for the TT block and accessories. However, good on you for identifying the NA block as a possible substitute. However, it would help others if you outline what is modified to make it a turbo motor and to help it support that power as it may mislead people into how much money is required. I would gather a custom exhaust manifold of some kind, turbo, not to mention intercooler, upgraded radiator, etc... are all part of the "cheap" swap. More power to you for making it work, just don't expect it to be a cake walk with respect to how much you will eventually spend. -Bob
  12. DAW, I actually talked to someone who did do a sonic bore testing of the LD block. It starts out with a smaller bore than the 2.8, but the largest they could get the bore was in the 87-88mm range as they were sonic testing. If I remember correctly, they sometimes found individual cylinders they could get out to 89mm, which is equal to the 3.1 effort, but they never found a whole block they could do that with. In the end, they spent a lot of effort to find they couldn't exceed what they already had with the L28 block. -Bob
  13. $500 for a 2jz? Not a chance. More like $2-3000 or more. There were not that many TT supra's made and not that many engines are in the JY and they are a high demand item. The short block is just under $2000 from toyota. That doesn't include all the manifolds, etc.. If a 2jz blows in your car, you will likely be out a few thousand dollars. Please don't kid yourself on the cost of a project like this...... I have preached it many, many times. What applies to the RB26 swap also applies to the 2jz swap in many ways. The cost is just slightly less than the RB swap do to more availability of the 2jz in the US. -Bob
  14. Caps lock. Learn to use it please. Yes, to get AC to work in your car, you will need to have a system in the car already. You just adapt the RB compressor fittings to the Z system. I'm sure the Vintage air setup can be made to work. -Bob
  15. Not likely at all. If it is that cheap, I can almost promise you a few things. First it will be a R-32. Second, it will have higher mileage. Third, you won't likely have much guarantee if any. You get what you pay for. A low mileage R-33 motor will set you back at least 5k. A low mileage R-32,(if you can even find it, remember that is over 10 years old now), will be about 4-4.5k. And most of the importers will have a hard time verifying mileage unless you are dealing with a front clip. Food for thought. -Bob
  16. I am really interested in some pictures of how you actually mounted the subframe to the car as it directly relates to some work I am doing to my Z. Any and all pictures, either posted on yahoo or e-mailed directly to me are greatly apprecaited. Thanks! Bob Hanvey rehanvey -at- yahoo.com (obviously replace the -at- with @)
  17. There is not currently any Stock Skyline with a V8, much less a TTv8. All GT-R Skylines from R-32 through R-34 came with a RB26dett. The RB25det was available in the GS-t's and the awd GS-t's. The touring car championship in Japan currently has the Skylines running some form of V8 - but that is a rules issue and I'm not that familiar with them. So all STOCK Skyline GT-R's,(R-32, R-33, and R-34) had a RB-26dett. The STOCK Skyline GS-t's had a RB25det. Refer to Drax's post about what the disignations mean. Both are 6 cylinders, the RB26 is a twin turbo, the RB25 is a single turbo. Skylines never had a V8 from the factory for the models you are asking about. I am fairly sure they never had a V8 in the history of the Skylines - all 6 cylinders. -Bob
  18. I have thought about this a bunch and rejected it for several reasons. First, I know you are familar with the issues this site has had with the RB section and just how many "newbies" and trolls it attracts. The RB swap is glamorous and many people dream about it. As such, many, many folks ask many, many questions about it, often - well, that has been covered recently. If I created a "forum" or website,(there will be an extention of the Datsun Workshop when I am finished with my swap), I would moderate it like corner-carvers - which is not the best way to attract people to the swap. But that non-withstanding,(my personal style), it requires a large devotion of time to get something like that up and running. It took me about 3 some odd years of work to get the Datsun Workshop to the state it is now,(content wise) - and I still want to do some revisions! If I knew I was going to be in flight school for another year, I might consider it. But I just reported to my operational squadron and we go on deployment in January. In the end, hybridz offers just about everything we need for RB swaps right now. My plan for the Datsun workshop is to put together an extensive page as I did with the 3.1 stroker page that gives a step by step outline of what is required to make it work in your car. It will include the "stony" way, the Brad D way, and my way, and possibly some more. It will address the issues Stony, Brad and I continually bring up. Right now, there is just not a resource like that out there. I expect to have it at least started and in a draft from on the web by Jan of next year. As far as a RB forum, hybridz takes care of that and is more than adequate for now. Just my take. -Bob
  19. Jim, one visit is hardly enough time to form an opinion. A snap judgement? Absolutely. Dan still posts there if that is of any indication. In that post, Dan didn't follow some of the basic guidelines of corner-carvers, such as back up why you are saying something,(at the time you post it, not four or five posts later) provide proof, etc.. He eventually did, and they respected his opinion. Again, it is a different site, with different goals. Their approach is very sucessful and has good reasoning. It most certainly is not for everyone. However, there is much to learn from their approach and some of those approaches can be applied here and still fit the spirit of hybridz. It is just one of the more extreme examples and it works. That is part of the reason why it is used as a reference so much. Again, their approach as a whole is not the best option for here and it won't be applied for just that reason. How much time did you spend in the RB forum? I mean really spend reading the posts? There is a reason the sticky is only in that forum,(and not others) as it was one of the biggest problems in the site with respect to the issues brought up in this and other threads. As such, I and others felt the stronger approach was warranted. Over time, that will not be required as a sticky anymore and I will delete it or just let it fall off the front page. With the consolidation of the forums, I revised it to an extent, but not the title. Perhaps with the more broad forum a title revision is in order as we are talking about more than the RB issues,(and the alternate 6 cyl forum never really had much of a problem). However the original title, while not "friendly" was appropriate and warranted. It sometimes takes extreme measures to get peoples attention, esp with how much people are deadened to reading "don't do this". Hopefully we can move on. You are right, there are now too many stickies and announcments at the top of forums to make sense. A consolidation is absolutely in order. Will someone be banned for not doing what it says? Not likely. You have to push some buttons pretty hard for an admin to boot you. But it grabs peoples attention and makes them read it. It also significantly reduced the number of "offending" posts in that forum immediately - so it is working. With respect to spell check, I meant it to mean using cut and paste on your computer to check it with your own programs. It is more directed at those who have terrible spelling and grammar skills and take no effort to compose a coherent, readable post. A small spelling or grammar error is a minor detail that doesn't detract from the post and was not the point of that guideline. But every other word spelled incorrectly with 2nd grade grammar makes it hard to read. One last clarification. Why does anyone feel the compulsive need to answer every post? Hit the back button and go on! And do we really want to tell people to use a spell checker? Do we really want to come off with such an elitist attitude? I didn't mean an individual answering the same post again and again, I meant different people answering the same question from people over and over again, i.e. "How do I swap a RBXX in my my Z?". I'll answer it today, someone new posts it tomorrow because they are lazy and won't even look down the front page, and Stony answers it. Then on Saturday, another newbie asks the same exact thing and a third person answers it again, and again....and again.. That has happend on that particular question more than I care to recall. I thought that was clear, but now I see how it could not be. And absolutely I want people to at least think about whether they should use a spell checker. I addressed this in detail earlier in this post. If you sit there and write a post and think, "Are people going to understand me w/the way it is written now?". That pause alone can make a huge difference in many of the posts in question. I have changed the title in that sticky as well as put some slight revisions based on what you said. In the end I would rather see some toes stepped on and have this site stay the great site is has been than have everyone with a warm fuzzy and watch this site go down the toliet like it was. -Bob
  20. If you want specific questions about the rotary, go to some of the rotary forums - a much better place for your questions. Your questions show there is still an understanding gap of the rotaries. Hybridz isn't really a place to answer rotary specific questions. Now how to put that rotary in your Z? Yes, asked and answered here, and I believe two or three are doing it now,(I don't think any are doing a's). I did a search for rotaries and came up with a bunch of sh*t from the chevy v8Z section. I didn't search specifically for 13b because there are more b's out there and as far as I know, a couple a's Hmm, tells me to try different search terms, including 13b. Why would you not search for 13b when that is what you are looking for? Whatever garners the search results you want. As it has been said before, if you included this little gem of information in the first post, others might not have come down so hard about searching. More information earlier only helps you. RV cams? DOHC? stroker rotaries? boring it .30 over? alternative blinker fluids? Doodads and thingamajigs? watchamakalits? doohikkies? slapstick throttles? short throw clutches? megachargers (a supercharger that is driven by the exhaust gas and increases belt speed)? chikinbrakes? 2+3's? you know. that stuff. I seriously hope that is all tounge in cheek. Otherwise you need to do some serious research as most of that has nothing to do with a rotary. -Bob
  21. Thanks for the support, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. The moderators rightfully so don't always agree with the way I do business. I tend to be much more to the point and follow the corner-carvers philosophy of posting and moderating. It is a bit strong for the goals of hybridz. However that has changed as of late and I am happy with the change thus far. For the most part, I am very happy with the moderation here,(wasn't always true). It was a matter of time before they got sick of the common, vauge, repeat or unsubstatiated posts as I have been for years. I was just much more vocal about them, and that tends upset peoples sensibilites. In the end, our goals are the same, keeping this site the great resource it has been. -Bob
  22. Good lord! What is going on here. Just threating to ban some people for doing stupid things gets everyone panties up in a bunch. I'll address your points one at a time. I think mostly it is a misunderstanding of what hybridz is and what the other sites have to offer. Oh my god, if I say something contrary to the "admins" I'm banned! NOT. Its not about saying things contrary to those in charge, but not searching, not thinking, not spell checking AND then posting about how everyone is a moron for telling you to search and what a bunch of meanies they are for telling you the obvious. Jeez folks. Read the sticky in the 6 cylinder swaps forum by me. Read rule #5 - Have a thick skin! "1) We were all new to working on cars at one time or another, if a new person asks a question we should do our part to help them learn....." No disagreement there. 2) No more Datsun L6 forum?! This sucks. I plan on keeping my Z with a Datsun L6 engine but not the original nor anything that came off an assembly line anywhere either. Thus I am doing a swap, and customizing it to boot! Sounds good to me. Just because I'm not spending over $10k on an RB or several a vew grand on a V8 does not mean that I am not creating a hybrid Z. And absolutely NOONE here in charge has said such or would dispute that. It is just false impression, nothing more. 3) I understand having to rein in some of the "issues" or "problems" that you feel you are having but from a user's point of view I'm not sure what those are. Read through the announcement forums about moderators admins on a short fuse for more insight. No matter what you do you can not force someone to do a search before posting a question; all we can do is strongly suggest that they do so. And that my friend is where you are incorrect. This is a private site, financed by individuals. They set the rules and guidelines for the site. No, we cannot ensure individuals search before posting, but all of us here can enforce the guideline to do a search. Does that mean people will be banned at will? No, this is not Corner-carvers.com. If people still refuse to search and just want their questions answered, then I suspect a admin will ban or limit what they can do to keep the information that does flow here great. The sad reality is when someone doesn't do a search, people do answer, and at times it is incorrect. The goal is to limit misinformation, limit redundant posts, and retain the great knowledge base beacause people don't get tired of seeing the same question over and over again. If you want proof of why a strict enforcement policy works, lurk over at corner-carvers.com for a few months,(at a min.). The info exchanged there is fantastic, and the signal to noise ratio is very favorable. You prove my point with your last statement in this part: If they do not they should not be banned, but rather just by human nature people will stop answering because the people with the knowledge will get tired of it (an unfortunate situation but true none the less). An unfortunate situation that we don't want to occur. If the info is already there, why post it again? If there is more to discuss, then a new post, or a "pull up" of the older topic can accomplish that. It only serves to dilute the site if we allow everyone to post and not search. I can only say trust me on that one. 4) As for the alternative sites mentioned, frankly zcar.com is for dodo. Many of the poeple there are rude, condisending, and unhelpful (I am not the only person who feels this way). Hmmm, I wonder why? Could it be the same questions get asked time and time again? Could it be the knowldegeable base of people left because people don't do searches and ask the same basic questions again and again? And we already mentioned the forum software. Basicly the issues that the admins and moderators have issues with here. And they won't stand for it and I am 100% behind them. And zdriver.com just does not have the amount of traffic or knowledge that this site does, if you frequent it enough you will see that there may be one new post to the forum you are interested per day...if you're lucky; so that one is really not an option either. One that was not mentioned was 240z.org which is great, very helpful people and tons of information. However, they are mostly Z purists which is not a bad thing just that the members at hybridz sometimes have answers that they do not and vise versa. This is why I frequent both sites. Exactly. All of us are aware of the lack of traffic at zdriver,(and he isn't helping himself with the colors), and the good basic info a 240z.org which is why it doesn't need to be redundant here. I fail to see why it is a good thing to keep info here that can be answered at 240z.org or zcar.com? It is in the Z communitys best interest to promote those sites and help them grow as well. I don't think there should be a end all be all site where you can get everything answered from how to make my wipers work to how to stick a v8 in your Z. The interest levels are too wide apart and eventually will conflict. It has happend many times in the past on other Z forums. It is one of the primary reasons Hybridz was created. It is very sad to see that it appears as though you are trying to turn people away from this site when we should really be encouraging them to visit us here and learn more about Z cars. Incorrect statement. They are not trying to turn anyone away. They are just trying to keep the posts limited to what hybridz is all about, swaps, hybrids and custom work on Z's. They are more than welcome and encouraged to lurk and read and learn. They are not however, encouraged to post simple questions that are better answered at 240z.org about how to fix the parking brake on their 260z. Again, it was not then, and is not now, the intent of this site. Where did each of you gain all of the knowledge you have about cars, Z's, engines, etc? Surely you were not born with it! Well actually.... No, I learned by reading, searching, lurking and sometimes asking. But mostly reading and researching. I learned all about my 3.1 conversion by lots and lots of research. It allowed me to write the Datsun Workshop pages from what I learned. I posted very, very little to either the mailing lists or forums about how to do it. I didn't have to as the information was out there for the taking. The same is still true of many topics covered here at hybridz on a daily basis. Please be considerate of those who have the willingness and desire to learn and help them in their quest for knowledge and building thier Z the way they want it. Absolutely. And they should be considerate of those who post here and lurk and search more before posting. It is a two way street. Seeing as how my vocal and contravercial oppinion may get me banned I would like to say that I have enjoyed being a member here and hope to remain one. But if not then that's too bad that everything I said here gone unheard. Nope, your here to stay. And thanks for your concerns. THis is a good discussion and thanks for bringing it up. Remember, this is not a personal attack on you, but rather an attempt to straighten out the incorrect assumptions in your post. -Bob
  23. Just using the search term 12" brake, and limiting it to this forum, I returned 665 matches. The second return was a post a day before yours that listed at least two of the companies I listed. Now if you had provided that info in the first post, i.e. Hey, I found the following companies in a search, but they are not the ones I want....etc.. You would likely have gotten your answer, and still may. There are very, very few people out there offering 11 and 12 inch kits for Z's and 5 lug conversions. I listed the three I know of. The fact that this just came out,(i.e. you did a search, found other companies, but they weren't the ones), is exactly why everyone is on a short trigger to say "search", or the info is in here. Your first post was very, very vauge, not helping those who might have the info you want. Were not going to answer the same questions 50 times and I think you know why. More information would have greatly aided you in finding your answers. Good luck finding whoever it was you were looking for. -Bob
