Hey Greimann, I just noticed that you live in Huntington Beach. I work in Newport Beach. I wouldn't mind checking out your Z. I will be taking mine to work tomorrow. Maybe I can pass by on the way home from work. My e-mail is lt1240zmech@hotmail.com and my aim user name is lt1240zmech. E-mail me or chat online if you think you have a chance tomorrow. Thanks for the info, Marcos

Good source of info for those not running synthetic oil...what synthetic weight do you suggest Greimann. Marcos

Well the engine has about 30k miles on it after the previous owner built it up. The engine runs very cool at idle and cruising speeds, but I have only had it a few weeks. I did see it go higher yesterday when I was racing the engine. I hit 115mph and was hauling for a couple of minutes. The temp creeped up but not very close to halfway mark on the original guage. The car has a 3 core radiator and original fanclutch but it is missing the fan shrouds, imagine that. And it still runs cool. I want to install the electric Black Magic fan that I have. I guess I don't want to run 20W-50 oil unless I have to or really should. I was thinking 10W-30 or 10W-40, but which one should be better for this application. Thanks Daw, Marcos

Hi Jon, I have 78 5-speed with a 4.11 diff on my 71 240Z. It is fast and very streetable. It runs 70mph at a little over 3000rpm. Not too bad. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to swap the 5th gear from a 83 5-speed(non-turbo) and swap it into my 78 5-speed. That would give me better highway fuel efficiency and better top end speed. Don't get me wrong, my Z can still make it up to 130mph with this gearing. I took it up to 115mph this weekend and the previous owner had taken it up to 130mph before. I want to keep my lower gears and just change the fifth gear from the 0.864 it has to the 0.745. This would be perfect. If this is not possible does anyone know who makes aftermarket gears that I can drop in. Marcos

Well Daww, I forgot to mention the 20W-50 Severe Service Synthetic Racing Oil. I didn't mention it because I thought it might be too thick. Isn't it. Do you lose horsepower by running this weight, are there disadvantages. Why is this weight considered a race oil. Marcos

Oh, forgot to mention. Amsoil carries 5W-30, 10W-30 and 10W-40. They also carry a fuel efficient formula, 0W-30. I run that in my Accord but I think that would be too light for the 240Z. Any suggestions? Thanks, Marcos

Really good weekend. Worked on my 240Z and drove it Saturday and Sunday for more 150 miles. Man, it hauls "behind". The engine is tight and in really good condition. I am going to be running Amsoil synthetic oil. Which weight should I go with. Thanks, Marcos

My 240Z has a L28 block, E88 head, Moon cam and triple SK carbs. What oil weight should I use, 10W-30, 10W-40...and why. What are the advantages/disadvantages. What engine setup do you run and what oil do you use. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Marcos

Yeah Mike a 3.9 diff should be good. The 4.11 is very low and I will make decisions next year on whether to keep it or go with a 3.9. A 4.11 fits better on a drag only car. My car is going to be a street car. I will probably keep the 4.11 if I go with the 83 5-speed or if I can modify the 5th gear ratio on the 78 5-speed. Just to post it up Bang, Mike's Z shop is in Whittier. I have heard from the previous owner of my car and others that they do good work. Don't know first-hand though. Marcos

I bought a 240Z two weeks ago but haven't had time to post a message until now. I have been very busy. Well here it is... It is a red 1971 240Z, with a 280 block, E88 head, Moon cam, triple SK carbs, ITG intake filter, ported intake manifold, headers, modified exhaust, centerforce clutch, 78 5-speed tranny, and a 4.11 diff. The guy had bought the car from the original owner like 15 years ago. The original owner had painted it from the stock Zorange to red. It still has the same red paintjob. He has modified it over the years to the setup it has right now. The car has no noticable rust except for a rust hole in the corner between the bottom of the passenger door and rear wheel. I will fix that when I paint the car next year. Floors are solid, no rust. The interior is completely stock except for a seat kit that he installed and a half dash cover. The dash had some cracks in it. The car runs really good and it is quick. He said he went up against a new corvette not so long ago on the highway. He said that he was ahead of the vette all the way till about 130 then the vette pulled ahead (4.11, not good for high speed ). I will not do any major modifications until next year when I buy a house and have the room to tear the car down. I do have some questions about changes that can be done. Can the 5th gear of a 83ZX 5-speed be put into the car's tranny. So I can keep the gears it has but have a better top speed. Should I keep the ITG setup or should I make a cold air intake setup. I am worried about it picking up the hot air in the enginebay. Is colortune the best way for tuning carbs(I am new to carbs and want to learn) Oh yeah the car has a new three core radiator. The stock fan is unshrouded but it still runs really cool and doesn't even get hot. I will want to change to an electric fan. Pictures of my car can be seen at http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=729247&uid=519685 The last three images are modified images showing what the car would look like with different rims. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Marcos

15/16" master cylinder install question
Hybrid240z replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I just bought a 71 240z with the stock braking system(discs up front, drums in the back). I want to upgrade to a better setup in the front and disk brakes in the back. I have a 79 280ZX that I am going to get rid of. The 280ZX is generally in good condition and I changed the interior from the stock red interior to a black interior. The red interior was really damaged and the one I was putting in looks really good. Can I use any of the braking system on this car to put in my 240Z or should I just sell it and buy different brake components. I will part the out if I decide to use parts from it or will i get more money for it if I just sell it. I originally paid $900 bucks for the 280ZX and have invested like $300. The 240Z has a 280 block, E88 head and triple SK carbs, 5speed tranny and a 4.11 diff. It puts out about 210hp at the crank. I am going to keep this setup on the car so I need better stopping power. Thanks, Marcos -
Try copying the links and using them in a new window if you can't see the images. Clicking on them won't work. Sorry, this is the only other way I was able to make them work. Here is my plan. I would probably use the car as is until I have a house and the room to take it apart and work on it. Probably early next year. I wasn't really looking for a car that was in this type of condition(really good mechanically) so I would be able to get it for less. I was thinking that if the numbers matched on the engine and body that I would end up restoring this one and put some panasports on it. Then I would look for another one with a good body and put an LT1 in that one. That way I would have a mildly modified one and a Z-beast. I wouldn't want to mess with one that can be restored but I would want to keep it for myself if I can get it for a good deal. I was also wondering if it is about the same amount of work to put a V8 into a 240Z of any year or did the body type vary that much within the production years. What do you guys think because I pretty sure this guy will not budge much on the price if it is in really good condition. What do you think would be a fair price for this car if it has no rust, a good interior, and runs really good. I hope that everyone is able to view the three images perfectly because I have problems when I open up the post. Sometimes one image shows, other times two images show, and very rarely did all three images come up. Let me know if you are running into this problem and if you have any ideas why this is occuring. Thanks for the replies, Marcos

The car is a 1973 Datsun 240Z with a champagne repaint of the original color. It has 64K original miles, many new mech parts, no rust, no accidents, and an excellent driving car. The bumpers and other chrome look like they are clean with no rust. I am going to go take a look at the car tomorrow morning. He wants $3900 for it but I hope he is flexible on that number. Any suggestions on this one. Marcos

Is this 240Z worth buying?
Hybrid240z replied to Hybrid240z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
He lives way down there in San Diego area. His dad's shop is like 10 miles from the border. I don't know if he would sell it without the car. I can call him if you want. Let me know. E-mail me at lt1240zmech@hotmail.com Marcos -
Is this 240Z worth buying?
Hybrid240z replied to Hybrid240z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Thanks for the response. I thought the same too but I just wanted to make sure. I already called the guy and told him that I am not going to buy it. Marcos -
I was in San Diego this weekend visiting my sister-in-law. I was driving down the freeway when I saw a white 240Z a 1/4 mile ahead of me. I hauled ass and caught up to it and then i noticed that it had a for sale sign on it. I flagged him down and we pulled over. The car is a white 1972 240Z with the stock engine. The guy said that it was his son's car so he gave me his number. The dad owns a garage that specializes in nissans and datsuns. They have been in business for over 20 years. I called his son and we went to meet him and check out the car. Here is the car's story. It is a theft recovery that has been sitting in his shop for over 12 years. They took the engine and the interior. His father replaced the interior and installed a stock engine, that he rebuilt, when he acquired the car 12 years ago. The engine has less than 1000 miles on it. He recently gave the car to his son and he has had the whole interior done over seats and all. The dash has a few cracks, not too bad, but the interior looks perfect. His uncle did the work but glued the carpet to the floor so it wouldn't move. The car has a white repaint, not a good one, but looks ok. Never been in an accident, body is straight no dents, the rear bumper has rust on it, it is missing the front bumper, and the rims are the style that the A-Team van had(lol). There is no rust on the panels except for a couple of rust spots that are starting up. I wasn't able to raise the car because his dad wasn't at the shop and it was closed so we couldn't jack the car up. I took a look under and couldn't see any rust but haven't fully inspected it. He said they didn't see any rust under the seats when they put the carpet in but you never know. He also told me that he has a front air dam and a spoiler, still in the box, that he will throw in too. I think he bought them from Motorsports in Orange. He wanted $4500 for it but I talked him down to $3500. I told him that I would give him a call this week with a decision. Thanks for any suggestions, Marcos

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with parts that are cryogenically treated. Is it worth it to have some parts treated. Here is a link of a company that does this type of service. http://www.onecryo.com/onecryo/motorsp.htm I have found many companies online that do this kind of treatment. Marcos ( Is it getting cold around here? lol)

I plan on balancing the rotating assembly of the LT1 I plan to build up but I was wondering what the benefits are of blueprinting an engine? Is it worth it to do this on a street engine putting out about 450hp or is it a waste of money that should be invested on other hipo parts? Marcos -
Does anyone have pics of Darius' 240Z?

Anyone running Hooker super comp. headers/sbc
Hybrid240z replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I have heard that these full length hooker headers make more power than the block hugger headers that many people use. Can anyone verify this. Marcos -
New guy here. I'm planning on starting my project car by the end of this year. Still gathering info and images of different setups that I might use. I have decided to build a 71/72 240Z with a 95/96 Corvette LT1. I haven't decided what differential to use though. I have also seen the videos of Darius' car and it is awesome, to say the least. I was wondering if anyone can post up or post a link of images that show a closeup of his car. Thanks, Marcos

Anyone running Hooker super comp. headers/sbc
Hybrid240z replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I am going to start my project car by the end of this year and am also interested in using the same model hooker headers. I was wondering if anyone can post up images of those headers so we can see what they look like. Thanks, Marcos
