  1. FWIW - "Quicksilver" is a common name for the element Mercury. Mercury was the mythological messenger of the gods so obviously pretty fast. Should be interesting - 240 with an LS1 vs 280 with an LS6.
  2. Keep it rolling David. Interesting that we have two "silver" projects underway right now - Your "Silver Bullet" and Savage42's "Quicksilver".
  3. I have nearly 8,000 miles onmy conversion now - Spicer "Brute Force" U-joints in the rear with the 3.70 LSD. Car has been to Ennis once with the new U-joints and once with the old. The old ones had over 200,000 miles on them and held up OK for a few runs. They were showing signs of impending failure whent hey were replaced. The new ones appear to be doing fine but I don't drag race the car weekly. One trip to the drag race track to get the 12.9 and one trip so far to Texas Motor Speedway for twisty track work. I know guys that are running the R180 behind their V8 because they don't intend to pound it weekly at the drag strip. Just depends on what you are planning to do with the car.
  4. Look at the SS mufflers made by flowmaster and spintech. Spintech has sosme pretty interesting stuff. Also get on the http://www.drgas.com site and follow some of its links.
  5. John at Johns Cars has a Z31 roller at his shop for development of an LS1 swap kit. He also has a 280ZX roller. Maybe you guys should start bugging him about developing them?
  6. I had a friend who competes a Sunbeam tiger send me this same link yesterday. Amazing! What I am really interested in, though, is the adapter for the floor jack that allows it to pick up on the standard pick-up points on the Z. Yeah - yeah - I know - I could just tack weld that part from a Z jack to the floor jack. but for me, $20 would be worth it because then I could use either insert and use the jack for multiple functions.
  7. Man - can I identify wit you! I had a rat living inmy Z also. The difference was that I was driving it daily to work and the car was kept in the garage at night - never outside! Anyway, one day I saw him and was able to "Governor" him as the California guys might say.
  8. Yasin - WAY TO GO!! You know - who really cares what they say - the car has a two page write-up in a nationally distributed magazine. Heck - Mine's been in two magazines and the total space doesn't even add up to a full page. Do what my wife did - take the cover of the magazine and the article pages and have them matted and framed & hang it on your wall somewhere. Talk about bragging rights!!!
  9. I you are running at a constant speed and your fuel pressure drops then it is one of the following: 1) the fuel pump is screwing up and either not pumping or not getting suction properly (cavitating) Air bubles would be an indication of that. 2) The fuel pressure regulator is screwing up. It is a spring/diaphragm type? Maybe there is a hole in the diaphragm or the spring is screwed up. (air bubles could be an indication of air coming inthrough the pressure regulator) Then again - where are you measuring the fuel pressure? A guage generally only measures pressure downstream from its location so look at stuff AFTER the gauge to see if there is a problem there.
  10. I'm with Matt. I don't want to be around anything that would consider me as a light snack.
  11. Are you road racing the car? If you are just daily driving with occaisional 1/4 mile track use then I wouldn't worry too much. If you are really concerned you might want to look at the Arizona Z Car front A-arm asemblies that include a drastically revised T/C arm. Any experience from anyone here on those assemblies?
  12. Mike, The '98 Camaro LS1 in my Z Dyno'd 311 rwhp & 326 lb-ft of torque. Hotter day, K&N cone intake - behind the radiator - and shorty block huggers eventually into a single 2.5" exhaust. I think the key was that the ECU had been edited to 2001/2002 specs. Might want to consider that? Not allowing for wear - you should be able to bump yours up to around 325-330 hp & 340 lb-ft of torque.
  13. I really don't think the LS1 is that much more than the Ford 302 - especially given the difference in the technology levels. It also is lighter than the L28 or the 302, develops more HP and torque, and gets better fuel economy than the 302. Aftermarket parts are becoming plentiful and pricing is no worse to better than the 302. It's kind of a pay me now or pay me later thing.
  14. My engine was originally from a 4L60E equipped car so the whole clutch & flywheel assembly is new. John will get a chance to look at it sometime next week and will probably be able to identify the source. It didn't have it when the conversion was initially completed so something has changed.
  15. Thanks Mike. I guess the good news is that the problem existed BEFORE I went out to Texas Motor Speedway.
  16. The vibration occurrs around 2500 rpm on the engine -in first gear, in second gear, in third gear, etc. It does not occur at a particular automobile speed which would be driveline related or possibly wheel balance, alignment, etc. It does not occur under light load but under moderate load and higher. It is not present below 2,000 RPM and it does not appear to be present above about 4,000 rpm - in each gear - whatever speed I may be going down the road.
  17. Yeah - and according to the write-up in the magazine - PHriggin' PHast!!
  18. Interesting - shift pattern is the same as a T56. I think the wheels on the prototype were 19-20" so rotors are probably bigger than you think - but then again - at 2,850 lbs. they don't have to be huge to get the job done - especially for the average consumer. Again - that is why there are guys like us. Another thing - it's a Pontiac - wait a couple years for them to work all the bugs out of it and then buy one two years old for 1/3 off.
  19. I just got a copy in the mail today. They have not yet hit the newstand. Magazine is dominated by the old classic european sports cars but check out page 52 - The only Datsun Z car in the magazine - and it's a HYBRID!! Guess who's
  20. Couple things. I don't believe the 280ZX is nose heavy. I axled my '83 model and it was 1430 lbs on the nose and 1450 lbs. on the rear. The difference in weight between the engines is probably only 100 lbs. Also, the springs and struts on the 280Zx, if they are original, have probably lost some of their spring. Take a look at tyour car from the side. If it looks a little low in the rear then your springs have definitely sagged with age. I'd do the drive train conversion and then think about new springs. Once you know where it sits you can decide on the route you want to follow.
  21. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. Personally I think it has great potential. If I could buy a modified bucket with the 350Z headlight in it I probably would. Get better lights and aerodynamics all in one package. Much more practical than the bucket lenses the aftermarket folks sell.
